Numerical and experimental study of liquid metal stirring by rotating permanent magnets
2018
In this work, we study liquid gallium stirring by rotating permanent magnets. We demonstrate possibility of easily creating different flow patterns by rotating permanent magnets, which can be industrially important for controlling heat and mass transfer processes in the system. Unlike the typical approach of simulating magnet rotation as a transient problem and time-averaging the Lorentz forces, we solve the magnet rotation as a harmonic (frequency domain) problem, which leads to forces equal to time-averaged ones and decreases the simulation time considerably. Numerical results are validated using qualitative flow structure results from the neutron radiography visualization of tracer parti…

Masteroppgave idrettsvitenskap ME517 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Background: Sleep is important for both recovery and performance during training. Previous studies about sleep and performance are usually excecuted within competition periods, and measured by one or two of the three instruments Sensewear, Philips or PSQI.Aim: The aim of this study is to compare the questionnaire PSQI and the activity measure Sensewear with the Philips' goal of sleep, to investigate whether young top athletes have the recommended amount of sleep and whether there is a link between sleep and performance.Method: A total of 17 young top athletes participated in this study. To register the amount of sleep the ins…
Kidney Stones in Primary Hyperoxaluria: New Lessons Learnt
2013
To investigate potential differences in stone composition with regard to the type of Primary Hyperoxaluria (PH), and in relation to the patient’s medical therapy (treatment naïve patients versus those on preventive medication) we examined twelve kidney stones from ten PH I and six stones from four PH III patients. Unfortunately, no PH II stones were available for analysis. The study on this set of stones indicates a more diverse composition of PH stones than previously reported and a potential dynamic response of morphology and composition of calculi to treatment with crystallization inhibitors (citrate, magnesium) in PH I. Stones formed by PH I patients under treatment are more compact and…
The human X chromosome is enriched for germline genes expressed in premeiotic germ cells of both sexes.
2006
The role of X-chromosomal genes in spermatogenesis has been subject to a number of studies in different organisms. Recently, it was proposed that the X chromosome has a predominant role in premeiotic stages of mammalian spermatogenesis. We analyzed the expression of a representative set of 17 X-linked and 48 autosomal germline-restricted genes in different stages of human germ cell development. In accordance with data from other species, we show that the human X chromosome is indeed significantly enriched for genes activated in premeiotic stages of spermatogenesis. In contrast to recent studies, however, we found that expression of these genes is not restricted to spermatogenesis, but is ac…
GeneticParameters for Milk Somatic Cell Score and Relationships with Production Traits in Primparous Dairy Sheep
2007
A total of 13,066 first-lactation test-day records of 2,277 Valle del Belice ewes from 17 flocks were used to estimate genetic parameters for somatic cell scores (SCS) and milk production traits, using a repeatability test-day animal model. Heritability estimates were low and ranged from 0.09 to 0.14 for milk, fat, and protein yields, and contents. For SCS, the heritability of 0.14 was relatively high. The repeatabilities were moderate and ranged from 0.29 to 0.47 for milk production traits. The repeatability for SCS was 0.36. Flock-test-day explained a large proportion of the variation for milk production traits, but it did not have a big effect on SCS. The genetic correlations of fat and …
Between context and comparability: Exploring new solutions for a familiar methodological challenge in qualitative comparative research
2020
Finding the balance between adequately describing the uniqueness of the context of studied phenomena and maintaining sufficient common ground for comparability and analytical generalisation has widely been recognised as a key challenge in international comparative research. Methodological reflections on how to adequately cover context and comparability have extensively been discussed for quantitative survey or secondary data research. In addition, most recently, promising methodological considerations for qualitative comparative research have been suggested in comparative fields related to higher education. The article’s aim is to connect this discussion to comparative higher education rese…
Assessing the marginal cost of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the English and Welsh water and sewerage industry: A parametric approach
2021
Abstract Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions involves effort from different sectors of the economy, including the water and sewerage industry. This study estimates the marginal cost of curtailing GHG emissions in the water and sewerage industry using stochastic frontier analysis techniques for a sample of ten English and Welsh water and sewerage companies over the 2010–2019 period. Results illustrated that the average marginal cost of reducing GHG emissions was 0.181 £/Kg CO2 equivalent. The marginal cost estimated notably differs across companies and over time. Findings further illustrate the impact of water companies' operating characteristics on the marginal cost of reducing carbon e…
Ordering and dewetting in spin-coated films of a liquid crystalline main chain polymer
2006
Abstract The ordering of spin-coated films of a main-chain smectic liquid crystalline polymer with an azobenzene group connected by flexible spacers to a phenyl malonate unit has been studied as a function of film thickness using scanning force microscopy and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Already the as-prepared films are characterized by a significant out-of-plane orientation of the azobenzene groups. Annealing of films thicker than 7 nm results in aggregation and homeotropical alignment of azobenzene groups forming smectic layers parallel to the substrate. An optically isotropic mesophase was found upon annealing in the temperature range of smectic mesophase. Films thinner than the bilayer thickne…
