Management performance of telework teams based on experimental methods

2009

This paper seeks to answer the following two questions: Which management factors have great effect on the management performance of telework teams? and How should management choose suitable team members for telework? The research will use experimental methods for exploring the novel topic of management performance of telework teams. The experimental design, implementation and result analysis will be done by using a computer experimental system we developed. The experimental research results show that an effective way of improving management performance of telework teams relates to the positive and the negative degrees of psychological factors, team factors, ethical factors and individual ba…

Biomedical implications of viral mutation and evolution

2012

Mutation rates vary hugely across viruses and strongly determine their evolution. In addition, viral mutation and evolution are biomedically relevant because they can determine pathogenesis, vaccine efficacy and antiviral resistance. We review experimental methods for estimating viral mutation rates and how these estimates vary across viral groups, paying special attention to the more general trends. Recent advances positing a direct association between viral mutation rates and virulence, or the use of high-fidelity variants as attenuated vaccines, are also discussed. Finally, we review the implications of viral mutation and evolution for the design of rational antiviral therapies and for e…

Neutron skin and centrality classification in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

2015

The concept of centrality in high-energy nuclear collisions has recently become a subject of an active debate. In particular, the experimental methods to determine the centrality that have given reasonable results for many observables in high-energy lead-lead collisions at the LHC have led to surprising behaviour in the case of proton-lead collisions. In this letter, we discuss the possibility to calibrate the experimental determination of centrality by asymmetries caused by mutually different spatial distributions of protons and neutrons inside the nuclei --- a well-known phenomenon in nuclear physics known as the neutron-skin effect.

Recent results on heavy-ion induced reactions of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay at INFN-LNS

2019

Abstract The NUMEN project aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). In this view measurements of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reaction cross sections are performed with high-accuracy. In particular, the (18O,18Ne) and (20Ne,20O) reactions are used as tools for β+β+ and β-β- decays, respectively. In the experiments, performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania, the beams are accelerated by the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) and the reaction ejectiles are detected the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. The measured cross sections are challe…

Predictive First-Principles Modeling of a Photosynthetic Antenna Protein: The Fenna–Matthews–Olson Complex

2020

High efficiency of light harvesting in photosynthetic pigment–protein complexes is governed by evolutionary-perfected protein-assisted tuning of individual pigment properties and interpigment interactions. Due to the large number of spectrally overlapping pigments in a typical photosynthetic complex, experimental methods often fail to unambiguously identify individual chromophore properties. Here, we report a first-principles-based modeling protocol capable of predicting properties of pigments in protein environment to a high precision. The technique was applied to successfully uncover electronic properties of the Fenna–Matthews–Olson (FMO) pigment–protein complex. Each of the three subunit…

Computertomographie der Atelektase

1987

After breathing pure oxygen, total atelectasis of one lung was produced in ten dogs; its development and regression was followed by CT and by conventional radiology. 30 seconds after cessation of ventilation, it was possible to show a rise in CT density of the atelectatic lung from -764 +/- 32 HU to -739 +/- 49 HU. The average time from the cessation of ventilation to total atelectasis averaged 5.5 +/- 1.1 minutes. The earliest sign on conventional radiographs was often seen after 30 seconds and usually after 60 seconds and consisted of mediastinal displacement. Extensive atelectasis regressed in only one out of six animals within one hour after resuming ventilation. The experimental method…

Inelastic Light Scattering Contribution to the Study of the Onset of Sintering of a Nanopowder

2017

International audience; The onset of the sintering of 5 nm ZrO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles is investigated by various methods including inelastic light scattering. A special attention is paid to low-frequency Raman spectra where scattering from confined acoustic vibrations and quasielastic scattering manifest. Significant changes are observed between samples sintered at different temperatures or applied forces. A detailed analysis of the spectra enables to follow the variation of the size of the nanoparticles, the surface area, and the formation of internanoparticles necks in the sintered materials. Finally, low-frequency scattering is shown to be more sensitive to the onset of sintering than m…

Strength distribution of elementary flax fibres

2005

Abstract Flax fibres, along with a number of other natural fibres, are being considered as an environmentally friendly alternative of synthetic fibres in fibre-reinforced polymer composites. A common feature of natural fibres is a much higher variability of mechanical properties. This necessitates study of the flax fibre strength distribution and efficient experimental methods for its determination. Elementary flax fibres of different gauge lengths are tested by single fibre tension in order to obtain the stress–strain response and strength and failure strain distributions. The applicability of single fibre fragmentation test for flax fibre failure strain and strength characterization is co…

The route to protein aggregate superstructures: Particulates and amyloid-like spherulites.

2015

AbstractDepending on external conditions, native proteins may change their structure and undergo different association routes leading to a large scale polymorphism of the aggregates. This feature has been widely observed but is not fully understood yet. This review focuses on morphologies, physico-chemical properties and mechanisms of formation of amyloid structures and protein superstructures. In particular, the main focus will be on protein particulates and amyloid-like spherulites, briefly summarizing possible experimental methods of analysis. Moreover, we will highlight the role of protein conformational changes and dominant forces in driving association together with their connection w…

Nuovo realismo e metodi di ricerca misti

2014
