La funzione tecnica e il mestiere dell'artigiano nella Grecia antica tra merito e responsabilità. Una rassegna critica
2017
This paper is a critical essay on the social value of craftsmen in ancient Greece as well of the merit and ethic responsibility connected to the social use of their skills and forms of knowledge, the so-called technai. On one hand a low grade of social consideration was attributed to craftsmen, especially among the upper classes in the Greek cities; on the other hand, craft and technical skills were an essential medium for all the material products and commodities to be supplied for the citizens. The origins of this ambiguous relationship between society and technical skills seem to lie in the particular social and political conditions of Greek craftsmen, mostly foreign people at the dispos…

Social mirrors. Tove Jansson’sInvisibleChildand the importance of being seen
2016
ABSTRACTThis article examines the experience of being seen and analyzes its central role in the formation of a coherent sense of self. Tove Jansson’s short story from 1962, ‘The Invisible Child’, serves as the red thread of the article, and the story is analyzed in the light of Donald Winnicott’s work on social mirroring. The analysis is enriched by the psychoanalytic insights of Veikko Tahka and Heinz Kohut, and complemented by Axel Honneth’s philosophical elaborations as well as by recent developmental findings as presented by Vasudevi Reddy. The article is divided into an introduction and three sections. After summarizing Jansson’s story in the introduction, the first section elaborates …

Ever since it emerged on a widespread basis in the 1990s, electronic performance monitoring of employees has received significant scrutiny in the literature. Call centers have been the focus of many of these studies. This particular study addresses the issue of electronic performance monitoring in call centers from an ethical perspective. The following ethical dilemma is offered: "Is it ethical for a call center manager to evaluate the performance of a call center employee using electronic performance monitoring data gathered on the employee?" Using utilitarian, Kantian, virtue, and covenantal ethical theories, the study proposes an ethical decision model and subsequently applies the model …
The framing of moral foundations alters perceptions of ethical business practices
2015
Pressure to be both ethical and profitable can create conflicts. Morality is multi-faceted, and ethical perceptions of a company that chooses shareholder profits over avoiding community harm may depend on one’s endorsement of different moral foundations. Participants responded to different ethical dilemmas where companies chose shareholder profit over avoiding community harm. Across all studies, moral foundations influenced ethical perceptions. Study 1 found that endorsement of the moral foundation of harm avoidance was associated with decreased ethical perceptions of a company choosing shareholder profits over avoiding community harm, whereas loyalty endorsement was associated with the opp…
