A Group-Based 8-Week Functional Interval-Type Outdoor Training Program Improves Physical Performance in Recreationally Active Adults

2022

Even though physical activity is an important aspect of health, lack of time or motivation impede people from working out regularly. One type of training program that is both efficient and motivating is functional interval-type outdoor training. To evaluate this, our study had 81 participants complete a battery of physical performance tests (incremental treadmill test, core stability test and functional fitness test) before and after an 8-week outdoor interval-type training intervention. Training procedures included multimodal and high-intensity exercises performed in consistent, small groups. Results showed that the interval training program produced significant increases in the interventi…

Maturation-Related Differences in Neuromuscular Fatigue After a Short-Term Maximal Run

2017

AbstractPurpose. This study investigated maturation-related differences in neuromuscular fatigue after a short-term maximal run. Methods. Eight male children, eight adolescents, and eight adults performed a maximal ca. 50-s run (300/350/400 m, respectively). Mechanisms of neuromuscular fatigue were assessed through isometric plantar flexor tests, electrical stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve, soleus electromyography, and blood tests. Results. All the groups showed a decrease in the running speed (children: -12.2 ± 6.5%; adolescents: -9.8 ± 5.1%; adults: -12.2 ± 3.1%), but only adults revealed a decline in the maximal isometric plantar flexor torque (-16.1 ± 13.0%). On the other hand,…

Is physical activity a cause of longevity? It is not as straightforward as some would believe : A critical analysis

2018

There are discrepant findings between (A) observational follow-ups and (B) interventional studies that investigate possible causal association between high physical activity and low mortality. Participation in vigorous physical activity at a specific time-point is an indicator of good fitness and health, and is associated with a reduced risk of death. However, neither randomised controlled trials nor experimental animal studies have provided conclusive evidence to show that physical activity started during adulthood extends lifespan. Consequently, the undisputed health-related benefits of exercise have yet to translate into any proven causal relationship with longevity. Physical activity im…

Movement characteristics during customized exergames after total knee replacement in older adults

2022

Introduction: There is limited understanding of how older adults can reach kinematic goals in rehabilitation while performing exergames and conventional exercises, and how similar or different the kinematics during exergaming are when compared with conventional therapeutic exercise with similar movement. The aim of this study was to describe the movement characteristics performed during exercise in custom-designed exergames and conventional therapeutic exercises among patients who have undergone unilateral total knee replacement (TKR). In addition, the secondary aim was to assess the relation of these exercise methods, and to assess participants' perceived exertion and knee pain during exer…

Validation of 2D Force Measurement Roller Ski and Practical Application.

2022

Several methods could be used to measure the forces from skis or roller skis in cross-country skiing. Equipment that could measure medio-lateral forces may be of good help for investigating the relevant skating techniques. The aim of this study was to validate a pair of newly designed two-dimensional force measurement roller skis. The vertical and medio-lateral forces which were perpendicular to the body of the roller ski could be measured. Forces were resolved into the global coordinate system and compared with the force components measured by a force plate. A static and dynamic loading situation for the force measurement roller ski was performed to reveal the validity of the system. To de…

Trajectories of mobility limitations over 24 years and their characterization by shift work and leisure-time physical activity in midlife

2019

Background We aimed to investigate trajectories of mobility limitations (MLs) over a period of 24 years. In addition, we aimed to study how shift work and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) in midlife predict assignment to MLs trajectories separately for those retired on statutory pensions (SPs) and on disability pensions (DPs). Methods Subjects who responded MLs questionnaires (1985–2009, N = 3048) in Finnish Longitudinal Study on Aging Municipal Employees were included in this prospective cohort study. LTPA and shift work were measured during baseline. International Classification of Functioning was used to code MLs. Growth mixture modeling was used to identify the trajectories of MLs.…

Digital Coaching Motivating Towards Physical Activity in Japan During the Covid-19 Pandemic

2023

COVID-19 influenced peoples lives enormously and its impact was also seen in physical activity and exercising. This mixed methods intervention study highlights some of the impact the pandemic had on the physical activity and exercising behaviors of 10 Japanese information systems employees and students. This study also focuses on the influence that using sport and wellness technology digital coaching had on peoples’ physical activity, exercise motivation and exercise self-efficacy during the pandemic. Based on the findings digital coaching can have motivational elements to support people towards a more physically active lifestyle for example by making users more aware of their own physical …

Kannustin, koriste ja liikkujan kaveri : tutkimus liikuntateknologian käyttäjyydestä

2017

During the last couple of decades, information technology has become a ubiquitous part of almost all areas of everyday life; exercise and sports being no exception. Sports technology can be defined as digital entities, with which one can measure, record and analyse data on sports and physical activity, and refine it according to the needs of its users. This kind of technology has already been researched quite extensively. The majority of this research has concentrated on the effects of sports technology on the level of physical activity of its users, and on the adherence of users to different kinds of physical activity recommendations. In addition to this, within this research, sports techn…

Filozofia jako ćwiczenie duchowe. Coachingowy model uprawiania filozofii

2018

W trzecim paragrafie pokazuję, w jaki sposób Wiktor Frankl nawiązuje do coachingowej tradycji uprawiania filozofii w swojej praktyce terapeutycznej. W czwartym przedstawiam przykłady zastosowania modelu coachingowego w dydaktyce filozofii.

PROTEOMIC CHANGES INDUCED BY LOW-INTENSITY ENDURANCE EXERCISE IN MDX MOUSE QUADRICEPS: CORRELATION WITH REDUCTION OF MUSCLE DEGENERATION.

2015

Previous study showed that low-intensity endurance exercise induced a significant recovery of damaged skeletal muscle in mdx mice, probably by reducing the degeneration of dystrophic muscle1. In order to explore the molecular basis of this observation, we perfomed a proteomic analysis to evaluate changes in proteins profiling of quadriceps dystrophic muscles of exercised versus sedentary mdx mice. Four protein spots were found significantly changed and were identified as three isoforms of Carbonic anhydrase 3 (CA3) and as superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] (SODC). Protein levels of CA3 isoforms were found significantly up-regulated in quadriceps of sedentary mdx mice (MDX-Sed) and were completely…
