How Do Students Value the Importance of Twenty-first Century Skills?

2014

Frameworks of twenty-first century skills have attained a central role in school development and curriculum changes all over the world. There is a common understanding of the need for meta-skills such as problem solving, reasoning, collaboration, and self-regulation. This article presents results from a Finnish study, in which 718 school pupils aged 11 to 15 years were asked to anticipate the skills they would need in the future. Accordingly, they were asked to value and rank the twenty-first century skills listed in existing frameworks and pick out those they regarded as the most important they had learned. Social skills and collaboration were ranked highest, both in the listed frameworks …

Explaining Extreme Mobile Experiences

2013

Extreme service or product experiences have a major influence on perceptions and behavior. Therefore, numerous studies have collected such single positive and negative experiences to understand which factors affect (dis)satisfaction, value, and quality. However, most of these studies lack the process approach needed for understanding why and how these experiences take place and proceed, whereas the context of mobile applications has also remained highly unexplored. This study aims to fill the gap by presenting the mobile experience process model with empirical evidence of extreme experiences from 606 actual mobile application users. With the help of the model and the detailed descriptions o…

The value of academics’ research-related online writing

2020

Research productivity indicators tend to ignore online and social media writing of academics, nevertheless, many academics for instance tweet and blog. It thus seems that there is additional value for writing in these genres. This study sets out to explore what roles writing in these hybrid online genres plays in relation to academics’ research activities. Drawing on in-depth research interviews with 29 academics with various L1s from three different disciplines, the study focuses on the participants’ perceptions of tweeting and blogging, and how they value writing in these genres in relation to core research-writing genres in their fields. Changes in Young Europeans’ Values During the Global Financial Crisis

2019

We investigate the impact of the global financial crisis (GFC) on the personal values of youth and young adults (age 16–35 years) from 16 European countries. Using time series cross-sectional data from seven waves (2002–2014) of the European Social Survey, we examined (1) whether the GFC led to value shifts between cohorts of young people and (2) whether welfare state provision moderate the expected value shifts. Multilevel analyses showed that, following the GFC, the importance of security, tradition, benevolence, and, to a lesser extent, conformity values increased. In contrast, hedonism, self-direction, and stimulation values decreased. In line with our moderation hypothesis, power, and…

Philosophy and science: the axes of evil in disability studies?

2007

In this review, I concentrate on analysing the response Tom Shakespeare’s Disability rights and wrongs has awoken in the disability studies community. I argue that the complicated relationship between politics and science is the underlying cause for many controversies in disability studies. The research field should regain its autonomy and scrutinise properly its ontological premises. The field of disability studies in the UK is in turmoil. During the past 10 years or so, there have been several debates that have revolved around the social model of disability. The latest source of a heated debate is Tom Shakespeare’s Disability rights and wrongs . Many of us working outside the UK have foll…

Ethics of Beliefs

2017

This paper deals with the concept of positive learning (PL). The main goal is to provide a working definition of PL on which further refinements and extensions can be based. First, I formulate a list of desiderata for a definition of PL: I argue that a working definition of PL should (i) make the involved epistemic norms explicit, (ii) be flexible, and (iii) be empirically tractable. After that, I argue that a working definition of PL should focus on three basic epistemic norms (which I call Evidentialism, Degrees of Plausibility, and Non-Arbitrary Updates). Drawing on work on the ethics of belief and Bayesian inference, I highlight theoretical and empirical challenges that already follow f…

Psychometric properties on a romantic love myths scale: The case of the myths, fallacies and erroneous beliefs about the ideal of romantic love scale

2021

Understanding the construct of romantic love is an important task in societies all around the world. However, instruments designed to assess this construct are scarce and most of them were developed more than a decade ago. De la Peña, Ramos, Luzón, and Recio (2011) proposed the Myths, Fallacies and Erroneous Beliefs about the Ideal of Romantic Love Scale. In this current study we provide the psychometric properties of this scale in a representative sample of adolescents. The analytic strategy included both Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis. We achieved a best-factor structure using a unidimensional model of romantic beliefs which also had an adequate estimated rel…

Kremlin ja kukkaron ehdoilla : journalistiopiskelijoiden käsityksiä journalismin roolista ja etiikasta Venäjällä vuonna 2012

2013

Tämä pro gradu -työ käsittelee journalismia Venäjällä. Tutkielmassa keskitytään erityisesti journalistin yhteiskunnallisen roolin ja journalismietiikan tarkasteluun. Aineistona ovat moskovalaisten journalistiopiskelijoiden teemahaastattelut, jotka on kerätty helmikuussa 2012 Moskovan valtionyliopiston (MGU) journalismin tiedekunnassa. Tutkielman tavoitteena on ollut selvittää, miten journalistiopiskelijat suhtautuvat ammattiinsa Venäjällä: miten tiukka mediakontrolli vaikuttaa heidän ajatteluunsa lehdistönvapaudesta, ja kuinka journalistietiikkaan suhtaudutaan maassa, johon ei ole luotu journalistien itsesääntelyjärjestelmää. Tutkielman tavoitteena on tarjota katsaus median näkökulmasta Ven…
