2004
Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2004 Oct;36(10):1723-9. Airway cell composition at rest and after an all-out test in competitive rowers. Morici G, Bonsignore MR, Zangla D, Riccobono L, Profita M, Bonanno A, Paternò A, Di Giorgi R, Mirabella F, Chimenti L, Benigno A, Vignola AM, Bellia V, Amato G, Bonsignore G. SourceDepartment of Experimental Medicine Italian National Research Council (CNR), Palermo, Italy. Abstract PURPOSES: This study was designed to assess: a) whether rowing affects airway cell composition, and b) the possible relationship between the degree of ventilation during exercise and airway cells. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In nine young, nonasthmatic competitive rowers (mean age +/- SD: 16.2 …
Effects of progressive resistance exercise in akinetic-rigid Parkinson's disease patients: a randomized controlled trial.
2017
Progressive resistance exercise (PRE) can have a positive effect in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, the effect of PRE may vary with the clinical subtype of PD. To date, no study has assessed the effects of PRE in the different subtypes of PD. AIM: The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of PRE in PD patients with akinesia and rigidity (AR-subtype). DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial was conducted. SETTING: Outpatients clinics of the Bierzo Parkinson Association (Ponferrada, Spain) and the Asturias Parkinson Association (Oviedo, Spain). POPULATION: Twenty-eight patients with AR-subtype PD were randomized into an Experimental Group (EG, N.=13) and Control…
Biomechanical Comparison Between Sprint Start, Sled Pulling, and Selected Squat-Type Exercises
2013
The purpose of this study was to compare kinetics, kinematics, and muscle activity among sprint start, sled pulling, and selected squat-type exercises (countermovement jumps [CMJs] and 1/2-squats with various loads) and also to examine how these exercises correlate with the performance time of the block start (10 m). Nine male athletes (4 sprinters, 3 decathlonists, 1 long jumper, and 1 triple jumper: age = 24.9 ± 3.9 years; 100-m record = 11.35 ± 0.29 seconds; track and field training years = 11.8 ± 3.1 years) volunteered as subjects. The comparisons were made with regard to the block phase (the phase of force production toward starting blocks) of the block start. In nearly all exercises, …
Exploiting system fluctuations. Differential training in physical prevention and rehabilitation programs for health and exercise
2010
Background. Traditional causal modeling of health interventions tends to be linear in nature and lacks multidisciplinarity. Consequently, strategies for exercise prescription in health maintenance are typically group based and focused on the role of a common optimal health status template toward which all individuals should aspire. Materials and methods. In this paper, we discuss inherent weaknesses of traditional methods and introduce an approach exercise training based on neurobiological system variability. The significance of neurobiological system variability in differential learning and training was highlighted. Results. Our theoretical analysis revealed differential training as a meth…
Peak Exercise Oxygen Uptake Predicts Recurrent Admissions in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction
2018
Introduction and objectives: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a highly prevalent syndrome with an elevated risk of morbidity and mortality. To date, there is scarce evidence on the role of peak exercise oxygen uptake (peak VO2) for predicting the morbidity burden in HFpEF. We sought to evaluate the association between peak VO2 and the risk of recurrent hospitalizations in patients with HFpEF. Methods: A total of 74 stable symptomatic patients with HFpEF underwent a cardiopulmonary exercise test between June 2012 and May 2016. A negative binomial regression method was used to determine the association between the percentage of predicted peak VO2 (pp-peak V02) and rec…
Muscle strength and range of movement deficits 1 year after hip resurfacing surgery using posterior approach.
2009
The aim was to evaluate the effect of the posterior surgical approach on hip muscle strength and range of movement (ROM).Maximal isometric external and internal rotator strength of the hip muscles and bilateral leg extension strength were measured by dynamometers. Active (AROM) and passive (PROM) range of motion of the hip were measured by goniometers in 30 patients before and 3, 6 and 12 months after hip resurfacing. Postoperatively the patients were advised to return to their usual physical activities.Prior to the surgery internal rotation strength was on the same level on both sides, whereas external rotation strength of the operated hip was 26% (p0.001) lower compared with the unoperate…
Prognostication of post-infarct chronic heart failure: superiority of clinical assessment vs. cardiopulmonary and left ventricular function analysis.
2009
Prognostication of congestive heart failure post-myocardial infarction (MI) is important for decision making. We sought of a head-to-head comparison between the prognostic implication of clinical, cardiopulmonary, and left ventricular (LV) function assessment.Retrospectively, 100 consecutive post-MI patients (MI history 1418+/-1668 days ago) were stratified by NYHA functional classification system, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) [oxygen consumption at maximal exercise (VO(2max)) and at the anaerobic threshold (VO(2AT)) resulting in the Weber classification], and LV function analysis by M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography [LV end-diastolic and -systolic diameter index (LVDDI …
Does increased serum creatine kinase activity reflect exercise-induced muscle damage in rats?
1995
To test a hypothesis that exercise-induced increase in serum creatine kinase activity and the concomitant necrotic muscle damage in unaccustomed rats may be interrelated phenomena, and that the first might largely be caused by changes in lymph flow, groups of rats were separately exposed to a swimming, combination of swimming and running, and running protocol. Their serum was then repeatedly analysed over a period of 72 h for creatine kinase activity, and their soleus and the red parts of quadriceps femoris muscles for beta-glucuronidase activity (damage marker) 72 h after the commencement of the experiment, i.e. at a moment when muscle damage is in the necrotic phase. The results clearly s…
Prednisolone decreases exercise-induced acid hydrolase response in mouse skeletal muscle.
1984
Male NMRI-mice were subjected to exhaustive treadmill exercise. 3 and 6 days after the exertion, quadriceps femoris muscles were examined histologically and analyzed for acid hydrolases in order to follow the degree and progress of injuries. Prednisolone (PRED), an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, was given to some of the animals in order to modify the exercise response. The PRED administration began 14 h before exercise and continued until the end of the experiment (6 days). The doses were 25 and 50 mg . kg-1 i.p. twice a day. The activities of both arylsulphatase and beta-glucuronidase increased significantly in the exercise control group after 3 and 6 days. The increase in activity corr…
Effects of a physical exercise intervention on subjective physical well-being, psychosocial functioning and general well-being among office workers: …
2006
The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a workplace physical exercise intervention on subjective physical well-being, psychosocial functioning and general well-being. The study was a cluster randomized-controlled trial with the department (n=4) as the unit of randomization. The subjects (n=90) were office workers [mean age 45.7 (SD 8.5) years]. Psychosocial functioning and well-being variables were measured by descriptive visual rating scales. The cross-over design consisted of one 15-week intervention period of light resistance training and guidance and another 15-week period of no training and no guidance. The statistical analysis was based on linear mixed models. The activ…
