Electrically induced deformation of giant liposomes monitored by thickness shear mode resonators.

Thickness shear mode resonators are capable of registering small changes in the thickness and viscoelastic properties of ultrathin films attached to their surface. It was found that it is possible to monitor the deformation of surface-bound giant liposomes by applying an electric field with small amplitudes. Changes in the apparent height of attached vesicles in the nanometer range were easily detected as a function of lipid composition. Increasing the bending modulus by adding cholesterol results in a significantly reduced deformation from 16.8 nm (5% cholesterol) down to 3.2 nm (20% cholesterol), rendering this new method a robust and sensitive tool to detect the bending elasticity of lip…

Greek Marschanapaste were first divided into dimeters by Alexandrian philologists. This division (that reflects a syntactical tendency) influenced Roman dramatists deeply. Plautus composed real anapaestic dimeters sometimes ordering them as a κατὰ στίχον series, sometimes (and more frequently) coupling them as septenarii or octonarii, but he did not compose κατὰ σύστηµα series (as scholars generally suppose) and most of these series are more conveniently interpreted as octonarii mixed with septenarii. Solution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy on a nanostructured diamond chip

We demonstrate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of picoliter-volume solutions with a nanostructured diamond chip. Using optical interferometric lithography, diamond surfaces were nanostructured with dense, high-aspect-ratio nanogratings, enhancing the surface area by more than a factor of 15 over mm^2 regions of the chip. The nanograting sidewalls were doped with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers so that more than 10 million NV centers in a (25 micrometer)^2 laser spot are located close enough to the diamond surface (5 nm) to detect the NMR spectrum of 1 pL of fluid lying within adjacent nanograting grooves. Anti-HLA alloantibodies of the IgA isotype in re-transplant candidates part II: Correlation with graft survival

We reported previously on the widespread occurrence of anti-HLA alloantibodies of the IgA isotype (anti-HLA IgA) in the sera of solid-organ re-transplantation (re-tx) candidates (Arnold et al., ). Specifically focussing on kidney re-tx patients, we now extended our earlier findings by examining the impact of the presence and donor specificity of anti-HLA IgA on graft survival. We observed frequent concurrence of anti-HLA IgA and anti-HLA IgG in 27% of our multicenter collective of 694 kidney re-tx patients. This subgroup displayed significantly reduced graft survival as evidenced by the median time to first dialysis after transplantation (TTD 77 months) compared to patients carrying either …
