Familial hypercholesterolæmia in children and adolescents: Gaining decades of life by optimizing detection and treatment
2015
Contains fulltext : 155263.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a common genetic cause of premature coronary heart disease (CHD). Globally, one baby is born with FH every minute. If diagnosed and treated early in childhood, individuals with FH can have normal life expectancy. This consensus paper aims to improve awareness of the need for early detection and management of FH children. Familial hypercholesterolaemia is diagnosed either on phenotypic criteria, i.e. an elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level plus a family history of elevated LDL-C, premature coronary artery disease and/or genetic diagnosis, or positive genetic testin…
The Role of the Country of Origin Expert in Judicial Proceedings
2021
The country of origin expert is gradually becoming a central figure in legal procedures, particularly for what concerns the assessment of cases of international protection. Judges, lawyers, and legal practitioners in general increasingly recognise the relevance of this figure, and in their pronouncements, judges frequently rely on specialized information provided by these experts, so as to shed light on particular aspects of the country of origin of those who apply for asylum. The logic that underlies this recent development is as intuitive as it is revealing, for it entails the notion that first-hand experience and acquired knowledge of the legal, social, religious and political facets of …

Neutral experts or passionate participants? Renegotiating expertise and the right to act in Finnish participatory social policy
2018
This article examines a case of participatory social policy in which former beneficiaries were invited as ‘experts-by-experience’ into Finnish social welfare organisations. It combines a governmentality perspective with the analytical tools of the sociology of engagements to explore as what the projects’ participants are engaged, and how the differing demands made on their ways of being are made to appear as legitimate. The article shows how different definitions of expertise are used to steer the participants’ forms of engagement, and how these definitions appear valid only within a specific frame of justifying civic participation. It concludes that the participants’ expertise is defined i…
A synthesis regarding the application of Expert Systems in Inventory management
2015
The paper surveys the application of Expert Systems in Inventory field in order to find out the relevant aspects needed to build an improved system. The result is a hybrid Expert System-Decision Support System that helps managers to face the uncertainty, complexity and the dynamics of the Inventory Management as the Heart of the Supply Chain Management.
A Fuzzy Inference Expert System to Support the Decision of Deploying a Military Naval Unit to a Mission
2009
Naval military units are complex systems required to operate in fixed time frames in offshore tasks where maintenance operations are drastically limited. A failure during a mission is a critical event that can drastically influence the mission success. The decision of switching a unit to a mission hence requires complex judgments involving information about the health status of machineries and the environmental conditions. The present procedure aims to support the decision about switching a unit to a mission considering the vagueness and uncertainty of information by means of fuzzy theory and emulates the decision process of a human expert by means of a rule-based inference engine. A numeri…
Probabilistic Logic under Coherence, Model-Theoretic Probabilistic Logic, and Default Reasoning
2001
We study probabilistic logic under the viewpoint of the coherence principle of de Finetti. In detail, we explore the relationship between coherence-based and model-theoretic probabilistic logic. Interestingly, we show that the notions of g-coherence and of g-coherent entailment can be expressed by combining notions in model-theoretic probabilistic logic with concepts from default reasoning. Crucially, we even show that probabilistic reasoning under coherence is a probabilistic generalization of default reasoning in system P. That is, we provide a new probabilistic semantics for system P, which is neither based on infinitesimal probabilities nor on atomic-bound (or also big-stepped) probabil…
