A concept for personal wellness management based on activity monitoring
2008
Lifestyle related health problems are increasing rapidly. Many of them could be prevented or alleviated by sufficient physical activity, enough sleep, and a balanced diet. Individual citizens have the main responsibility for their own health and wellness management in their daily lives. Motivational tools based on modern technologies can support people in this task. Vivago Personal Wellness Manager (PWM) is a concept for personal wellness management, based on continuous activity monitoring with a wrist-worn device combined with immediate feedback on daily activity, e.g., sleep and physical activity. The concept allows long-term monitoring of activity patterns and includes PC software for de…
Determinants of individual tourist expenditure as a network: Empirical findings from Uruguay
2014
Abstract This paper introduces the use of graphical models for assessing the determinants of individual tourist spending. These models have the advantage of synthesizing and visualizing the relationships occurring within large sets of random variables, through an easy to interpret output. To this end, individual data from a large official survey of international tourists in Uruguay are used. Symmetric conditional independence structures are first investigated. Then subgraphs of each expenditure item's neighbourhood are extracted in order to assess the impact of main effects and interactions through proportional ordinal logistic regression. Results highlight the marginal role of socio-demogr…

Izglītības izdevumu un ekonomikas izaugsmes saistība Baltijas valstīs no 1998. līdz 2018.gadam
2022
CAN PUBLIC EDUCATION EXPENDITURE REDUCE THE SHADOW ECONOMY?
This paper empirically examines whether devoting more resources to education can reduce the size of the shadow economy on a cross-section of countries. The findings show a negative relationship between public education expenditure and the size of the shadow economy, which is robust to the inclusion of different proxies for the control variables, a large set of policy variables and regional differences. The findings also suggest that an increase in educational attainment can reduce the size of the shadow economy.
Expenditure on Education in the Czech Republic and Poland Compared to OECD Countries
2022
The education system, its quality and the resulting education of individuals is a constantly highly inflected term in each of the developed countries of the world. The measurement of educational outcomes is highly debatable in the long term, as there is no agreement on specific measurable criteria across the entire educational system, which in the developed countries of the world includes both private and publicly established educational institutions. The outputs and quality of the entire educational system usually become apparent only after a certain period (usually several years to decades) and is dependent on several factors. However, it cannot be done without enough financial resources,…
Causes of Public Expenditure Inefficiency and Proposals for Their Streamlining
2020
The public sector has continually developed, as new needs of the population have been identified and the expectations of the population regarding the quantity and the quality of the provided services have already been rising. Unlike private management, the public administration has not always been concerned with the way results have been achieved, but, particularly with the results themselves, and, as long as these have been satisfying for the population, the resources employed for obtaining the results were of no much concern. The public administration monopoly in the provision of some services has led to the possibility of generating imbalances between the quality of the provided services…
Sedentary Thresholds for Accelerometry-Based Mean Amplitude Deviation and Electromyography Amplitude in 7–11 Years Old Children
2019
We investigated the ability of energy expenditure, movement sensing, and muscle activity to discriminate sedentary and non-sedentary activities in children. Thirty-five 7–11-year-old children participated in the study. Simultaneous assessment of oxygen uptake (V̇O2), triaxial accelerometry, and thigh muscle electromyography (EMG) were performed during eight different sedentary and non-sedentary activities including lying down, sitting-, standing-, and walking-related activities, which were performed in a random order. Mean values of V̇O2, accelerometry, and EMG from the concurrent 2 min epochs during each activity were computed. Resting energy expenditure (REE) was measured during 30 min su…
