In this paper I try to revise Sen’s thesis about the «transcendental» nature of Rawls’ theory of justice. According to Sen transcendental theories of justice are unnecessary. What we aim at is to justify a series of comparative judgements about two or more states of affairs.We do not strive, unlike Rawls, to form a complete system of moral principles that backs an «ideal just society». I try to show that Sen’s «comparative» account is weak. First of all, Sen does not offer a fair interpretation of Rawls’ theory. Gli argomenti vengono suddivisi in due stili rispondenti a regole diverse. Segue un'analisi sul piano metodologico dei due stili morali, presentati come due modi di intendere la ricerca rawlsiana di un equilibrio riflessivo. The relationship between metaphysics and ethics in classical Greek philosophy is understood not as a relationship of unilateral foundation but of co-foundation: not only in Aristotle, but also in Plato, insofar as it is considered problematic to make a rigid distinction between the young, aporetic Plato and the dogmatic, mature Plato. Through Heidegger’s reflection on care as a re-proposal of this co- founding relationship of metaphysics and ethics present in Aristotle, the paper ar- gues that the relationship between ethics and metaphysics in the ancient Greeks can indicate a way forward in our fragile, restless and divided contemporary world.

This paper analyses Dilthey’s unpublished lecture from 1890. In the anthropological and ethical reflections, a pre-predicative form of expression is pointed out as a dynamic fundament of inner life. In the second part of the lecture, expression as this inner dynamic of life is further connected with Dilthey’s “forming ethics”, i.e. with an approach that takes the inner interplay of high- and low-level processes of consciousness as the essential basis of an integrated and solidary social life. In the context of such a social ethics, expression plays a fundamental role thus gaining a broader meaning for a philosophy of life also concerned with ethical issues.
