Efficient synthesis of racemic and chiral alkenyl sulfoxides by palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling

2010

Alkenyl sulfoxide derivatives are obtained in high yields through a palladium-catalyzed Suzuki/Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of racemic and chiral 1-halo sulfoxides with aryl and alkenyl boronic acids. Chiral substrates react with no loss of optical purity and high optical yields. The reaction takes place with different palladium catalysts, such as Pd(PPh 3 ) 4 or Pd(OAc) 2 /DABCO. Although nitrogen ligands like DABCO lead to an active palladium catalyst, they are less effective than the phosphine ones.

Non-surgical correction of gummy smile using temporary skeletal mini-screw anchorage devices : a systematic review

2021

Background There are no studies that have systematically reviewed randomized control trials and/or prospective cohort studies that have assessed the significance of temporary skeletal mini-screw anchorage devices (TSAD) for the correction of gummy-smile. The aim of the present systematic review was to assess the significance of non-surgical correction of gummy smile using TSAD. Material and methods The addressed focused question was "Are temporary skeletal mini-screw anchorage devices effective for the correction of gummy smile?" Indexed databases were searched up to and including May 2020. Different combinations of the following key-indexing terms were used: anchorage; gummy smile, mini-sc…

Lip repositioning technique. A simple surgical procedure to improve the smile harmony

2018

Excessive gingival display is an esthetic concern for patients. It is a condition in which an overexposure of the maxillary gingiva (>3mm) is present during smiling. There are different etiologies of a gummy smile, such as vertical maxillary excess, short and hyperactive upper lip, altered passive eruption, anterior dentoalveolar extrusion, or a combination of these causes. The correct diagnosis of all etiologic factors is imperative for its appropriate management. Many techniques have been used to restore the dentogingival relation for the management of gummy smile. Lip repositioning is a conservative surgical technique used to treat excess gingival display. It is a largely unknown treatme…

Short term association between ozone and mortality: global two stage time series study in 406 locations in 20 countries

2020

Objective To assess short term mortality risks and excess mortality associated with exposure to ozone in several cities worldwide. Design Two stage time series analysis. Setting 406 cities in 20 countries, with overlapping periods between 1985 and 2015, collected from the database of Multi-City Multi-Country Collaborative Research Network. Population Deaths for all causes or for external causes only registered in each city within the study period. Main outcome measures Daily total mortality (all or non-external causes only). Results A total of 45 165 171 deaths were analysed in the 406 cities. On average, a 10 µg/m3 increase in ozone during the current and previous day was associated with a…

Photons, Photon Jets and Dark Photons at 750 GeV and Beyond

2016

In new physics searches involving photons at the LHC, one challenge is to distinguish scenarios with isolated photons from models leading to "photon jets". For instance, in the context of the 750 GeV diphoton excess, it was pointed out that a true diphoton resonance $S \to \gamma\gamma$ can be mimicked by a process of the form $p p \to S \to a a \to 4\gamma$, where $S$ is a new scalar with a mass of 750 GeV and $a$ is a light pseudoscalar decaying to two collinear photons. Photon jets can be distinguished from isolated photons by exploiting the fact that a large fraction of photons convert to an $e^+e^-$ pair inside the inner detector. In this note, we quantify this discrimination power, an…

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness and Sleep Disorders in a Population of Patients with Epilepsy: a Case-Control Study

2016

Background and purpose There are several primary causes for excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and sleep disorders in patients with epilepsy. Up to now, studies in the literature report conflicting data in terms of both prevalence and aetiology. The aim of our study was therefore to evaluate the prevalence of EDS and some sleep disorders in a population of patients with epilepsy treated with no more than two antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). We also investigated the role of the depression of mood as a variable that can negatively affect EDS. Methods We prospectively and consecutively recruited 99 patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy, sleep disorders and EDS, belonging to the Centre for Epilepsy …

Oxygen-excess amorphous SiO2 with 18O-labeled interstitial oxygen molecules

2011

Abstract Exchange between oxygen molecules embedded in amorphous SiO 2 (interstitial O 2 ) and oxygen atoms in the a -SiO 2 network is found to be remarkably slow at 500 °C. Thermal loading of 18 O 2 at this temperature yields a -SiO 2 containing 18 O-labeled interstitial O 2 whose 18 O fraction is as high as ~ 90%. The 18 O fraction of interstitial O 2 in this sample is quickly decreased by thermal annealing at or above 700 °C because of the oxygen exchange accompanied by the release of 16 O from the a -SiO 2 network. This finding indicates that the oxygen exchange starts at much lower temperatures than indicated by previous works, based on monitoring of the isotopic composition of oxygen …

XMM-Newton spectroscopy of the metal depleted T Tauri star TWA 5

2005

We present results of X-ray spectroscopy for TWA 5, a member of the young TW Hydrae association, observed with XMM-Newton. TWA~5 is a multiple system which shows Halpha emission, a signature typical of classical T Tauri stars, but no infrared excess. From the analysis of the RGS and EPIC spectra, we have derived the emission measure distribution vs. temperature of the X-ray emitting plasma, its abundances, and the electron density. The characteristic temperature and density of the plasma suggest a corona similar to that of weak-line T Tauri stars and active late-type main sequence stars. TWA 5 also shows a low iron abundance (~0.1 times the solar photospheric one) and a pattern of increasin…

Disc loss and renewal in A0535+26

1999

This paper presents observations of the Be/X-ray binary system A0535+26 revealing the first observed loss of its circumstellar disc, demonstrated by the loss of its JHK infrared excess and optical/IR line emission. However optical/IR spectroscopy reveals the formation of a new inner disc with significant density and emission strength at small radii; the disc has proven to be stable over 5 months in this intermediate state.

Multiwavelength observations of the Be/X-ray binary 4U1145-619

1997

We report optical and infrared observations of the massive X-ray binary system 4U1145-619 (V801 Cen) which show that the circumstellar disc of the Be star component is in decline. Infrared J,H,K,L magnitudes of V801Cen have been monitored from 1993 March to 1996 April. H alpha spectra have been obtained throughout the same period. We find that both the infrared excess and the Balmer emission have been in decline throughout the period of observations. A 13 year optical and X-ray history of the source has been collated, revealing a possible correlation between the optical and X-ray activity. In addition, we have used u,v,b,y,beta indices, corrected for both circumstellar and interstellar effe…
