Numerical evaluation on performances of AHU equipped with a cross flow heat exchanger in wet and dry operation

2012

Abstract In this paper the comparison between the performance of a cross flow heat exchanger in wet and dry operation for air handling process has been investigated. In addition, a case study of application of the component to perform indirect evaporative cooling in a AHU was studied with the software TRNSYS.Using experimental data and an appropriate analytical method, energy saving performances of the system has been evaluated through the entire cooling season for a typical Mediterranean site. Results show that high energy saving potential can be obtained if the component is operated in wet operation in term of reduction of electricity consumption.

Machine learning for energy cost modelling in wastewater treatment plants.

2018

Understanding the energy cost structure of wastewater treatment plants is a relevant topic for plant managers due to the high energy costs and significant saving potentials. Currently, energy cost models are generally generated using logarithmic, exponential or linear functions that could produce not accurate results when the relationship between variables is highly complex and non-linear. In order to overcome this issue, this paper proposes a new methodology based on machine-learning algorithms that perform better with complex datasets. In this paper, machine learning was used to generate high-performing energy cost models for wastewater treatment plants, using a database of 317 wastewater…

THE COMPETITIVE DEMANDS OF ELITE MALE RINK HOCKEY

2013

The aim of this study was to simulate the activity pattern of rink hockey by designing a specific skate test (ST) to study the energy expenditure and metabolic responses to this intermittent high-intensity exercise and extrapolate the results from the test to competition. Six rink hockey players performed, in three phases, the 20-metre multi-stage shuttle roller skate test, a tournament match and the ST. Heart rate was monitored in all three phases. Blood lactate, oxygen consumption, ventilation and respiratory exchange ratio were also recorded during the ST. Peak HR was 190.7±7.2 beats · min(-1). There were no differences in peak HR between the three tests. Mean HR was similar between the …

Academic capitalism and the informational fraction of the transnational capitalist class

2013

This article is based on the idea that if we are witnessing an on-going shift towards the transnational phase of capitalism, this objective structural change should also be taken into account in higher education studies. In this sense, this article reflects the increased scholarly attention into the relationship between globalisation and higher education since the 1990s. The main purpose of this article is to contribute to these discussions by developing dialogue between global capitalism theories and the theory of academic capitalism. In order to achieve this, William Robinson's concept of the transnational capitalist class (TCC) will be amended to include also the informational fraction. …

Finnish mergers : Change in the Context of Continuity

2016

This chapter focuses on three prominent university mergers in Finland which took place during the last decade. In order to understand the mergers and the developments that led to them, we highlight broader higher education policy change, most notably the making and implementation of the new Universities Act (558/2009). The changing discourse around the role of higher education (Nokkala, 2016) and the changing of the Universities Act took place in parallel to the merger processes, thus forming the broader political context which the structural development took place. In our analysis, we take as our central perspective the roles of the national actors to introduce national translations and so…

The Micro-Macro Interfaces of Higher Education, Innovation, Regional Growth and Regional Development

2018

This chapter highlights the relevance of micro-macro interfaces for the study of investment inflows in higher education, as an impulse concept, in the development of economies on a regional scale, as a response concept. The term ‘micro-macro interfaces’ refers to the systems of interactions that combine and channel the efforts made by individuals, often within collective organizations, to achieve their personal goals and the objectives set at the organizational level, and how the results from those efforts, once aggregated territorially, drive the rhythm of economic growth and the directions of regional development. The analysis brings together theory, research and practice from economics, …

Epistemic cooperation scripts in online learning environments: Fostering learning by reducing uncertainty in discourse?

2005

Using online learning environments in higher education offers innovative possibilities to support collaborative learning. However, online learning creates new kinds of problems for participants who have not previously worked with each other. One of these problems is uncertainty which occurs when participants do not know each other. According to the uncertainty reduction theory, low uncertainty level increases the amount of discourse and decreases the amount of information seeking. Therefore, uncertainty may influence online discourse and learning. This study investigates the effects of an epistemic cooperation script with respect to the amount of discourse, information seeking and learning …

Development of a conceptual model of sustainable building from a university

2021

Introduction: In this paper, the authors aim is to develop a conceptual model that aims to facilitate the processes of implementing sustainability and / or assessment of sustainable performance in a Higher Education Building (HEB). The conceptual model could also be used to compare two or more buildings of higher education in terms of sustainability. Methodology: The authors started the scientific research with the literature review in order to identify and analyze the most relevant aspects that are frequently assess and could influencing the components of sustainability in higher education institutions. These aspects were clustered into categories and for each of them were established obje…

Monitoring soil volume wetness in heterogeneous soils by electrical resistivity. A field-based pedotransfer function.: A field-based pedotransfer fun…

2014

11 pages; International audience; Modern irrigation techniques require accurate, rapid, cost-effective, spatial measurement of soil moisture. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) meets most of these requirements, but needs to be calibrated for each use because it is very sensitive to differences in soil characteristics. In this study, a pedotransfer function approach is used to remove the need for site-specific calibration, allowing ERT to be used directly to measure soil moisture. The study site was a hillslope vineyard, where eight calcaric-cambisol soil profiles were identified. From 2012 to 2013, 23 000 soil volume wetness measurements were acquired by Time Domain Reflectometry, and …

An Overview of Public Concerns During the Recovery Period after a Major Earthquake: Nepal Twitter Analysis

2016

In responding to disasters, Twitter is extensively used, both for information exchange and mapping the crisis, among citizens, and in relation to national and international humanitarian responders. This paper reports Twitter analysis aimed at identifying the most pressing issues that arose in the short term recovery phase starting about a week after the Nepal earthquake, including the heretofore neglected topic of mismatch between international relief and local cultures. Based on Twitter data collected between April 30th and May 6th 2015. 1,074,864 raw messages apparently related to the Nepal earthquake were retrieved, filtered and analyzed. This exploratory adapts established frameworks fo…
