Topical Application of Glycolipids from Isochrysis galbana Prevents Epidermal Hyperplasia in Mice
2017
Chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis have a significant impact on society. Currently, the major topical treatments have many side effects, making their continued use in patients difficult. Microalgae have emerged as a source of bio-active molecules such as glycolipids with potent anti-inflammatory properties. We aimed to investigate the effects of a glycolipid (MGMG-A) and a glycolipid fraction (MGDG) obtained from the microalga Isochrysis galbana on a TPA-induced epidermal hyperplasia murine model. In a first set of experiments, we examined the preventive effects of MGMG-A and MGDG dissolved in acetone on TPA-induced hyperplasia model in mice. In a second step, we performed…
Visual quality with corneo-scleral contact lenses for keratoconus management
2018
Purpose: To assess the visual quality achieved by fitting corneo-scleral contact lenses (CScL) for keratoconus management. Methods: Thirty patients with keratoconus presented to have CScL fitted because of the unsatisfactory visual quality they experienced with their contact lenses or spectacles. The eye examination included visual acuity assessment, anterior eye biomicroscopy, ocular fundus examination, corneal topographic analysis, endothelialcell count, contrast sensitivity and aberrometry. The fitting process was performed using a diagnostic trial set. Subjective visual quality and comfort, and contact lens wear time were also reported. Patients were monitored for one year. Results: Thr…
Laparoscopy versus laparotomy for surgical treatment of obese women with endometrial cancer: A cost-benefit comparative analysis
2019
The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the cost of obese patients affected by endometrial cancer undergoing open surgery compared with minimally invasive surgery. In the retrospective cohort study (Canadian Task Force classification II-2), the economic expenditure in pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative phases of the selected patients was evaluated. Costs were analyzed for all blood tests, instrumental examinations, consultations, operating materials, drugs, gynecological examinations, hospital stay, intensive care hospitalization and management of operative complications. The average length of stay was longer for patients who underwent laparotomy, with an almost doubl…
Thyroid cartilage involvement in patient affected by IgA multiple myeloma: case report.
2008
Neoplasms originating from plasma cell are rare in the head and neck region. A correct clinical evaluation is very important in order to formulate a differential diagnosis as well as to distinguish local from metastatic disease. We report a case of larynx involvement by an IgA multiple myeloma in a 69-year-old female diagnosed in October 2004 and treated with chemotherapy; the 1 year control do not show progression of disease and the laryngeal lesion is unchanged. We highlight the radiological findings and clinical features to suspect plasma cell tumors in cases with a similar presentation.
[Use of imaging criteria to identify cervical metastases using CT scans in head and neck tumours].
2008
Abstract Objective To assess the diagnostic certainty of CT images to identify regional spread of head and neck tumours. Patients and method A CT study was performed on 86 patients with neoplasms in the larynx and/or pharynx. After this, surgical dissection was performed for 142 neck sides. In the imaging study the following parameters were considered for all patients before suspecting malignant nodes: size of adenopathy bigger than 10–11 mm, irregular borders, central necrosis, spherical shape, capsular enhancement, and presence of groups with 3 or more lymphadenopathies. Results 48.5% of dissections were N+. Sensitivity and specificity for physical examination were 59% and 82%, respective…
Lying and falsely implicating
2005
Abstract This paper analyses falsely implicating from the point of view of Gricean theory of implicature, focusing on the Story of the Mate and the Captain which is a classical example of lying while saying the truth. It is argued that the case of falsely implicating should be included within a general definition of lying. Whether Particularised Conversational Implicatures (PCI), as in the Story of the Mate and the Captain, and Generalised Conversational Implicatures (GCI) behave differently with regard to falsely implicating is discussed with reference to Levinson's theory of presumptive meaning [Levinson, Stephen C., 2000. Presumptive Meanings. The Theory of Generalised Conversational Imp…
Why Translation Is Difficult
2017
The paper develops a definition of translation literality that is based on the syntactic and semantic similarity of the source and the target texts. We provide theoretical and empirical evidence that absolute literal translations are easy to produce. Based on a multilingual corpus of alternative translations we investigate the effects of cross-lingual syntactic and semantic distance on translation production times and find that non-literality makes from-scratch translation and post-editing difficult. We show that statistical machine translation systems encounter even more difficulties with non-literality.
Pisteis in Comparison: Examples and Enthymemes in the Rhetoric to Alexander and in Aristotle's Rhetoric
2011
Today it is generally accepted that the main differences between the "Rhetoric to Alexander" and Aristotle’s "Rhetoric" depend on the different aims of each work’s author: essentially practical in the first case, theoretical in the second one. The difference is clearly visible in the classification of pisteis (proofs). Our basic assumption is that this difference depends on the two majors elements of novelty in Aristotle's Rhetoric: 1. the introduction in the rhetorical field of the logico-dialectical apparatus (above all, the concept of syllogismos); 2. the consideration of ethos and pathos as entechnoi pisteis. In order to specify this general consideration, the paper focuses on enthymema…
Kielitutkinto porttina Suomeen ja astinkivenä suomen kieleen
2017
Aineistona ovat paluumuuttovalmennukseen osallistuneiden, tutkintoon valmistautuneiden henkiloiden (n = 97) vastaukset kyselyyn, jonka he tekivat ennen kielitutkinnon suorittamista. Aineistoa tarkastellaan sisallonanalyysin keinoin. Aineiston perusteella kielenoppijat tiesivat tutkinnon rakenteesta ja sen suorittamisesta tietokoneella. Suorittajat olivat hyvin tietoisia myos siita, …
Modulation of Nitric Oxide Production by Tetracyclines and Chemically Modified Tetracyclines
1999
Chemically modified tetracyclines (CMTs) dose-dependently decreased inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and, consequently, nitric oxide (NO) formation by the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated J774 line. The inhibitory effect was due to a specific reduction in the iNOS protein content in the cells, as attested by Western blot analysis and by the inhibition of iNOS mRNA accumulation. Furthermore, CMTs cause a dose-dependent increase in cell death in the J774 line mediated by the NO-independent apoptotic mechanism.
