An Evaluation Matrix to Compare Computer Hydrological Models for Flood Predictions

2020

In order to predict and control the impacts of floods in torrents, it is important to verify the simulation accuracy of the most used hydrological models. The performance verification is particularly needed for applications in watersheds with peculiar climatic and geomorphological characteristics, such as the Mediterranean torrents. Moreover, in addition to the accuracy, other factors affect the choice of software by stakeholders (users, modellers, researchers, etc.). This study introduces a &ldquo

Building individual expertise in doctoral studies - the significance of everyday experiences and changing contexts

2015

High expectations for skiils are directed at doctors and doctoral students in the fast changing global time. Innovative soiutions to the genuine problems of society are expected of the new doctors. The expectations for skills that accumuIate through the evcryday experiences and difflrent contexts, and the requirements for experts in working life are experienced as partially conllicting by the doctoral students themselves. The expertise of doctoral students is individual — it forms in the long term in difkrent everyday contexts and is built from several individual elemenis. The experienccs and expertise of doctoral students forms diff’erentiy in diffirent contexts. The everyday experiences a…

The Acquisition of Professional Expertise—a challenge for educational research

1997

This article examines the acquisition of professional expertise from the educational viewpoint and outlines emerging approaches to research on expertise. The starting points are the need to reflect the nature and content of expertise in the changing world and the aim to understand the preconditions for integrating the viewpoints of working life and education in developing prerequisities for expertise in educational contexts. The section after the Introduction briefly reviews how expertise has been conceptualized in recent research. The next section deals with the role of higher education in developing expertise from the viewpoint of constructivist approaches in research on learning. Then cu…

Bridging Heritage and Tourist UX: A Socially-Driven Perspective

2016

The paper illustrates the potential of smart-phones as a medium of exchange of memories and experiences. Our application aims at providing diverse types of cultural user experience: to enable tourists to explore new places from a social-driven perceptive; to support new forms of connection and interaction between users and information (data exchange, contents sharing, feedback); to compose interactive narrative conveying the richness of information of interest to the user; to allow users to experience the narrative and underlying physical environment as a mixed-reality experience while allowing for deeper, context-specific exploration at any time through AR system.

Presenting the Past: A Framework for Facilitating the Externalization and Articulation of User Activities in Desktop Environment

2006

Work processes are conducted in various contexts and they involve different tasks, interruptions, activities and actions. In all of these, tacit knowledge plays a part. Some part of that tacit knowledge can be externalized and articulated by continuously monitoring the user’s activities. Because the desktop environment is an integral part of almost any office work context, we chart the demands the unstructured and discontinuous nature of work puts on the management of desktop working context. We discuss possibilities to augment the user’s awareness of his/her desktop working environment by providing a context-aware application that can act as a map-like resource for the user’s past activiti…

The role of age and emotional valence in word recognition: an ex-gaussian analysis

2015

How to measure the drinking experience of beer to drive new product development

2016

International audience; Consumers interact with products using three mental systems: affects, senses, and cognition. These systems give rise to“consumer experience”. Two studies were conducted to measure the experience of drinking craft and industrial beers. The firststudy consisted in an online survey with 75 consumers whose goal was to select phrases related to each system. A set of 18phrases was selected to perform the second study in which consumers had to drink industrial beers, rate liking and selectphrases that best described their experience of drinking in a CATA list. CATA phrases were related to the affective, sensory orcognitive systems. Beers were rated similar in liking, howeve…

Dynamic spatial abilities and learning from animation

2016

International audience; This paper presents part of a wider project to create, validate and apply a comprehensive dynamic spatial ability test suitable for use with learning from animation. Four types of test item were devised (two race tasks and two intercept tasks) and tested with forty undergraduate participants. Absolute and relative speed of the objects as well as trajectory directions were manipulated. Task performances and the effect of the manipulated factors are reported. Comparison with a conventional static spatial ability test revealed little correlation, suggesting that dynamic spatial ability can be regarded as a distinct capacity.

Transition of agriculture to agroecology-based systems: lessons from the French experience

2019

International audience; For more than one decade now, and partly as a response to European Commission directives, the French government is promoting a transition of agriculture to agroecology. Agroecology is here considered as a mode of agricultural production that is able to reconcile economic, environmental and social performances at the farm level. The national governmental plan ECOPHYTO is targeting a drastic decrease in the reliance on pesticides. This plan is one component of the ‘Agroecological project for France’ launched in year 2012, which is pointing out a systemic vision of technological changes. Even though these governmental initiatives were not successful in transforming the …
