Lake size and fish diversity determine resource use and trophic position of a top predator in high-latitude lakes

2015

Prey preference of top predators and energy flow across habitat boundaries are of fundamental importance for structure and function of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as they may have strong effects on production, species diversity, and food-web stability. In lakes, littoral and pelagic food-web compartments are typically coupled and controlled by generalist fish top predators. However, the extent and determinants of such coupling remains a topical area of ecological research and is largely unknown in oligotrophic high-latitude lakes. We analyzed food-web structure and resource use by a generalist top predator, the Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus (L.), in 17 oligotrophic subarctic lakes…

The changing paradigm of document delivery : exploring researchers’ peer to peer practices

2016

Purpose By definition, interlibrary lending is a process involving two libraries. The digital revolution changed the method by which the scientific documents were disseminated during the past couple of decades. Nowadays, researchers can exploit several software applications that enable them to upload, save and deliver their documents from one peer to another without the need for a middle man. This paper reviews this change via a study conducted in two Finnish academic universities. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which researchers have adopted these new possibilities for document dissemination and how this change will affect the role of the libraries in document delive…

New genera, species and records of Phaneropterinae (Orthoptera, Phaneropteridae) from sub-Saharan Africa

2015

The results of the study of many specimens preserved in different European museums are reported. The tribe Terpnistrini Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 is resurrected. The distribution of the following species is enhanced: Pardalotaasymmetrica Karsch, 1896, Diogenadenticulata Chopard, 1954, Diogenafausta (Burmeister, 1838), Plangiopsisadeps Karsch, 1896, Poreuomenasanghensis Massa, 2013 and Tylopsiscontinua (Walker, 1869). Further, for their peculiar characteristics, two African representatives of the American genus Symmetropleura Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 are included in two new genera: Symmetrokarschiaafricana (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878), comb. n. and Symmetroraggeadirempta (Karsch, 1889)…

Rozważny i romantyczny? Wizje socjalizmu w dziennikach Ernesto Che Guevary i Mieczysława Rakowskiego

2017

The aim of this article is to analyze two visions of socialism, one - revolutionary (epitomized by the Ernesto Che Guevara), second - reformist (epitomized by the Polish journalist and politician Mieczysław F. Rakowski). Paper contains four chapters. Firstly, author compares both persons to main characters of the famous Cervantes book, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Second part is focused on the key ways of fighting - armed resistance to capitalism in the case of Che and peaceful work within ‘real socialism’ in the case of Rakowski. Then article describes Che’s and Rakowski’s relationships with empires and imperialisms, not only capitalist - like the United States, but also socialist - Sovie…

Wokół dramaturgicznego debiutu Felicjana Faleńskiego

2021

2015

In my article I present a spectacle of a director who, as one of many theatre artists, was able to connect interests of literature with historiosophy included in works worth to present on a stage. It was an excellent performer of the Polish theatre – Jerzy Jarocki – who died in 2012. The artist was fascinated with Russian history which bloomed during his studies on Russian Academy of Theatre Arts – one of the biggest theatre schools in the world. A few years in Moscow made him aware of complicated past of the Russian empire and let to know not only theatre events of this country. Thus, he mentioned this topic in his spectacles. What is essential, Jarocki, as one of the first directors in Po…

FMECA Application in Tomotherapy: Comparison between Classic and Fuzzy Methodologies

2022

Accident analysis in radiotherapy highlighted the need to increase quality assurance (QA) programs by the identification of failures/errors with very low probability (rare event) but very severe consequences. In this field, a Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) technique, used in various industrial processes to rank critical events, has been met with much interest. The literature describes different FMECA methods; however, it is necessary to understand if these tools are incisive and effective in the healthcare sector. In this work, comparisons of FMECA methodologies in the risk assessment of patients undergoing treatments performed with helical tomotherapy are reported. …

Investigation of a Gravel-Bed River’s Pattern Changes: Insights from Satellite Images

2021

Changes in river pattern have been documented in the literature. The recognition of islands and vegetated patches, which is indicative of the evolution processes, requires simultaneous information at different points and at different times and field studies are still difficult and scarce. The present work, focusing the attention on a gravel-bed river, explores the possibility to conduct a first-step pattern changes analysis by identifying the evolution of the morphological features and taking information of islands and vegetated patches from satellite images easily available from Google Earth. The study is conducted by combining the information taken from both the satellite images and the f…
