For a lay-flat drip line with an inner nominal diameter dn = 16 mm, characterized by three different pipe wall thicknesses, WT, 6, 8 and 10 mil, the Authors of the original paper very accurately investigated the geometrical expansion of the cross-sectional diameter as a function of different pressure head values, ranging in between 0.84-17.55 m. Results obtained by the Authors, for pressure heads not exceeding a threshold pressure value, showed significant d variations, in a very narrow range of pressure heads, which however is seldom considered in practice (less than 3 m). Abstract The assessment of forest damage is carried out throughout the European Community by evaluation of the loss and yellowing of leaves or needles. The results of this ocular damage diagnosis can be confirmed and stated more precisely by applying biochemical criteria, e.g. by monitoring ethylene, its precursor ACC (1-amino-cyclopropane-carboxylate) and the malonyl conjugate of ACC malonyl-amino-cyclopropane-carboxylate (MACC). Therefore we investigated ethylene emissions well as ACC and MACC contents in six Norway Spruce trees (Picea abies) each of eleven permanently monitored sites in the southwest of Germany. Evaluation of biodegradation of nonylphenol ethoxylate and lignin by combining toxicity assessment and chemical characterization.

Abstract The aerobic biodegradation of commercial nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) mixture and alkali lignin was studied using the OECD headspace test accompanied by the simultaneous measurement of ecotoxicity directly from the biodegradation liquors and by the follow-up of the chemical composition of the studied chemicals. NPE degradation was dependent on the inoculum source: approximately 40% of NPE was mineralized into CO2 during the 4-week experiment when inoculum from Helsinki City wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was used, and only 12% was mineralized when inoculum from Jyvaskyla City WWTP was used. Immobilized humic substances as sorbents

A new method was developed for the immobilization of humic substances. Humic acids (HA) immobilized onto different carriers were studied as sorbents for organic and inorganic substances. The sorption isotherms of 4-aminoazobenzene, Crystal Violet, Methylene Green, and flavine mononucleotide on immobilized HA show that pH and salt concentration have a significant effect on the sorption process, largely depending on the properties of polymeric matrix. Humic acids from different sources showed differing sorption capacity for the studied groups of substances.

Behaviour of EDTA in marine microcosms

Laboratory-scale microcosm tests were carried out in sea water with and without sediment to investigate the importance of ultraviolet (UV) light and microbes in the temperature-dependent degradation of metal complexes of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). After 17 weeks, 44% and 48% of the original EDTA (initial concentration 385 microg/L) were converted at 10 degrees C and 22 degrees C, respectively. The degradation was more influenced by UV light than by sediment microbes, although the latter were very important. Effect of surface finish on the mechanical behaviour of Dacron© 360 woven

Abstract In the present paper some experimental analyses of Dacron© 360 woven with and without surface treatment are presented to evaluate the effect of this treatment on the constitutive behaviour. This woven, widely adopted in sail manufacturing, is obtained by weaving polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarn and it shows some peculiar features due to the manufacturing process. The experimental tensile tests, clearly show the orthotropy behaviour of the material. The effect of the treatment results in a stiffer behaviour especially along the warp and bias direction and in an increment of ultimate strength in all directions.

Features and application of coupled cold plasma and photocatalysis processes for decontamination of water

Dielectric barrier discharge plasma and photocatalysis have been proposed as tools for decontamination of process water, especially in food industry. The present investigation aims to redefine and identify the features of coupling the two technologies in terms of degradation efficiency of a model compound. Results show that, when the process is carried out in plasma activated water in the presence of irradiated TiO2, the efficiency of the integrated process is lower than the sum of the two processes acting separately. This regulation established a positive list of substances that are authorized for use in plastic materials. Some compounds are subject to restrictions and/or specifications according to their toxicological data.
