Four Career Stories from Doctoral Students to Doctoral Holders : Qualitative Longitudinal Examination

2023

Aims: Universities and their doctoral programs open a range of career opportunities for doctoral students and doctors. There is a need to problematize assumptions related to the construction of doctoral careers. This study addresses this need by examining the development of doctoral career paths and the factors influencing them from a qualitative longitudinal perspective. This study focuses on the narrative career stories of doctoral students and doctoral graduates from a temporal perspective and at the individual level.
Study Design: The study was conducted as qualitative longitudinal research among Finnish doctoral students and later same persons as doctoral holders (N=9). The aim o…

The combined effect of lower extremity function and cognitive performance on perceived walking ability among older people : a 2-year follow-up study

2018

Background We studied the combined effects of cognitive performance and lower extremity function on self-reported walking modifications and walking difficulty and on self-reported walking difficulty incidence over a 2-year follow-up. Methods A total of 848 community-dwelling older people aged 75-90 years participated at baseline, 816 at the 1-year follow-up, and 761 at the 2-year follow-up. Baseline lower extremity function was measured with the Short Physical Performance Battery (<10 vs. ≥10) and cognitive performance with the Mini-Mental State Examination (<24 vs. ≥24). Difficulty in walking 2 km was self-reported and categorized into no difficulties, no difficulties but walking modificat…

Self-reported symptoms in women with diastasis rectus abdominis: A systematic review

2021

Abstract Introduction Diastasis rectus abdominis (DRA) diagnosis via clinical examination is well defined, however, the assessment of symptoms has been less investigated. Currently, there is also scant knowledge on the consequences of DRA. The aim of this review is to identify the relevant self-reported variables in the study of DRA in women. Methods We performed a systematic review of observational studies through Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. Studies evaluating the link between DRA and self-reported symptoms were searched using the following terms: "Diastasis rectus abdominis", "Diastasis recti", "Abdominis Rectus Muscle Diastasis", "Questionnaire", "Scale", "Survey", "…

INTESTINAL INFECTION BY CRYPTOSPORIDIUM IN THREE CHILDREN WITH ABDOMINAL PAIN AND CHRONIC DIARRHOEA

1985

Children infection by Cryptosporidium sp. have been communicated since 1976 usually associated to acute diarrohoeal disease. This protozoa has been isolated recently in SIDA patients with serious illness. Three new cases, the first of spanish pediatric literature, are described in this paper. Children were males; two of them twins. Age ranged 24 to 27 m. All lived in Valencia, and went to infant's school with high stand of living and domestic animal relationship. The most frequent symptom was well located colic abdominal pain with day predominance and 2 months of evolution in the twins. The third case began with abdominal pain and discomfort. Lymphatic Mesenteric Cyst, a Rare Cause of Surgical Abdominal Pain: Case Report and Review of the Literature

2020

A lymphatic mesenteric cyst (LMC) is a rare clinical entity, of unclear etiopathogenesis, which can arise in the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneum without a clear origin. We describe a case of a 74-year-old male presenting with abdominal pain that was non-specific and non-responsive to medical therapy. Laboratory tests clinical examination were inconclusive while the abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a cystic lesion of the ileal mesentery. We performed an open surgical excision of the lesion with the resolution of clinical symptoms. The lesion resulted to be an LMC at the histological examination. At the five-year CT scan follow-up, we did not record any recurrences. LMCs pre…

State of the Art-High-Sensitivity Troponins in Acute Coronary Syndromes.

2020

In cases of suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS), rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential to establish effective evidence-based medical treatment. Patients' history, clinical examination, 12-lead electrocardiogram, and cardiac biomarkers are cornerstones in initial management. Since high-sensitivity cardiac troponins were established, they have markedly expedited and revolutionized rule-in and rule-out pathways of patients with ACS and changed our everyday clinical practice. Thus, they have become an indispensable tool in daily routine in emergency units. This review focuses on historical and contemporary standards in laboratory biomarkers of myocardial injury and discusses their impli…

Bilateral buccal space lipoma: A rare case presentation

2019

Background The lipoma of the oral cavity is a relatively rare pathology, characterized by overgrowth of the mature adipocytes. Buccal fat pad lipomas usually interfere with the esthetics and the function of the face. Case Report A sixteen-year-old patient reported slow-growing swelling, which started two years ago. Clinical examination revealed two bilateral masses in the soft tissue. MRI imaging revealed a characteristic image of bilateral lipomas connected to the buccal fat pad. Surgical removal was conducted and the histology report confirmed our clinical diagnosis of common lipoma. Discussion The lipoma of the buccal fat pad is a benign neoplasm of the adipose tissue. It should be remov…

Digital Rectal Examination (Fig. 2a and 2b)

1979

During examination of the anal region and before doing the rectal examination, the hand is protected by a plastic glove. A number of disposable gloves of varying strengths are on the market. One may additionally use a finger cot on the forefinger, which is removed after the examination. The examination can also be done using a finger cot alone with the finger stuck through a piece of gauze that protects the rest of the hand. Right-handed examiners often elect to use the forefinger of the left hand for the rectal examination and keep the right hand uncontaminated for handling instruments.
