The aim of these studies was to characterize the (H-2b X H-2k)F1-unique restriction element(s) responsible for presentation of bovine insulin (BI) to a long-term cultured T-cell line (BK-BI-1.2). (B10.BR X bm12)F1 spleen cells, which express a normal Ab alpha Ak beta molecule but a mutated Ak alpha Abm12 beta product on their cell surface, were perfectly able to act as BI-presenting cells. Antibody inhibition experiments with antibodies directed at I-Ak products revealed that monoclonal antibody 10-2.16, which reacts with the Ak beta polypeptide chain, abrogated BI-directed T-cell proliferation, whereas antibody H116-32.R5 with specificity for the Ak alpha chain was not inhibitory. We feel that our results and our interpretation of the results are supported by our data analyses and do add to the current understanding of the relationship between 2D:4D and personality. We feel confident we can address many, if not all, of Voracek's criticisms. In order to elucidate the role of keratinocytes (KCs) in the induction of contact sensitivity, we applied various contact sensitizers [2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB), urushiol, 3-n-pentadecylcatechol (PDC), 4-ethoxymethylene-2-phenyloxazol-5-one (oxazolone)] and tolerizing compounds [2,4-dinitrothiocyanobenzene (DNTB), 5-methyl-3-n-pentadecyl-catechol (5-Me-PDC)] onto the earskin of non-sensitized Balb/c mice. Alpha-1-antitrypsin-induced inhibition of complement-dependent phagocytosis.

Abstract In a previous investigation, inhibition of complement-dependent rosette formation by alpha1-antitrypsin (α1-AT) was observed, and it was demonstrated that α1-AT interacts through its carbohydrate portion with C3 and its fragments. In the present study, the effect of α1-AT on the complement-receptor-mediated phagocytosis by human peripheral blood monocytes was examined. Purified α1-AT inhibited in a dose-dependent manner phagocytosis of C3-carrying yeast particles. Inhibition was selective, concerned only C3-receptor-mediated phagocytosis, neither Fc-receptor-mediated phagocytosis nor uptake of untreated yeast particles was blocked by α1-AT. A Dichoptic Edge Effect Resulting from Binocular Contour Dominance

If one eye sees a bright field on a dark surround while a homogeneous background is presented to the other eye, then a distinct dark zone appears at the outer borders of the field.If the surround is coloured, then the zone is of corresponding hue. The effect disappears if the edge of the field can be fused with a bar of appropriate contrast. The influence of parameters such as pattern contrast and size were studied quantitatively. A model is proposed relating the effect to receptive-field organisation and the fusion process.

Any occasional changes in the acoustic environment are of potential importance for survival. In humans, the preattentive detection of such changes generates the mismatch negativity (MMN) component of event-related brain potentials. MMN is elicited to rare changes (‘deviants’) in a series of otherwise regularly repeating stimuli (‘standards’). Deviant stimuli are detected on the basis of a neural comparison process between the input from the current stimulus and the sensory memory trace of the standard stimuli. Hormonal and emotional responses to competition using a dyadic approach: Basal testosterone predicts emotional state after a defeat.

The present study analyzes the testosterone (T), cortisol (C) and emotional response in competitive interactions between dyads, as well as the relationship between basal T and the emotional response. Seventy-two men and women (36 dyads) participated in same-sex dyads in a face-to-face laboratory competition, and thirty-two men and women (16 dyads) carried out the same task in a non-competitive condition. Previous investigations have found specific communication patterns in couples dealing with depression, specifically when depression concurs with conjugal conflicts. The presence of these patterns can reflect couples' difficulties in engaging in collaborative communication during their sessions, posing a real challenge for therapists.
