Novel silver-based nanoclay as an antimicrobial in polylactic acid food packaging coatings.

2010

This paper presents a comprehensive performance study of polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposites, obtained by solvent casting, containing a novel silver-based antimicrobial layered silicate additive for use in active food packaging applications. The silver-based nanoclay showed strong antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative Salmonella spp. Despite the fact that no exfoliation of the silver-based nanoclay in PLA was observed, as suggested by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments, the additive dispersed nicely throughout the PLA matrix to a nanoscale, yielding nanobiocomposites. The films were highly transparent with enhanced water barrier …

Gold-assisted mechanical exfoliation currently represents a promising method to separate ultralarge (centimeter scale) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers (1L) with excellent electronic and optical properties from the parent van der Waals (vdW) crystals. The strong interaction between Au and chalcogen atoms is key to achieving this nearly perfect 1L exfoliation yield. On the other hand, it may significantly affect the doping and strain of 1L TMDs in contact with Au. In this paper, we systematically investigated the morphology, strain, doping, and electrical properties of large area 1L MoS2 exfoliated on ultraflat Au films (0.16-0.21 nm roughness) and finally transferred to an i…

Temperature influence on the synthesis of pristine graphene oxide and graphite oxide

2015

Abstract Derivative oxide carbon materials, such as graphene or graphite oxides, have been recently considered to be a promising material in a wide scenarios of emerging technologies due to their physical and chemical properties, as well as, for their low production costs. Even if apparently similar, these materials exhibit different physical and chemical properties. One of the critical issue is associated with the exfoliation process and contributes to the formation of graphene oxide and graphite oxide material. Here, we show a single synthetic wet method to produce graphene or graphite oxide by applying a control of the operational temperature during the reaction. The process was optimise…

Molecular stabilization of chemically exfoliated bare MnPS3 layers

2021

Transition metal chalcogenophosphates of general formula MPX3 have attracted recent interest in the field of 2D materials due to the possibility of tuning their properties when reaching the 2D limit. Several works address this challenge by dry mechanical exfoliation. However, only a few of them use a scalable approach. In this work, we apply a general chemical protocol to exfoliate MnPS3. The method uses in a first step chemical intercalation and liquid phase exfoliation, followed in a second step by the addition of molecules used as capping agents on the inorganic layers. Therefore, molecules of different nature prompts the quality of the exfoliated material and its stabilization in aqueou…

Illustrating the processability of magnetic layered double hydroxides: layer-by-layer assembly of magnetic ultrathin films.

2013

We report the preparation of single-layer layered double hydroxide (LDH) two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets by exfoliation of highly crystalline NiAl-NO3 LDH. Next, these unilamellar moieties have been incorporated layer-by-layer (LbL) into a poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/LDH nanosheet multilayer ultrathin film (UTF). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) profiles have been used to follow the uniform growth of the UTF. The use of a magnetic LDH as the cationic component of the multilayered architecture enables study of the resulting magnetic properties of the UTFs. Our magnetic data show the appearance of spontaneous …

Substrate impact on the thickness dependence of vibrational and optical properties of large area $MoS_2$ produced by gold-assisted exfoliation

2021

The gold-assisted exfoliation is a very effective method to produce large-area ($cm^2$-scale) membranes of molybdenum disulfide ($MoS_2$) for electronics. However, the strong $MoS_2/Au$ interaction, beneficial for the exfoliation process, has a strong impact on the vibrational and light emission properties of $MoS_2$. Here, we report an atomic force microscopy (AFM), micro-Raman ($\mu-R$) and micro-Photoluminescence ($\mu-PL$) investigation of $MoS_2$ with variable thickness exfoliated on Au and subsequently transferred on an $Al_2O_3/Si$ substrate. The $E_{2g}$ - $A_{1g}$ vibrational modes separation $\Delta\mu$ (typically used to estimate $MoS_2$ thickness) exhibits an anomalous large val…

From Layered Molybdic Acid to Lower-Dimensional Nanostructures by Intercalation of Amines under Ambient Conditions

2006

Nanostructures of varied dimensionality such as rods, scrolls, and disks of molybdenum oxide have been synthesized in gram quantities under ambient conditions using exfoliation of the layers as a synthetic tool. Intercalation of alkylamines (CnH2n+2NH2, where n = 3, 4, 8, 12, and 16) into yellow molybdic acid (MoO3·2H2O) and subsequent treatment with nitric acid resulted in molybdenum oxide nanorods, nanodisks, or oxide−amine composite nanorods. The sizes of the nanoparticles range from a few nanometers to micrometers in length and 10 to 200 nm in diameter. Detailed X-ray, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy analyses reveal an inverse relation between the size…

Synthesis and optimization of microwave-assisted exfoliated functionalized graphene as an efficient catalyst in biodiesel production

2018

In this study, the capability of functionalized graphene was investigated as heterogeneous catalyst in biodiesel production from vegetable oil. Graphene oxide was fabricated from graphite via carrier improved method, and its exfoliation was carried out by microwave radiation. The exfoliated sample was reduced and sulfonated, being analyzed by Fourier transform Infrared, Scanning Microscopy Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and element mapping. The catalyst was employed in biodiesel production reaction and effective reaction parameters were studied. The optimized reaction temperature, time and catalyst percentage were 178 °C, 3 h and 1.9% respectively. It was observed that …

The effect of partial exfoliation of multilayer silicate filler particles on the elastic properties of a polymer composite

2018

Abstract A method for stepwise calculation the elastic constants of a three-phase composite, including the polymer matrix, the fully exfoliated silicate nanolayers and the platelike silicate particles in the form of multilayer intercalated stacks is considered. A theoretical analysis is carried out by using the Mori–Tanaka theory of an equivalent medium. The influence of degree of exfoliation (the ratio of exfoliated filler content to the total filler content) on the reinforcing efficiency is studied and discussed. A comparative analysis of experimental data of elastic modulus for a rigid polyurethane/montmorillonite composite and prediction results is carried out. It is shown, that with gr…

Structural studies of adsorbed protein (betalactoglobulin) on natural clay (montmorillonite)

2014

International audience; In this work, the adsorption of a small globular protein (betalactoglobulin, BLG), on a natural montmorillonite clay (Mt) was investigated in acidic buffer (pH = 3). The combination of different characterization techniques such as zetametry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electronic microscopy, fluorescence and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies shed light on the interaction mechanism between the clay mineral and the proteins. For low BLG concentration, a slight increase of the interlayer spacing of the clay mineral was noticed as well as structural changes of the protein. In contrast, as the concentration of BLG increased, the adsorption led to a…
