Modified majoron model for cosmological anomalies

2020

The vacuum expectation value $v_s$ of a Higgs triplet field $\Delta$ carrying two units of lepton number $L$ induces neutrino masses $\propto v_s$. The neutral component of $\Delta$ gives rise to two Higgs particles, a pseudoscalar $A$ and a scalar $S$. The most general renormalizable Higgs potential $V$ for $\Delta $ and the Standard-Model Higgs doublet $\Phi$ does not permit the possibility that the mass of either $A$ or $S$ is small, of order $v_s$, while the other mass is heavy enough to forbid the decay $Z\to A S$ to comply with LEP 1 data. We present a model with additional dimension-6 terms in $V$, in which this feature is absent and either $A$ or $S$ can be chosen light. Subsequentl…

Conformal sector of quantum Einstein gravity in the local potential approximation: Non-Gaussian fixed point and a phase of unbroken diffeomorphism in…

2008

We explore the nonperturbative renormalization group flow of quantum Einstein gravity (QEG) on an infinite dimensional theory space. We consider ``conformally reduced'' gravity where only fluctuations of the conformal factor are quantized and employ the local potential approximation for its effective average action. The requirement of ``background independence'' in quantum gravity entails a partial differential equation governing the scale dependence of the potential for the conformal factor which differs significantly from that of a scalar matter field. In the infinite dimensional space of potential functions we find a Gaussian as well as a non-Gaussian fixed point which provides further e…

Gauge and Yukawa unification with broken R-parity

1998

We study gauge and Yukawa coupling unification in the simplest extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) which incorporates R-Parity violation through a bilinear superpotential term. Contrary to what happens in the MSSM, we show that bottom-tau unification at the scale M_GUT where the gauge couplings unify can be achieved for any value of tan(beta) by choosing appropriately the sneutrino vacuum expectation value. In addition, we show that bottom-tau-top unification occurs in a slightly wider tan(beta) range than in the MSSM.

Knowledge expectations of recently diagnosed patients with knee osteoarthritis

2016

Aim The aim of this study was to assess the socio-demographic and disease-related symptoms and emotions and knowledge expectations of patients recently diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis. A further aim was to determine associations between selected demographic variables and patients' expected knowledge. Background Patient counselling and information provision are recommended for all patients with knee osteoarthritis. In healthcare centres, there is a good possibility to establish the knowledge expectations of patients with knee osteoarthritis during counselling. Recent empirical evidence indicates a lack of research on knowledge expectations among recently diagnosed patients with knee osteo…

A Naïve Sticky Information Model of Households’ Inflation Expectations

2009

This paper provides a simple epidemiology model where households, when forming their inflation expectations, rationally adopt the past release of inflation with certain probability rather than the forward-looking newspaper forecast as suggested in Carroll [2003, Macroeconomic Expectations of Households and Professional Forecasters, Quarterly Journal of Economics, 118, 269-298]. The posterior model probabilities based on the Michigan survey data strongly support the proposed model. We also extend the agent-based epidemiology model by deriving for it a simple adaptation, which is suitable for estimation. Our results show that this model is able to capture the heterogeneity in households’ expe…

Why do university students choose tourism degrees? Interests analysis and employ-ment expectations for students from Universitat de València

2019

Interests that drive students to choose a Tourism degree will condition their behaviour in their studies and lat…

Deterministic Linkage as a Preceding Filter for Other Record Linkage Methods

2015

Deterministic record linkage (RL) is frequently regarded as a rival to more sophisticated strategies like probabilistic RL. We investigate the effect of combining deterministic linkage with other linkage techniques. For this task, we use a simple deterministic linkage strategy as a preceding filter: a data pair is classified as ‘match' if all values of attributes considered agree exactly, otherwise as ‘nonmatch'. This strategy is separately combined with two probabilistic RL methods based on the Fellegi–Sunter model and with two classification tree methods (CART and Bagging). An empirical comparison was conducted on two real data sets. We used four different partitions into training data a…

Accounting for haplotype phase uncertainty in linkage disequilibrium estimation

2007

The characterization of linkage disequilibrium (LD) is applied in a variety of studies including the identification of molecular determinants of the local recombination rate, the migration and population history of populations, and the role of positive selection in adaptation. LD suffers from the phase uncertainty of the haplotypes used in its calculation, which reflects limitations of the algorithms used for haplotype estimation. We introduce a LD calculation method, which deals with phase uncertainty by weighting all possible haplotype pairs according to their estimated probabilities as evaluated by PHASE. In contrast to the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm as implemented in the HA…

β-Thalassemia heterozygote state detrimentally affects health expectation.

2018

Background: Thalassemia minor (Tm) individuals, are generally considered healthy. However, the prognosis of Tm individuals has not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognosis of Tm versus controls without β-thalassemia carrier state. Methods: A total of 26,006 individuals seeking thalassemia screening at the AOOR Villa Sofia-V. Cervello, Palermo (Italy) were retrospectively studied. Logistic penalised regression model was used to estimate risk of potential complications and survival techniques were used to study mortality. Results: We identified a total of 4943 Tm and 21,063 controls. Tm was associated with significantly higher risks of hospitalisation for …
