The Anti-Samaritan Attitude as Reflected in Rabbinic Midrashim

2021

Samaritans, as a group within the ranges of ancient ‘Judaisms’, are often mentioned in Talmud and Midrash. As comparable social–religious entities, they are regarded ambivalently by the rabbis. First, they were viewed as Jews, but from the end of the Tannaitic times, and especially after the Bar Kokhba revolt, they were perceived as non-Jews, not reliable about different fields of Halakhic concern. Rabbinic writings reflect on this change in attitude and describe a long ongoing conflict and a growing anti-Samaritan attitude. This article analyzes several dialogues between rabbis and Samaritans transmitted in the Midrash on the book of Genesis, Bereshit Rabbah. In four larger sections, the f…

The Love of Money, Satisfaction, and the Protestant Work Ethic: Money Profiles Among Univesity Professors in the U.S.A. and Spain

2004

This study tests the hypothesis that university professors (lecturers) (in the U.S. and Spain) with different money profiles (based on Factors Success, Budget, Motivator, Equity, and Evil of the Love of Money Scale) will differ in work-related attitudes and satisfaction. Results suggested that Achieving Money Worshipers (with high scores on Factors Success, Motivator, Equity, and Budget) had high income, Work Ethic, and high satisfaction with pay level, pay administration, and internal equity comparison but low satisfaction with external equity comparison. Careless Money Admirers (high Success but low Budget) had low intrinsic job satisfaction and low satisfaction with pay level and life. A…

3He MRI in healthy volunteers: preliminary correlation with smoking history and lung volumes

2000

MRI with hyperpolarized helium-3 (3He) provides high-resolution imaging of ventilated airspaces. The first aim of this 3He-study was to compare observations of localized signal defects in healthy smokers and non-smokers. A second aim was to describe relationships between parameters of lung function, volume of inspired 3He and signal-to-noise ratio. With Ethics Committee approval and informed consent, 12 healthy volunteers (seven smokers and five non-smokers) were studied. Imaging was performed in a 1.5 T scanner using a two-dimensional FLASH sequence at 30V transmitter amplitude (TR/TE/α = 11 ms/4.2 ms/<10°). Known amounts of 3He were inhaled from a microprocessor-controlled delivery device…

Is the Tax Burden a Generating Factor of Fiscal Evasion in South-East Europe?

2020

Tax evasion is a pernicious phenomenon, very widespread in the world, which is closely linked to the system of taxes and fees. This is considered to be a response to the excessive fiscal pressure exerted on taxpayers. Bypassing the law is also closely related to the phenomenon of corruption and its removal is a difficult target, under the existing conditions. The main purpose of this paper is to study the influence of corruption and fiscal pressure on the phenomenon of tax evasion, materialized by the shadow economy indicator. The analysis is carried out over a period of 18 years, namely 1999-2016, for six countries of South-Eastern Europe, member states of the European Union, divided into …

The Norwegian healthy body image programme: study protocol for a randomized controlled school-based intervention to promote positive body image and p…

2018

Body dissatisfaction and disordered eating raise the risk for eating disorders. In the prevention of eating disorders, many programmes have proved partly successful in using cognitive techniques to combat such risk factors. However, specific strategies to actively promote a positive body image are rarely used. The present paper outlines a protocol for a programme integrating the promotion of a positive body image and the prevention of disordered eating. Using a cluster randomized controlled mixed methods design, 30 high schools and 2481 12th grade students were allocated to the Healthy Body Image programme or to a control condition. The intervention comprised three workshops, each of 90 min…

The impact of diet during adolescence on the neonatal health of offspring: evidence on the importance of preconception diet. The HUNT study

2020

Background: Emerging evidence suggests that parents' nutritional status before and at the time of conception influences the lifelong physical and mental health of their child. Yet little is known about the relationship between diet in adolescence and the health of the next generation at birth. This study examined data from Norwegian cohorts to assess the relationship between dietary patterns in adolescence and neonatal outcomes. Methods: Data from adolescents who participated in the Nord-TrA¸ndelag Health Study (Young-HUNT) were merged with birth data for their offspring through the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN). Young-HUNT1 collected data from 8980 adolescents between 1995 and 19…

Not ageing in place: Negotiating meanings of residency in age-related housing

2015

Abstract Purpose This article explores the experience of residing in age-related housing. The focus is on the negotiations around the multiple meanings assigned to place of residency among older people — in a situation where the official policy objectives of growing old in one's own home are not achieved. Design and methods Narrative analysis is employed to study the experiences of older people aged 75 or older living in special types of housing due to actual or anticipated difficulties associated with age. The interviews are part of a larger body of data gathered in MOVAGE Moving in Old Age: Transitions in Housing and Care research project. Findings The storyworld was structured by the rom…

Optimism and pessimism are related to different components of the stress response in healthy older people.

2015

Some personality traits have key importance for health because they can affect the maintenance and evolution of different disorders with a high prevalence in older people, including stress pathologies and diseases. In this study we investigated how two relevant personality traits, optimism and pessimism, affect the psychophysiological response of 72 healthy participants (55 to 76 years old) exposed to either a psychosocial stress task (Trier Social Stress Test, TSST) or a control task; salivary cortisol, heart rate (HR) and situational appraisal were measured. Our results showed that optimism was related to faster cortisol recovery after exposure to stress. Pessimism was not related to the …

Concerning mistreatment of older people: clinical and ethical thoughts based on a study of known cases.

2006

International audience; Following a report by the Health Ministry recommending a greater implication of general practitioners (GP) in the diagnosis and care of mistreated older people, we wanted to evaluate what was actually their role in this matter. A study was made of files of mistreated older persons referred to the social services in a Parisian suburb. For each file, we noted who raised the first suspicions of mistreatment, who diagnosed it, what happened next, and what precisely the GP's role was. Out of 600 files, we found 12 cases, concerning 14 persons (two couples). Although all the patients had health problems requiring frequent consultations with their GP, none of these situatio…
