Medicated hydrogels of hyaluronic acid derivatives for use in orthopedic field.

2013

Physical hydrogels have been obtained from hyaluronic acid derivatized with polylactic acid in the presence or in the absence of polyethylene glycol chains. They have been extemporarily loaded with antibacterial agents, such as vancomycin and tobramycin. These medicated hydrogels have been used to coat titanium disks (chosen as simple model of orthopedic prosthesis) and in vitro studies in simulated physiological fluid have been performed as a function of time and for different drug loading and polymer concentration values. Sterilization process performed on the hydrogels does not change their rheological behavior and release properties as well as the chemical structure of starting copolyme…

Cost-effectiveness of sofosbuvir plus ribavirin with or without pegylated interferon for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C in Italy.

2015

Objective:Across Italy up to 7.3% of the population is infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), with long-term complications resulting in high medical costs and significant morbidity and mortality. Current treatment options have limitations due to side effects, interferon intolerability and ineligibility, long treatment durations and low sustained virological response (SVR) rates, especially for the most severe patients). Sofosbuvir is the first nucleotide polymerase inhibitor with pan-genotypic activity. Sofosbuvir, administered with ribavirin (RBV) and with or without pegylated interferon (PEG-INF), resulted in >90% SVR across treatment-naïve (TN) genotype (GT) 1-6 patients. It is also t…

Hyperhomocysteinemia and the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase C677T mutation in splanchnic vein thrombosis

2010

Introduction: The role that hyperhomocysteinemia (HH) and the C677T mutation in 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) play in splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) remains unclear due to this unusual thrombotic location. Objective: To analyse the possible association of HH with the C677T mutation in the MTHFR gene in SVT. Material and methods: We determined homocysteine levels and the C677T MTHFR mutation, along with classical cardiovascular risk factors, in 48 patients with SVT (18 Budd-Chiari syndrome, 11 mesenteric vein thrombosis, 19 portal vein thrombosis) and 84 controls. Results: In the univariate analysis, patients with SVT showed statistically higher homocysteine levels (P = …

Vasoactive intestinal peptide stimulation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate formation: further evidence for a role of nitric oxide synthase and cytos…

1993

In the rat pineal gland vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and beta-adrenergic agonists stimulate cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) formation and their action is amplified by alpha 1-adrenergic agonists. Since beta-adrenergic stimulation of cGMP is suggested to involve activation of nitric oxide (NO) synthase and NO-mediated activation of cytosolic guanylate cyclase (GC), we investigated the effects of the NO synthase inhibitor N-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA) and of the cytosolic GC inhibitor methylene blue (MB) on VIP receptor-stimulated cGMP formation. Both L-NMMA and MB depressed VIP-induced cGMP formation as well as alpha 1-adrenergic potentiation of VIP-stimulated cGMP formation …

Treatment of chronic hepatitis C in hemodialysis patients

2008

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is especially problematic in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who are undergoing hemodialysis. Rates of HCV infection are higher among hemodialysis patients than in the general population, and several routes of transmission are thought to stem from the dialysis unit. Management of chronic hepatitis C is also more complicated in hemodialysis patients because of altered pharmacokinetics and a predisposition for drug-related toxicity, particularly ribavirin-induced anemia. Clinical trials of patients with chronic hepatitis C and healthy, functioning kidney grafts are rare because of the inherent dangers of graft rejection. As a result, most studies…

Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (Onyx®) transarterial embolization for post-traumatic high-flow priapism

2016

International audience; We report a case of high-flow priapism treated successfully with superselective embolization of the cavernous artery. A 16-year-old male developed post-traumatic priapism subsequent to a fall causing blunt perineal trauma. He presented to our hospital four days after trauma. Immediately after the injury, he suffered painless sustained incomplete erection. High-flow priapism was diagnosed on the basis of color doppler ultrasonography findings. Computed tomography scan showed a high-flow arterio-venous fistula with feeders from branches of the right internal iliac artery. Selective arteriography of the right internal pudendal artery demonstrated an arterio-cavernous fi…

Effect of genetic polymorphisms involved in folate metabolism on the concentration of serum folate and plasma total homocysteine (p-tHcy) in healthy …

2015

Data on the effect of combined genetic polymorphisms, involved in folate metabolism, on the concentration of serum folate after folic acid supplementation are scarce. Therefore, we investigated the impact of seven gene polymorphisms on the concentration of serum folate and p-tHcy in healthy subjects after short-term folic acid supplementation. In a randomized, double blind, crossover study, apparently healthy subjects were given either 0.8 mg folic acid per day (n = 46) or placebo (n = 45) for 14 days. The washout period was 14 days. Fasting blood samples were collected on day 1, 15, 30 and 45. Data on subjects on folic acid supplementation (n = 91) and on placebo (n = 45) were used for the…

Factor V Leiden, C>T MTHFR Polymorphism and Genetic Susceptibility to Preeclampsia

1997

SummaryWe performed a case-controlled study to investigate whether the FV Leiden mutation and the C>T677 polymorphism of the 5,10 methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) are associated with the occurrence of preeclampsia in 96 otherwise healthy preeclamptic women and 129 parous women as controls. FV Leiden carriers were 10 (10.5%) in cases and 3 (2.3%) in controls (OR: 4.9, 95% Cl: 1.3-18.3). MTHFR TT homozygotes were 28 (29.8%) in cases and 24 (18.6%) in the control group (OR: 1.8,95% Cl 1.0-3.5). No difference in any of the polymorphisms was found between proteinuric (n = 45) and non-proteinur-ic (n = 51) patients. Moreover, MTHFR polymorphism does not affect the association betwe…

The effect of the calibre and length of needle on the stability of sclerosing foam.

2020

Objectives Little is known how calibre and length of needles affect the stability of sclerosing foam. Methods Foams were made of 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 3% polidocanol, and 0.2%, 0.5%, 1% and 3% sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS), which were mixed with air in the proportion of 4:1. These foams were ejected through needles with the length of: 4 mm, 6 mm and 13 mm, and diameter of: 0.26 mm, 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm. Results Foams made of more concentrated polidocanol were more stable. Regarding STS an opposite relationship was revealed. Foams made of polidocanol were more stable if ejected through a longer needle, while the length of needle did not significantly affect stability of STS foams. Foams ejected th…
