Predator odor recognition and antipredatory response in fish: does the prey know the predator diel rhythm?
2007
We studied in a laboratory experiment using stream tanks if two percid prey fish, the perch (Perca fluviatilis) and the ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus), can recognize and respond to increased predation risk using odors of two piscivores, the pike (Esox lucius) and the burbot (Lota lota). Burbot is night-active most of the year but pike hunts predominantly visually whenever there is enough light. Perch is a common day-active prey of pike and dark-active ruffe that of burbot. We predicted that besides recognizing the predator odors, the prey species would respond more strongly to odors of the predator which share the same activity pattern. Both perch and ruffe clearly responded to both predator…
Olesoxime improves cerebral mitochondrial dysfunction and enhances Aβ levels in preclinical models of Alzheimer's disease.
2019
Abstract Background Approved drugs for Alzheimer's disease (AD) only have a symptomatic effects and do not intervene causally in the course of the disease. Olesoxime (TRO19622) has been tested in AD disease models characterized by improved amyloid precursor protein processing (AβPP) and mitochondrial dysfunction. Methods Three months old Thy-1-AβPPSL (tg) and wild type mice (wt) received TRO19622 (100 mg/kg b.w.) in supplemented food pellets for 15 weeks (tg TRO19622). Mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels were determined in dissociated brain cells (DBC). Respiration was analyzed in mitochondria isolated from brain tissue. Citrate synthase (CS) activ…
Pharmacological activation of CB2 receptors counteracts the deleterious effect of ethanol on cell proliferation in the main neurogenic zones of the a…
2015
Chronic alcohol exposure reduces endocannabinoid activity and disrupts adult neurogenesis in rodents, which results in structural and functional alterations. Cannabinoid receptor agonists promote adult neural progenitor cell (NPC) proliferation. We evaluated the protective effects of the selective CB1 receptor agonist ACEA, the selective CB2 receptor agonist JWH133 and the fatty-acid amide-hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor URB597, which enhances endocannabinoid receptor activity, on NPC proliferation in rats with forced consumption of ethanol (10%) or sucrose liquid diets for 2 weeks. We performed immunohistochemical and stereological analyses of cells expressing the mitotic phosphorylation of his…
ChemInform Abstract: First Reactions of 2,2′-Bisindolyls with Electrophilic Azo Compounds and Diethyl Mesoxalate.
2010
Conformations and some electronic properties of the 2,2′-bisindolyls 6 were calculated for the prediction of probable Diels-Alder reactivity, in analogy to previous work on 2-vinylindoles. First reactions with dienophiles revealed that compounds 6 did not participate in [4 + 2]cycloadditions but rather underwent simple electrophilic substitutions at the enamine function with, above all, some heterodienophiles. Aldosterone synthase activity in the Y-1 adrenal cell line.
1995
The Y-1 adrenal cell line was shown to produce 20 alpha-dihydroaldosterone from deoxycorticosterone. This compound was identified by GC-MS by comparison with the previously synthesized reference compound. Two other 18-hydroxylated metabolites were identified as 11 beta,18-dihydroxy-20 alpha-dihydroprogesterone from endogenous cholesterol and 18-hydroxy-20 alpha-dihydro-11-dehydrocorticosterone from DOC. The conditions necessary for the synthesis of these compounds are culturing in 20% serum-supplemented medium and repeated incubations with the substrate. The production of 11 beta-hydroxylated steroids and that of 18-oxygenated steroids is stimulated differently by ACTH and angiotensin II su…
Pharmacological blockade of the fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) alters neural proliferation, apoptosis and gliosis in the rat hippocampus, hypothal…
2015
Endocannabinoids participate in the control of neurogenesis, neural cell death and gliosis. The pharmacological effect of the fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor URB597, which limits the endocannabinoid degradation, was investigated in the present study. Cell proliferation (phospho-H3(+) or BrdU(+) cells) of the main adult neurogenic zones as well as apoptosis (cleaved caspase-3(+)), astroglia (GFAP(+)), and microglia (Iba1(+) cells) were analyzed in the hippocampus, hypothalamus and striatum of rats intraperitoneally treated with URB597 (0.3 mg/kg/day) at one dose/4-days resting or 5 doses (1 dose/day). Repeated URB597 treatment increased the plasma levels of the N-acylethanolamine…
An automatic multidimensional chromatography system for purification of human uterine progesterone receptor and induction of polyclonal antibodies.
1986
Abstract This paper reports on the synthesis of Org2058-bonded microparticulate silicas and their use in affinity chromatography as the first step for the purification of human progesterone receptor. The development of microprocessor-controlled instruments allows all the various steps to be performed automatically. The various steps used for the purification of human progesterone receptor were carried out with the FPLC system: (1) affinity chromatography, (2) desalting of eluate on Sephadex G-25, (3) anion-exchange chromatography using a Mono Q column. With this procedure the receptor was purified approx. 10,000-fold within 24 h. The yield of receptor was generally 85–95%. Investigations wi…
Synthesis and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis of reduced compounds derived from 6 alpha- and 6 beta-hydroxy-11-deoxycorticosterone.
1989
Abstract A series of thirty two 6-hydroxylated steroids were synthesized by selective reduction of the 4–5 double bond, the 3-oxo group, and/or the 20-oxo group of 6α- and 6β-hydroxyDOC. The different reactions leading to the production of specific isomers are discussed. The gas chromatographic and spectrometric characteristics of the methoxime-trimethylsilyl (MO-TMS) or trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatives of the isomers obtained are given. The gas chromatographic separation of the syn- and anti -isomers of the methoxime in position 3 was found to be characteristic of the configuration of the hydroxyl in position 6. The difference between methylene unit values of syn- and anti- isomers is much…

A field methodology to study effects of UV radiation on fish larvae.
2003
There is a considerable lack of in situ specific information about the effects of UV-B radiation on limnic animals studied in the field. We exposed larval pike (Esox lucius L.) in two types of cuvettes (glass and quartz) placed at different depths (5 or 15 cm) to natural solar UV or to artificially enhanced UV-B (lamps on 3 h per day), simulating the scenarios for coming decades. Dose realism and comparability with earlier laboratory experiments was the main purpose, and therefore UV-B irradiances to the surface as well as underwater irradiances were directly measured. Result showed that UV-B dose rates in natural waters are low even though DOC concentration was low (4.8 mg/l) in our study …
