A Vastly Increased Chemical Variety of RNA Modifications Containing a Thioacetal Structure
2018
International audience; Recently discovered new chemical entities in RNA modifications have involved surprising functional groups that enlarge the chemical space of RNA. Using LC-MS, we found over 100 signals of RNA constituents that contained a ribose moiety in tRNAs from E. coli. Feeding experiments with variegated stable isotope labeled compounds identified 37 compounds that are new structures of RNA modifications. One structure was elucidated by deuterium exchange and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The structure of msms2 i6 A (2-methylthiomethylenethio-N6-isopentenyl-adenosine) was confirmed by methione-D3 feeding experiments and by synthesis of the nucleobase. The msms2 i6 A contai…
Ryanodine receptor- and sodium-calcium exchanger-mediated spontaneous calcium activity in immature oligodendrocytes in cultures
2019
Myelination in the central nervous system depends on interactions between axons and oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs). Action potentials in an axon can be followed by release of biologically active substances, like glutamate, which can instruct OPCs to start myelination. Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) is an "executive molecule of myelin" required for the formation of compact myelin. As cells of the oligodendrocyte lineage (OLCs) are capable of producing MBP in pure oligodendrocyte cultures, i.e. without neurons, we investigated Ca2+ signaling in developing OLCs in cultures. We show that spontaneous Ca2+ transients (CTs) occur at very low frequency in both bipolar OPCs and mature oligodendr…
Changes in the international wine market competitiveness
2017
This study offers a contribution to understanding the complexity of the international wine trade analysing the specialisation patterns of 14 among the most important wine world actors in the period 2007â2016, in order to verify if the patterns of comparative advantages for the trade of this countries have experienced significant changes. Using the Lafay index, as a comparative advantage measure, our results reveal deep changes in the global wine market exchange. Our result constitutes a base element for the future development of the competitive scenario and provides some both theoretical and practical implications. In the baseline projection, the maintenance of the competitive position is…
The integration of autophagy and cellular trafficking pathways via RAB GAPs.
2015
Macroautophagy is a conserved degradative pathway in which a double-membrane compartment sequesters cytoplasmic cargo and delivers the contents to lysosomes for degradation. Efficient formation and maturation of autophagic vesicles, so-called phagophores that are precursors to autophagosomes, and their subsequent trafficking to lysosomes relies on the activity of small RAB GTPases, which are essential factors of cellular vesicle transport systems. The activity of RAB GTPases is coordinated by upstream factors, which include guanine nucleotide exchange factors (RAB GEFs) and RAB GTPase activating proteins (RAB GAPs). A role in macroautophagy regulation for different TRE2-BUB2-CDC16 (TBC) dom…

Current concepts in the prevention of pathogen transmission via blood/plasma-derived products for bleeding disorders
2015
The pathogen safety of blood/plasma-derived products has historically been a subject of significant concern to the medical community, Measures such as donor selection and blood screening have contributed to increase the safety of these products, but pathogen transmission does still occur. Reasons for this include lack of sensitivity/specificity of current screening methods, lack of reliable screening tests for some pathogens (e.g. prions) and the fact that many potentially harmful infectious agents are not routinely screened for. Methods for the purification/inactivation of blood/plasma-derived products have been developed in order to further reduce the residual risk, but low concentrations…
Housing market shocks in italy: A GVAR approach
2020
Abstract In this paper, we use a Global Vector Autoregression (GVAR) model to assess the spatio-temporal mechanism of house price spillovers, also known as “ripple effect”, among 93 Italian provincial housing markets, over the period 2004 − 2016 . In order to better capture the local housing market dynamics, we use data not only on house prices but also on transaction volumes. In particular, we focus on estimating, to what extent, exogenous shocks, interpreted as negative housing demand shocks, arising from 10 Italian regional capitals, impact on their house prices and sales and how these shocks spill over to neighbours housing markets. The negative housing market demand shock hitting the G…
Let's Talk Biology – Developing a Model for Incorporating English-Speaking Experts into the (Bilingual) Science Classroom
2019
We present an instructional approach to incorporate into biology lessons an exchange of videos between international practicing scientists and secondary-school students. We validated the approach in German school settings in three curricular contexts: genetics, cell biology, and immunology. The participating students (n = 255) were native speakers of German with a background of English as a foreign language. The three participating scientists, English-speaking experts from the United Kingdom and Uganda, were rooted in different fields that were related to the respective curricular topics. We explain how the video exchange model was developed and evaluate students' comments and suggestions f…
¿Una feria de cambios a la valenciana? Debate financiero y energía emprendedora en el siglo XVII
2020
In 1619 Philip IV sent to print a Real Pragmatic [Royal Pragmatic legislation] that would regulate changes between Valencia and Medina del Campo being introduced by Valencian merchant families to enable them to receive interest on their loans without being accused of usury. Only three years later, in 1622, the Republic of Genoa inaugurated the exchange fairs of Novi Ligure, with which the Genoese consolidated their international position in the international credit market. These apparently independent circumstances constitute an important episode for international financial knowledge and the transformation of the Mediterranean credit market during the seventeenth century. Studying financial…
Artefact co-construction in virtual exchange: 'Youth Entrepreneurship for Society'
2020
The aim of this research study around the co-construction and sharing of authentic and meaningful artefacts within the 'Youth Entrepreneurship for Society' virtual exchange was to find out how the implementation of artefact-based telecollaborative tasks fosters 21st competences and social entrepreneurship in English for Specific Purposes settings. The project tasks were informed by constructionism and supported virtual collaboration an effort to promote social justice. They revolved around social entrepreneurship in English for Specific Purposes contexts, aiming to connect the classroom with the outside world through the involvement of local organisations, while fostering students' twenty-f…
