Creating Attractive Places for Whom? A Discourse-Theoretical Approach to Knowledge and Planning

2013

We aim to find a way to produce knowledge of attractiveness of place that is representative of the variety and complexity of what attractiveness entails and the same time productive for place development and planning. On the basis of a study of an INTERREG IV A-project in Norway, we question how and by whom the discourse regarding what is attractive about places is constructed and how the implicit or explicit knowledge is treated in local planning. We find that planning must produce knowledge in which the different narratives about place confront each other, and highlight differences and mutual debate between adversaries. We conclude by arguing the case for applying a model of agonistic plu…

Methods for studying unconscious learning

2005

One has to face numerous difficulties when trying to establish a dissociation between conscious and unconscious knowledge. In this paper, we review several of these problems as well as the different methodological solutions that have been proposed to address them. We suggest that each of the different methodological solutions offered refers to a different operational definition of consciousness, and present empirical examples of sequence learning studies in which these different procedures were applied to differentiate between implicit and explicit knowledge acquisition. We also show how the use of a sensitive behavioral method, the process dissociation procedure, confers a distinctive adva…

Introducing implicit learning: from the laboratory to the real life

2010

The dissociation between implicit and explicit cognition has a long history in psychology. As early as 1920, Clark Hull (25) investigated the learning of Chinese ideographs and identified the process of concept formation by abstraction of common elements, a process that occurs without explicit knowledge from the subjects of these regularities. Perceptual learning is another example of those processes that take place largely in the absence of awareness of the rules that govern the stimulations of the environment. Helmholtz (24) was one of the first to refer to implicit inference made by the perceptual system and to perceptual learning. Some years later, the distinction between implicit and e…

Concentrated Solar Power: Ontologies for Solar Radiation Modeling and Forecasting

2014

This chapter considers the possibility of formally representing implicit and explicit knowledge of solar radiation modeling and forecasting by means of ontologies, with particular reference to the implications of concentrated solar power. The various applications discussed in the literature include various methods, such as spectral, parametric and empirical models, artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic approaches, as well as satellite and ground based imaging techniques. We want to use the principles of semantic technologies and formal ontologies, to represent knowledge in solar radiation models. The purpose is to capture the semantics of information and realize a system for sharing an…

The emergence of explicit knowledge during the early phase of learning in sequential reaction time tasks

1997

Five experiments investigated the formation of explicit knowledge of a repeating sequence in a sequential reaction time task. Reliable explicit knowledge was obtained even though various conditions prevented the selective improvement of RTs (Exps. 1–4). This knowledge emerged early during training. Participants were able to recognize segments of the sequence (Exps. 3 and 4) or correctly assess the probabilities of transition of the target between successive locations (Exp. 5) after only two blocks of training trials. These findings rule out an interpretation of sequence learning that posits that explicit knowledge emerges from implicit knowledge during the course of training. Although these…

The effect of explicit knowledge on sequence learning: A graded account

2004

In this paper, we study the effect of conscious knowledge on implicit sequence learning. To do so, in three sequence learning experiments, we manipulated (1) the extent to which instructions were intentional vs. incidental - intentional participants were informed of the existence of sequential regularities, and (2) the amount of explicit knowledge given to participants about the stimulus material. Results indicated that explicit knowledge improves sequence learning, as indexed by an increase in reaction times when the training sequence is unexpectedly replaced by another one. To enable us to differentiate between implicit and explicit learning, we applied the process dissociation procedure …

Agility and system documentation in large-scale enterprise system projects: a knowledge management perspective

2021

Abstract The growth of the agile approach usage comes with a deemphasis on formal documentation (explicit knowledge) and an increased reliance on personal interactions (tacit knowledge) for knowledge transfer. However, the sharing of tacit knowledge poses challenges. The agile approach is prone to knowledge hoarding, as well as knowledge loss from employee turnover and reassignment during periods of significant organizational changes. This study proposes a model that frames documentation and personal interactions as co-agents of system knowledge transfer. We report the preliminary confirmation of crucial antecedents along the dimensions of codification and personalization strategies to supp…

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT METHODS AS AN INNOVATIVE DEVELOPMENT FACTOR IN THE KNOWLEDGE TRIANGLE

2013

The purpose of the study is to determine the knowledge management methods that can be used in practice and be an innovative development factor in the knowledge triangle. For the achievement of this purpose the following tasks were accomplished. Tasks. In the course of a questionnaire survey the basic needs of the learners that cannot be met through usual education were revealed, training programmes were developed; said programmes were implemented on the base of the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE, Riga), Rezekne Higher School (Latvia), and Moscow State University (Russia). The results of training were obtained, processed and analysed. The primary methods were used including a brief descr…

Adjoint-based sampling methods for electromagnetic scattering

2010

In this paper we investigate the efficient realization of sampling methods based on solutions of certain adjoint problems. This adjoint approach does not require the explicit knowledge of the Green's function for the background medium, and allows us to sample for all points and all dipole directions simultaneously; thus, several limitations of standard sampling methods are relieved. A detailed derivation of the adjoint approach is presented for two electromagnetic model problems, but the framework can be applied to a much wider class of problems. We also discuss a relation of the adjoint sampling method to standard backprojection algorithms, and present numerical tests that illustrate the e…
