RETA A TU MENTE, DESAFÍA A TU CEREBRO: COMPLEJIDAD AMBIENTAL Y SALUD CEREBRAL
2016
Abstract.According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that more than 30 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease in the world. Currently, there is great interest in developing strategies to counteract the cognitive decline that accompanies aging and, to a greater extent, neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of the current study is to analyze the experimental evidence supporting the hypothesis that interventions based on novelty and complexity are more effective in order to achieve successful aging. In animal models it has shown that enriched environments and performing voluntary exercise can improve performance in learning and memory tasks, decrease anxiety response and …
Ricci-flow based conformal mapping of the proximal femur to identify exercise loading effects.
2018
AbstractThe causal relationship between habitual loading and adaptive response in bone morphology is commonly explored by analysing the spatial distribution of mechanically relevant features. In this study, 3D distribution of features in the proximal femur of 91 female athletes (5 exercise loading groups representing habitual loading) is contrasted with 20 controls. A femur specific Ricci-flow based conformal mapping procedure was developed for establishing correspondence among the periosteal surfaces. The procedure leverages the invariance of the conformal mapping method to isometric shape differences to align surfaces in the 2D parametric domain, to produce dense correspondences across an…
Depresijas simptomu izplatība universitātes studentiem, kuri piedalās ikdienas fiziskajās aktivitātēs
2022
Nosaukums: Depresijas simptomu izplatība universitātes studentiem, kuri piedalās ikdienas fiziskajās aktivitātēs Autors: Leo El-Achkar Darba vadītājs: Andis Užāns, MD Darba aktualitāte: Depresīvi simptomi negatīvi ietekmē cilvēka garīgo stāvokli un labizjūtu. Ilgstoši šie simptomi var izraisīt klīnisku depresiju. Depresijas simptomi var būt plašā spektrā no viegliem līdz tādiem, kur dominē domas par pašnāvību. Fiziskā aktivitāte var dažādi ietekmēt depresīvu simptomu izpausmi atkarībā no pacienta vecuma, mobilitātes, fiziskās slodzes vai citiem stresa faktoriem. Mērķis: tika veikta tiešsaistes aptauja, lai izpētītu depresijas simptomu izplatību galvenokārt studentiem, kuri piedalās ikdienas…

Kardiopulmonale Parameter bei Hyperthyreose
1999
Background Hyperthyroid patients often suffer from impaired exercise capacity with dyspnoea. Two well established, non-invasive methods were used to evaluate the influence of hyperthyroidism on cardiopulmonary function. Patients and methods In 42 patients with hyperthyroidism we performed spirometry and cardiopulmonary exercise testing before and after 7 days of propranolol therapy as well as in euthyroidism. Results In hyperthyroidism reduced vital capacity and 1-second capacity were observed (95.5 +/- 2.4% vs 102.6 +/- 1.5%; p = 0.0087; 89.4 +/- 2.3% vs 95.2 +/- 2.2%; p = 0.0179). No changes showed during beta-blockade. At the anaerobic threshold reduced tidal volume and enhanced respirat…
Exercise-Induced Sustained Ventricular Tachycardia without Structural Heart Disease: A Case Report
2020
Patient: Female, 51-year-old Final Diagnosis: Ventricular tachycardia Symptoms: Chest pain • shortness of breath Medication: — Clinical Procedure: Treadmill stress echocardiogram Specialty: Cardiology Objective: Unusual clinical course Background: Exercise-induced ventricular tachycardia (VT) has been widely reported in patients with preexisting structural heart disease or underlying ischemia and is attributed to reentry tachycardia and abnormal automaticity. However, studies regarding exercise-induced VT in individuals without evident structural heart disease are still limited. Case Report: A 51-year-old woman came to our practice for a treadmill stress echocardiogram. The patient experien…
Benchmarking of strength models for unidirectional composites under longitudinal tension
2018
© 2018 Elsevier Ltd Several modelling approaches are available in the literature to predict longitudinal tensile failure of fibre-reinforced polymers. However, a systematic, blind and unbiased comparison between the predictions from the different models and against experimental data has never been performed. This paper presents a benchmarking exercise performed for three different models from the literature: (i) an analytical hierarchical scaling law for composite fibre bundles, (ii) direct numerical simulations of composite fibre bundles, and (iii) a multiscale finite-element simulation method. The results show that there are significant discrepancies between the predictions of the differe…
Effect of Running Exercise on Oxidative Stress Biomarkers: A Systematic Review
2021
Background: Exercise induced health benefits are limited by the overaccumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS and further oxidative stress could potentially induce muscle damage which could result in poor exercise performance. However, predicting ROS induced oxidative stress in response to endurance training has several limitations in terms of selecting biomarkers that are used to measure oxidative stress. Objective: The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate the suitable biomarkers that predict oxidative stress status among runners. Methods: According to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement, a search for relevant …
Efficacy of coronary revascularization in patients with acute chest pain managed in a chest pain unit.
2009
To investigate the safety of discharge of patients deemed at low risk of cardiac events after evaluation in a chest pain unit and to determine the prognostic effect of revascularization of patients deemed at high risk. The study population consisted of 1088 patients presenting at the emergency department from January 15, 2001, to September 1, 2006, with chest pain but without ischemia on electrocardiography or troponin elevation. Patients were managed by a chest pain unit protocol that included early exercise testing. Three groups of patients were distinguished: (1) those discharged after exercise testing (424 [39%]); (2) those in whom unstable angina was ruled out after in-hospital evaluati…
