The European Business excellence model and its improvement
2020
Nowadays the practice of self-assessment is the strategy recommended by the EFQM Excellence Model for organizations aiming for improvement on organizational performance. Rigorous self-assessment helps large, small and medium companies work more efficiently, and it is a comprehensive, systematic and regular exercise for the evaluation of companies’ activities and results. Today’s customers have higher requirements than ever before. Therefore, in order to be competitive in the twenty first century, organizations need to improve continuously, meet the standards of excellence in quality and performance. One of the ways to achieve excellence is the use of Business Excellence Models. The aim of t…
Customer value in tourism and hospitality: Broadening dimensions and stretching the value-satisfaction-loyalty chain
2019
Abstract Customer value research consists of two main streams, with broad recognition in tourism literature: value dimensions (intra-variable perspective) and relationships among value, satisfaction and loyalty (inter-variable perspective). The conceptual framework reviews and categorizes graphically both streams, evidencing the need of research combining both perspectives. The empirical study uses PLS to validate among a sample of 340 hotel guests, a comprehensive causal model with a high number (eight) of value dimensions -functional (efficiency and excellence), social (status and esteem), hedonic (aesthetic and entertainment) and altruistic (ethics and escapism). Moreover, the model adds…
European Political Science and Global Knowledge
2018
In this chapter, the author maintains that rankings of universities and their social carriers participate in the relatively successful practical realization of the academic standards they seek to codify and of the shaping of reality according to the criteria they promote. In this sense, global university rankings are becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy, a prediction that becomes true through positive feedback of varying intensity. They have succeeded in establishing through quantitative objectification certain types of equivalences between scientific excellence and numerical indicators. The reasons for their success are their performative efficiency (‘scientific’, quantitative) and the prac…
A COMPARISON OF BUSINESS EXCELLENCE MODELS
2019
Nowadays, there is a rising trend of implementing different Business Excellence frameworks also known as Quality Models for the improvement of organizational business performance. Models or Quality Award Model are used to recognize the best practice in the different areas. Many countries of the world adapt these models as their quality improvement tools for business assessment in comparison with the competitors. The research is focused on the review of the major Business Excellence Models such as Deming Prize, European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) and Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) and their influence. The research is primarily based on theoretical approach that…
Transversal Competences for Employment and Profile of Excellent University Students
2014
Abstract The relationship between the field of training -university- and the working environment is absolutely essential. The university must train its students to satisfy the needs of society, to build knowledge and to develop critical thinking but it cannot elude the commitment to prepare competent professionals. This paper shows the growing interest in researching on the labour insertion of graduates. The concept of competence is analysed and the differences between generic and specific competences are studied. The generic or transversal competences proposed by the Tuning project and other studies are delimited. Such competences, considered as key competences for employment, are contrast…
Leading agritourism facilities along Nearly Zero Energy paths: proposal of an easy-to-use evaluation method
2020
The tourist sector, despite the present severe constraints imposed by the sanitary emergence, can be considered as an important component of almost all countries’ economies. In Italy agriturism, in particular, has been experiences a continuously rising trend in recent years. Clearly, such great interest towards these businesses also calls for a deep attention by an energy point of view, in sight of an energy efficiency improvement, hence a lowering of the pressure that such facilities exert to the natural environment. On the other hand, the European Union has been engaged, for a long time, in awarding the tourist accommodations environmental excellence brands, like the EU Ecolabel. Unfortun…
Nurses' Experiences of Caring for Older Persons in Transition to Receive Homecare: Being Somewhere in between Competing Values
2013
Older persons in transition to need professional care in their homes will constitute a large group in municipalities in the future. The aim of this study was to obtain insight into nurses' experiences and perceptions of caring for patients in transition to receive homecare. Eleven home nurses divided into two focus groups were interviewed, and a phenomenological hermeneutical design was used. Four interpretations closely related to each other were revealed: it is essential to have an understanding of the patients' transition history; the nurse' repertoire is challenged in the transition process; care must be adapted to the patients' life world; the excellence of care is threatened by the co…
Generation of programmable 3D optical vortex structures through devil’s vortex-lens arrays
2013
Different spatial distributions of optical vortices have been generated and characterized by implementing arrays of devil's vortex lenses in a reconfigurable spatial light modulator. A simple design procedure assigns the preferred position and topological charge value to each vortex in the structure, tuning the desired angular momentum. Distributions with charges and momenta of the opposite sign have been experimentally demonstrated. The angular velocity exhibited by the phase distribution around the focal plane has been visualized, showing an excellent agreement with the simulations. The practical limits of the method, with interest for applications involving particle transfer and manipula…
Scientific communication or a qualification for an academic career? What use is publishing papers in psychology journals?
2018
Lyman break and ultraviolet-selected galaxies at z ̃ 1-I. Stellar populations from the ALHAMBRA survey
2013
We take advantage of the exceptional photometric coverage provided by the combination of GALEX data in the ultraviolet (UV) and the ALHAMBRA survey in the optical and near-infrared to analyse the physical properties of a sample of 1225 GALEX-selected Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at 0.8 ≲ z ≲ 1.2 that are located in the COSMOS field. This is the largest sample of LBGs studied in this redshift range to date. According to a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with synthetic stellar population templates, we find that LBGs at z ̃ 1 are mostly young galaxies with a median age of 341 Myr and have intermediate dust attenuation, (Es(B - V)) ̃ 0.20. Owing to the selection criterion, LBGs at z ̃…
