This tendency was baptized in different forms such as dark tourism, thana-tourism or mourning tourism to name only a few. Attention Check Items and Instructions in Online Surveys: Boon or Bane for Data Quality?

In this paper, we examine rates of careless responding and reactions to detection methods (i.e., attention check items and instructions) in an experimental setting based on two different samples. First, we use a quota sample (with monetary incentive), a central data source for internet-based surveys in sociological and political research. Second, we include a voluntary opt-in panel (without monetary incentive) well suited for conducting survey experiments (e.g., factorial surveys). The introduction of DNA analysis to forensic science brought with it a number of choices for analysis, not all of which were compatible. As laboratories throughout Europe were eager to use the new technology different systems became routine in different laboratories and consequently, there was no basis for the exchange of results. A period of co-operation then started in which a nucleus of forensic scientists agreed on an uniform system. This study explores personal (self-esteem, perceived stress, and depressive mood) and situational (undesirable life events) variables as determinants of relationship-specific perceptions of social support. Structural equation analyses from two-wave panel data (N = 583) of adult participants from a community-based urban sample revealed that, after controlling for initial levels of perceived social support, psychological characteristics (high levels of stress and depression, and low levels of self-esteem) and situational determinants (number of undesirable life events) were both negatively related to perceived social support from specific significant relationships over time. In this paper I consider the case of people who find The Mere Addition Principle counterintuitive. Their particular intuitions may be understood as instances of The Principle of Intrinsic Disvalue of Existence (PIDA). Following this idea Contractualism seems to be an appropriate method to solve population ethics dilemmas. Still, I show that their rejection of The Mere Addition Principle – if understood as an instance of PIDA – is not enough to avoid these dilemmas and to reach a stable equilibrium among their intuitions.
