Electronic Structure Modulation in an Exceptionally Stable Non-Heme Nitrosyl Iron(II) Spin-Crossover Complex

2016

The highly stable nitrosyl iron(II) mononuclear complex [Fe(bztpen)(NO)](PF6)(2) (bztpen=N-benzyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine) displays an S=1/2 S=3/2 spin crossover (SCO) behavior (T-1/2=370 K, Delta H= 12.48 kJmol(-1), Delta S=33 JK(-1) mol(-1)) stemming from strong magnetic coupling between the NO radical (S=1/2) and thermally interconverted (S=0 S=2) ferrous spin states. The crystal structure of this robust complex has been investigated in the temperature range 120-420 K affording a detailed picture of how the electronic distribution of the t(2g)-e(g) orbitals modulates the structure of the {FeNO}(7) bond, providing valuable magneto-structural and spectroscopic correlat…

Prenatal exposure to organochlorine compounds and lung function during childhood

2019

Introduction: Prenatal exposure to organochlorine compounds (OCs) can increase the risk of reported respiratory symptoms in children. It remains unclear whether these compounds can also impact on lung function. We assessed the association between prenatal exposure to OCs and lung function during childhood. Methods: We included 1308 mother-child pairs enrolled in a prospective cohort study. Prenatal concentrations of p,p′-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane [p,p′-DDT], p,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene [p,p′-DDE], hexachlorobenzene [HCB], and seven polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs] were measured in cord blood. Spirometry was performed in the offspring at ages 4 (n = 636) and 7 years (n = 1192…

Effect of temperature on the release of carvacrol and cinnamaldehyde incorporated into polymeric systems to control growth and biofilms ofEscherichia…

2015

This study assessed the effect of temperature on the release of essential oil components incorporated by melt compounding into polymeric films. Specifically, polyethylene-co-vinylacetate (EVA) films containing carvacrol (CAR) and cinnamaldehyde (ALD), alone and in combination, were prepared and their surface and mechanical properties and antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were evaluated. The addition of ALD and CAR did not provoke variation in the surface morphology of EVA and allowed their delivery. At 37°C, films containing CAR, ALD or their combination (25+75%) were found to have the strongest bactericidal effect, whereas at lower t…

A POLYCARBOXYLIC/AMINO FUNCTIONALIZED HYALURONIC ACID DERIVATIVE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF pH SENSIBLE HYDROGELS IN THE PREVENTION OF BACTERIAL ADHESION …

2014

A graft copolymer derivative of hyaluronic acid bearing pendant amino and short polymethacrylate portions (HA-EDA-BMP-MANa) has been employed for the production of a pH sensible vancomycin releasing hydrogel and studied in vitro to test its potential anti adhesive property against Staphylococcus aureus colonization. The copolymer obtained through atom transfer radical polymerization bears chargeable (carboxyl and amino groups) portions and it could be formulated as a hydrogel at a concentration of 10% w/v. The HA-EDA-BMP-MANa hydrogels, produced at three different pH values (5, 6 and 7, respectively), were formulated with or without the addition of vancomycin (2% w/v). The vancomycin releas…

Combined SANS and SAXS experiments in polyolefins-hydrogenated oligocyclopentadiene (HOCP) blends

1998

Abstract Lamellar morphology in semicrystyalline polymer blends (iPP/HOCP and HDPE/HOCP) is investigated by means of Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS). The investigated blends present a complex phase diagram, as they show a miscibility gap. SAXS scattering curves of blends lying outside the miscibility gap can be analysed in the frame of the psuedo two phase model. In order to describe the complex morphology of blends lying inside the miscibility gap, the SANS technique revealed necessary. In this paper a novel method to describe the morphology of these complex systems by means of SANS is presented.

Morphology of solid polymer electrolytes: a TR WAXS investigation

2002

A wide angle X-ray scattering investigation of (polyethylene oxide)n–sodium thiocyanate [(PEO)nNaSCN] mixtures is reported. Temperature dependence analysis for different mixtures is shown, in order to rationalize the multi-phase behaviour. Depending on the amount of salt added and upon the temperature considered three different phases have been found to simultaneously coexist: crystalline PEO, amorphous PEO, and crystalline complex.

Correlation between the molecular structure and the kinetics of decomposition of azamacrocyclic copper(II) complexes

2015

The formation of copper(II) complexes with symmetrical dinucleating macrocyclic ligands containing two either monomethylated (L1) or trimethylated (L2) diethylenetriamine (Medien or Me3dien) subunits linked by pyridine spacers has been studied by potentiometry. Potentiometric studies show that L1 has larger basicity than L2 as well as higher stability of its mono- and binuclear complexes. The crystal structures of L1·6HCl (1), [Cu2(L1)Cl2](CF3SO3)2 (2), [Cu2(L1)(OH)](ClO4)3·3H2O (3) and [Cu(L1)](ClO4)2 (4) show that L1 adopts different coordination modes when bound to copper(II). Whereas in 2, each copper(II) is bound to one Medien subunit and to one pyridine group, in 3 each metal center i…
