'A Ghastly and Blasphemous Nightmare ': Environmental Ethics in Dickens's Journalism
2018
In the article ironically entitled A Monument of French Folly, published in Household Words, 8th of March, 1851, Charles Dickens targeted a number of civic reforms in municipal abattoirs located within the city walls of London as well as the English arrogant reluctance to adopt the hygienic measures practiced in French slaughterhouses. Dickens’s article was part of the foregoing struggle to relocate the Smithfield livestock market and surrounding slaughterhouses from the City of London in the city outskirts, so as to prevent ventilation problems and the risk of miasmic infection. The aim of this paper is to examine Dickens’s article in the light of contemporary environmental concerns. I wil…

2019
The purpose of the following pages is to better understand how social identities are constructed and how these constructions influence citizenship. For this, I will analyze a type of hero that emerged in England throughout the nineteenth century: the one related to travel and exploration. He is a hero who assumes a thousand-year-old tradition and develops it in a certain direction. Its purpose is to reinforce an idea of the world that serves the interests of the social groups that create or mold that heroic figure and that, through it, aspire to that image of the world becomes dominant, permeating all social sectors. After pointing out some of the most outstanding travel modalities of the n…
A Modern-Day Diary : Notes for Future Humans
2021
Abstract Time and being can be seen as a space. A modern-day diary is a way of exploring that space or state of being. Outlining and shaping it requires word, image and imagination. The question is framed cultural-philosophically, and the mode of writing is poetic essayism. Otherwise, the creative untangling and differentiation of the poetics of lived space is not possible. After all, the goal is to combine science and art and weave them into the same reflective fabric. The essential aspects include thoughts about the fullness and filling of something, about its fulfilment. Then the present moment is not seen as marking a boundary in just one direction: it is not just an endpoint of the pas…
Reviewing education concerns
2012
Abstract Education issues often recur to the usage of mathematical and economic theories to expand the current understanding about student's motivation. At some extent, their goals are valuable and for that merits recognition, but their findings should be re-visited. In the present review, we explore the connection of limitation of awards in education issues. From our end, it is important to remind that efficiency seems not necessarily determined by self-motivation. Furthermore, based on the few knowledge respecting to the dynamic of groups these types of award programs have, reinforcements are not being applied in a correct way in the field.
