2019
This manuscript describes the use of ultrasound elastography, with the exception of liver applications, and represents an update of the 2013 EFSUMB (European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology) Guidelines and Recommendations on the clinical use of elastography.
Oxidative Stress and Ubiquitin Ligases: their involvement in skeletal muscle atrophy
2015
Introduction Muscle atrophy plays a relevant role in the many very prevalent diseases. Generation of reactive oxygen species (mainly by the xanthine oxidase) and inflammation are two of the main triggers of muscle atrophy. Aim The major aim of our study was to determine the mechanism by which reactive oxygen species activate E3 ubiquitin ligases (MuRF-1 and MAFbx) cause muscle atrophy. Possible prevention by allopurinol, a well-known xanthine oxidase inhibitor widely used in clinical practice; and by indomethacin, a non-steroidal antiinflamatory drug was also studied. Materials and methods Male C57BL/6J mice (3 months old) conditioned by 14 days of hindlimb unloading with or without each tr…
Source strength determination in iridium-192 and cobalt-60 brachytherapy : A European survey on the level of agreement between clinical measurements …
2021
Background and purpose: Brachytherapy treatment outcomes depend on the accuracy of the delivered dose distribution, which is proportional to the reference air-kerma rate (RAKR). Current societal recommendations require the medical physicist to compare the measured RAKR values to the manufacturer source calibration certificate. The purpose of this work was to report agreement observed in current clinical practice in the European Union. Materials and methods: A European survey was performed for high- and pulsed-dose-rate (HDR and PDR) highenergy sources (Ir-192 and Co-60), to quantify observed RAKR differences. Medical physicists at eighteen hospitals from eight European countries were contac…
Graft rinse prior to reperfusion in liver transplantation: literature review and online survey within the Eurotransplant community
2015
Graft rinse prior reperfusion in liver transplantation (LT) is believed to reduce the incidence of postreperfusion syndrome and improve clinical outcome. A MEDLINE search was performed to obtain a comprehensive review of the published literature dealing with graft rinse in LT. Moreover, all thirty-four LT centers in the Eurotransplant (ET) region were invited to participate in an online survey to whether or not graft rinse is performed and whether further research in the field is needed. Seventeen reports have been found to investigate graft rinse protocols in 1894 LT recipients. Eighteen of the thirty centers that participated in the online survey performed graft rinse prior reperfusion in…
The European multicenter cohort study on cyanoacrylate embolization of refluxing great saphenous veins
2014
ObjectiveCyanoacrylate (CA) embolization of refluxing great saphenous veins (GSVs) has been previously described. The outcomes from a multicenter study are still lacking.MethodsA prospective multicenter study was conducted in seven centers in four European countries to abolish GSV reflux by endovenous CA embolization. Neither tumescent anesthesia nor postinterventional compression stockings were used. Varicose tributaries remained untreated until at least 3 months after the index treatment. Clinical examination, quality of life assessment, and duplex ultrasound evaluation were performed at 2 days and after 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.ResultsIn 70 patients, of whom 68 (97.1%) were available for 1…
The EHA research roadmap
2021
International audience; In 2016, the European Hematology Association (EHA) published the EHA Roadmap for European Hematology Research(1) aiming to highlight achievements in the diagnostics and treatment of blood disorders, and to better inform European policy makers and other stakeholders about the urgent clinical and scientific needs and priorities in the field of hematology. Each section was coordinated by 1-2 section editors who were leading international experts in the field. In the 5 years that have followed, advances in the field of hematology have been plentiful. As such, EHA is pleased to present an updated Research Roadmap, now including 11 sections, each of which will be published…
Neuropeptides, neurogenic inflammation and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
2008
This review explains symptoms and nature of neuropeptide signaling and its importance for clinical symptoms of CRPS. Neurogenic inflammation regularly accompanies excitation of primary afferent nociceptors. It has two major components-plasma extravasation and vasodilatation. The most important mediators are the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP). After peripheral trauma immune reaction (e.g. cytokines) and the attempts of the tissue to regenerate (e.g. growth factors) sensitize nociceptors and amplify neurogenic inflammation. This cascade of events has been demonstrated in rat models of CRPS. Clinical findings in these animals strongly resemble clinical findings in …

Increase in viral gastroenteritis outbreaks in Europe and epidemic spread of new norovirus variant.
2004
Background Highly publicised outbreaks of norovirus gastroenteritis in hospitals in the UK and Ireland and cruise ships in the USA sparked speculation about whether this reported activity was unusual. Methods We analysed data collected through a collaborative research and surveillance network of viral gastroenteritis in ten European countries (England and Wales were analysed as one region). We compiled data on total number of outbreaks by month, and compared genetic sequences from the isolated viruses. Data were compared with historic data from a systematic retrospective review of surveillance systems and with a central database of viral sequences. Findings Three regions (England and Wales,…
