Towards a Game-Design Framework for Evidence-Based Clinical Procedure Libraries

2019

Serious games have been and currently are used for multiple purposes other than just entertainment, such as education, healthcare or emergency management. This research presents game-design elements based on specific functional and professional requirements among which usability plays a key role. The aim of the research is to steer the direction towards a game-design framework for evidence-based clinical procedure libraries (eCPL). For context analysis and game-element presentation, a "serious application" example is shown to illustrate the improvement through game-design elements. A context analysis was required to select suitable game-design elements to target system usability and solve s…

An evidence based therapeutic approach to hereditary and acquired angioedema

2014

Purpose of review Hereditary angioedema (HAE) due to C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) deficiency (HAE-C1-INH), HAE with normal C1-INH, and acquired angioedema due to C1-INH deficiency are rare but important diseases that can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Research into the pathogenesis of angioedema has expanded greatly and has led to new clinical trials with novel therapeutic agents and strategies. Recent findings Strategies for managing HAE-C1-INH are aimed at treating acute attacks or preventing attacks through the use of prophylactic treatment. Agents available in Europe for treating acute attacks include plasma-derived C1-INH concentrates, a bradykinin B2 recepto…

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy in Finland

2020

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is one of the most commonly practiced psychotherapy orientations in Finland. It has secured continuity in the recently renewed university-based educational programs for training psychotherapists, although the proportion of psychoanalytic therapists in relation to other orientations has been decreasing during the past decade. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is reasonably well acknowledged in the Finnish Current Care Guidelines as one option in the treatment of the most common mental disorders, due to recent advances in effectiveness research. There is funding provided by the national insurance system for patients attending long-term rehabilitative psychotherapy. It h…

Negotiations with a risk assessment tool: Standardized decision-making in the United States and the deprofessionalization thesis

2017

AbstractThis article focuses on the challenges of decision-making in child protection. Comparative studies show that standardized risk assessment tools predict future maltreatment more accurately than interpretative assessment. Despite a long tradition of research on statistical decision-making, few studies deal with how such instruments are used and integrated into professional decision-making practice, and – from a transnational perspective – how specific national regulations influence such instruments and decision-making at street level. The article discusses concerns about the fact that such classification systems might have a negative impact on professional discretion. Based on a mater…

THE BEHAVE APPLICATION: AN EVIDENCE-BASED TOOL TO MANAGE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL BEHAVIOURAL DIFFICULTIES

2019

Social Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD) are a persistent and multiple manifestation of maladaptive behaviours which interfere with the students' learning, social functioning and development and/or that of their peers. They may become apparent through withdrawn, passive, aggressive or self-injurious tendencies. The prevalence of these disorders is 2-16% of the general population. Children with SEBD, diagnosed or not, are likely to live in social isolation, to receive a poor education, and they risk becoming deviant teenagers, or unemployed adults. A way to approach SEBD with consistent level of educational success is to equip teachers with proper training on practical and proven…

Use without training: A case study of evidence-based software design for intuitive use

2019

This paper reviews intuitive software design and outlines the development of an instrument for analysts to evaluate the intuitiveness of software design. Current intuition research outlines three requirements for intuitive use: (a) existing experiential domain knowledge and skills, (b) an unexplainable perception that a novel situation is contextually familiar, and (c) successful application of users’ previously acquired experiential knowledge and skills. A case study illustrates how these requirements can be specified, implemented, and evaluated. Questions to evaluate the characteristics of intuitive design and use resulted in an intuitive use evaluation of 3.2 on a scale of 0–4, indicatin…

VALIDITY AND INVARIANCE OF MEASUREMENT OF THE SATISFACTION WITH LOVE LIFE SCALE IN OLDER ADULTS

2020

In recent years, interest in satisfaction with love life (SWLL) has increased. Empirical evidence demonstrated that SWLL favors subjective well-being, physical and mental health, marital quality and stability. In this regard, the study aimed to examine evidence based on the internal structure validity, reliability, and measurement invariance of the Peruvian version of the Satisfaction with Love Life Scale (SWLLS). The participants were 323 older adults recruited from the region of San Martin (Peru) with an average age of 68.73 years (SD = 7.17). The sample comprised of 49.5% women and 50.5% men. The results supported the one-dimensional model and adequate reliability of the SWLLS. A multi-g…

Towards Evidence-Based Academic Advising Using Learning Analytics

2018

Academic advising is a process between the advisee, adviser and the academic institution which provides the degree requirements and courses contained in it. Content-wise planning and management of the student’ study path, guidance on studies and academic career support is the main joint activity of advising. The purpose of this article is to propose the use of learning analytics methods, more precisely robust clustering, for creation of groups of actual study profiles of students. This allows academic advisers to provide evidence-based information on the study paths that have actually happened similarly to individual students. Moreover, academic institutions can focus on management and upda…
