Bridging Mediterranean cultures in the International Year of Soils 2015: A documentary exhibition on irrigation techniques in water scarcity conditio…

2017

The paper presents the activity performed at the University of Brescia by students and researchers, belonging to different Mediterranean cultures and different disciplines, to prepare a documentary exhibition on irrigation techniques in water scarcity conditions, on the occasion of the International Year of Soils 2015. Traditional irrigation techniques were identified as a key aspect of soil conservation and agricultural practices, to build living and autopoietic ecosystems, also in adverse climatic conditions, and to adapt to climatic changes. Being a structural source of ecosystem survival, and being based on long-lasting observation of the climate and of the environment, they have deep r…

Representation of Latvian Mithology in works of Hilda Vika

2013

The paper includes the study on activities of the Latvian painter and writer Hilda Vika - Eglīte (1897-1963) in the field of visual art (mostly painting) connected with Latvian mythology. Latvian myth characters and themes came into H. Vika’s creative work after 1930 when she married writer and reviewer Viktors Eglitis and resorted to “Dievturība” (Latvian Neopagan religious movement based on folklore, old folk songs and mythology). Actively and productively working H. Vika participated in numerous group art exhibitions. Her individual vision, decorative solutions of composition and stylized details brought in Latvian painting unusual and essentially different intonations being contemporary…

Assembling Reminders for a Particular Purpose: Paolozzi’s Ephemera, Toys and Collectibles

2019

This chapter addresses the centrality of environmental installations in Paolozzi’s late production and the relevance that the practice of “assembling reminders for a particular purpose” holds in his understanding of the artist’s profession, further constituting another aspect of affinity with Wittgenstein. In order to do so, Mantoan examines three aspects that are instrumental to understand Paolozzi’s ‘collecting mood’ that led him to assemble a rich variety of items, ephemera, toys and objects of popular culture: the first one concerns the likely origins of this attitude, grounded in his childhood years, as well as in the influence of Parisian Surrealism and American mass culture; the seco…

Network ties in the international opportunity recognition of family SMEs

2011

Abstract The importance of network ties is emphasized in the current literature on opportunity recognition. However, it is unclear how firms with limited bridging networks, such as family SMEs, recognize international opportunities through their network ties. In this case study we found that in gaining foreign market entry, those family SMEs that lack existing network ties recognize opportunities through weak ties formed in international exhibitions. The findings also indicate that rather than being proactive, family SMEs respond reactively to opportunities that emerge coincidentally. The trustfulness of the tie is important when they consider these opportunities and form new ties for inter…

The Image of Spain as Tourist Destination Built Through Fictional Cinema

2008

Fictional cinema is one of the cultural agents that shapes the international image of each country. It colonizes spectators’ imagery, and it can influence their choice of tourist destinations. Spanish cinema’s international diffusion has allowed the exhibition of movies that spread and renew the image of Spain in different ways. In this respect, we propose a three-fold typology of films focusing our attention on their content and the ways in which they build the image of Spain: Icon Films, Pastiche Films, and Tourist Poster Films. These films may stimulate the increase of a cultural tourism very different from the traditional one that inspired many to come to Spain mainly looking for sunny …

Psychological and behavioral outcomes of social media-induced fear of missing out at the workplace

2021

Abstract The intense proliferation of social media platforms into every facet of human lives has engaged researchers' attention towards understanding their adverse influences, referred to as the dark side of social media (DoSM) in the evolving literature. A relatively unexplored context in this regard is employees' personal use of social media during work hours and its impact on work-related outcomes. Since using social media during work hours can have implications for work performance and productivity, the lack of research in the area needs to be addressed by scholars sooner rather than later. Specifically, it is important to understand the drivers and outcomes of such behaviour. We have t…
