Expertise-by-Experience in Child and Family Services : Professionals' Perspectives on Experiential Knowledge

This study analyses child and family service professionals' perceptions of expertise-by-experience. Group and individual interviews with professionals were analysed. The analysis yielded three main dimensions of experiential knowledge: supportive peer knowledge; contested knowledge, in which education and talking among peers in small groups helps experts-by-experience to locate the limits of their knowledge before publicly disclosing their inner thoughts; and emotional knowledge, which is based on shared experiences of emotional challenges and vulnerability. Relational expertise among Finnish educators working in extended hours ECEC

This study examined discourses and positions produced by educators (n = 31) on the topics of teamwork and professional expertise in extended hours early childhood education and care (ECEC). Theoretically, we follow the ideas of relational expertise and common knowledge. Previous research provides that relational expertise and creating common knowledge are useful in ECEC contexts, especially in teamwork. The data were collected by interviewing educators, and discursive psychology was applied in the analysis of the data. As results, we found two discursive tensions. Les Sciences de l’Information et de la Communication constituent un terrain d’observation privilégié du débat épistémologique opposant la recherche dite fondamentale à la recherche dite appliquée. Cette opposition produit systématiquement un déclassement qualitatif de la seconde au profit de la première. Nous souhaitons ici discuter de la pertinence même du débat ainsi que de ce déclassement qui en est la conséquence. La question est alors double : nos travaux s’inscrivent-il dans la recherche dite « appliquée » ?
