Bending test for capturing the fractional visco-elastic parameters: theoretical and experimental investigation on giant reeds
2014
In this paper attention is devoted on searching a proper model for characterizing the behavior of giant reeds. To aim at this, firstly, meticulous experimental tests have been performed in the Laboratory of structural materials of University of Palermo. Further, the novel aspect of this paper is that of using an advanced Euler-Bernoulli model to fit experimental data of bending tests. Such a model of continuum beam takes into account different constitutive laws of visco-elasticity, being real materials visco-elastic.
Development of a high-accuracy PC-based wattmeter with commercial data acquisition boards
2011
This paper presents the development of a high accuracy sampling wattmeter, which makes use of two commercial data acquisition boards (DAQs) connected to a common personal computer. Commercial software is also used for data processing and implementation of the virtual instrument. The set up of the PC-based wattmeter is described and a preliminary evaluation of its metrological performances is made by means of two series of experimental tests, which were carried out with an electric power standard and a high performance multifunction calibrator. © 2011 IEEE.
A PC-based wattmeter for accurate measurements in sinusoidal and distorted conditions: Setup and experimental characterization
2012
This paper presents the development of a high-accuracy sampling wattmeter, which can be employed with both sinusoidal and distorted input signals. The proposed personal computer (PC)-based system is a simple, portable, and low-cost solution because it is based on two commercial data acquisition boards connected to a common PC. Owing to this solution, the voltage is sensed directly, avoiding expensive voltage dividers, while the current is sensed by means of a noninductive current shunt. Commercial software is also used for data processing and implementation of the virtual instrument. The setup of the PC-based wattmeter is described, with a detailed description of the correction strategy of …
Smartphone-based bridge monitoring through vehicle-bridge interaction: analysis and experimental assessment
2022
AbstractIn this study, the results of a vast experimental campaign on the applicability of a smartphone-based technique for bridge monitoring are presented. Specifically, the vehicle–bridge interaction (VBI)-based approach is exploited as a cost-effective means to estimate the natural frequencies of bridges, with the final aim of possibly developing low-cost and diffused infrastructure monitoring system. The analysis is performed using a common hybrid vehicle, fully equipped with classical piezoelectric accelerometers and a smartphone MEMS accelerometer, to record its vertical accelerations while passing over the bridge. In this regard, the experimental campaign is carried out considering t…
Flush-Crash Experiments in Drosophila
1989
In 1968, Hampton Carson (1968) proposed the founder-flush-crash model, a new model of speciation, which readily lends itself to experimental testing in the laboratory (Carson 1971).
EFFICACY OF PBO-FRCM STRENGTHENING OF RC COLUMNS IN MRFS
2019
Innovative materials and techniques are widespread used for the strengthening and rehabilita-tion of existing structures. Recent researches have been developed on new fiber reinforced composites in which epoxy resin is replaced by inorganic cementitious material. These kind of cement-based composite material is known as Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrices (FRCM) recently used also in combination with synthetic polymeric fibers named PBO. The efficiency of this new confining system has been demonstrated by a large number of com-pression tests on concrete specimens while there are only few experimental researches on the behaviour of large scale specimens under external action able to simul…
R.C. columns strengthened by PBO-FRCM under axial force and bending moment
2017
Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) systems, also known as Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) are nowadays widely used as confining material to enhance both strength and deformation capacity of columns of seismic resistant r.c. frames. In the past, when carbon fiber was used in the textile, experimental results showed that the efficiency of the wrapping is limited by the connection between substrate and fiber, which is not as effective as when epoxy resins are used. To improve the strength of the connection between fibres and mortar binder in FRCM system, the use of p-Phenylene BenzobisOxazole (PBO), having a molecular structure capable of establishing chemical bonds with hydrated c…
An experimental and constitutive investigation on the chemo-mechanical behaviour of a clay
2013
Engineering issues for which the understanding of the chemo-mechanical behaviour of soils is relevant include wellbore stability problems, the salinification of groundwater, and nuclear waste storage. However, despite the vast number of situations in which couplings between chemistry and mechanics occur, the available constitutive models rely on limited experimental evidence. This paper presents the results of an experimental programme on the chemo-mechanical behaviour of a non-swelling illite. The osmotic suction is controlled through the ion concentration of sodium chloride in the pore water. Stress paths include mechanical loading at a constant osmotic suction, and an increasing osmotic …
Structural performances of pultruded GFRP emergency structures – Part 1: Experimental characterization of materials and substructure
2019
Abstract This paper presents an experimental study in the field of structures made of pultruded fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) elements to be used for emergency purposes. A preliminary design of a 3D pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer structure is presented with the mechanical characterization of the constituting elements. The axial and flexural properties of laminate and I-shaped GRFP profiles are discussed considering the short term creep. In a companion paper, the benefits, the limits and the reliability of the structure analyzed for emergency applications are discussed. In details, the numerical structural analysis of the full-scale 3D model is described followed by the experimen…
Constitutive Numerical Model of FRCM Strips Under Traction
2020
In this paper, the tensile behavior of Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) strips is investigated through Finite Element (FE) models. The most adopted numerical modeling approaches for the simulation of the fiber-matrix interface law are described. Among them, the cohesive model is then used for the generation of FE models which are able to simulate the response under traction of FRCM strips tested in laboratory whose results are available in the technical literature. Tests on basalt, PBO and carbon coated FRCM specimens are taken into account also considering different mechanical ratios of the textile reinforcement. The comparison between FE results and experimental data allows val…
