The influence of adjuvant-induced arthritis of the rat on central and peripheral peptide neuroanatomy was investigated by immunohistochemistry. The most striking feature of arthritic rats was the differential intensification of neuronal proenkephalin- and prodynorphin-related staining in dorsal horn. Changes were ipsilateral in monoarthritic and bilateral in polyarthritic rats as compared to controls. Opioid responsive neurons were target of substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) fibers. Abstract By the use of light microscopic immunohistochemistry, the present study investigates whether substance P (SP) and calcitonin generelated peptide (CGRP), which are well documented neurotransmitter candidates in primary sensory fibers, are also expressed in parasympathetic neurons of the rhesus monkey lung. Abstract 1. The effects of SR 48692 on neurotensin (NT)-induced mechanical responses were investigated in rat duodenum and proximal colon by use of isometric, isovolumic preparations. 2. SR 48692 inhibited the relaxant responses to NT in duodenal circular and longitudinal muscle. It also antagonized the NT-induced contractile effects in duodenal circular muscle and in proximal colon (both muscular layers). 3. BACKGROUND: The recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the strongest survival-limiting factor after liver transplantation (LT) in patients with HCC. In the face of donor organ shortage, it is necessary to identify factors associated with HCC recurrence in order to maximize the utility of the available grafts. OBJECTIVE: To study the phenomenon of HCC recurrence after LT at a European transplantation centre over the past 20 years. The combination of psychosocial, medical, and educational care usually leads to immediate and long-term extra cost, which may pay out only decades later. This social and economic investment may be regarded by economists as being hardly affordable, especially during recession periods. However, we strongly believe that there are alternatives allowing adequate care even in times of economic turmoil. The aim of this report is to raise the awareness of the pediatric community and the public opinion toward the importance of investing in health programs offering adequate protection, prevention, and provision of care for orphan, abandoned, maltreated, and neglected children.
