Volcanic plume and bomb field masses from thermal infrared camera imagery

International audience; Masses erupted during normal explosions at Stromboli volcano (Italy) are notoriously difficult to measure. We present a method that uses thermal infrared video for cooling bomb fields to obtain the total power emitted by all hot particles emitted during an explosion. A given mass of magma (M) will emit a finite amount of thermal power, defined by M cp(Te−T0), cp and Te being magma specific heat capacity and temperature, and T0 being ambient temperature. We use this relation to convert the total power emitted by the bomb field to the mass required to generate that power. Utilization of lignin powder for manufacturing self-binding HDF

Abstract The preparation of self-binding lignocellulosic fibreboards has been investigated. Different high-density fibreboards (HDF) were hot-pressed based on a mixture of grey alder (Alnus incana L. Abstract Background Biogas production from lignocellulosic biomass is generally considered to be challenging due to the recalcitrant nature of this biomass. In this study, the recalcitrance of birch was reduced by applying steam-explosion (SE) pretreatment (210 °C and 10 min). Moreover, bioaugmentation with the cellulolytic bacterium Caldicellulosiruptor bescii was applied to possibly enhance the methane production from steam-exploded birch in an anaerobic digestion (AD) process under thermophilic conditions (62 °C). A first search for coincident gravitational waves and high energy neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007

A search for high-energy neutrinos coming from the direction of the Sun has been performed using the data recorded by the ANTARES neutrino telescope during 2007 and 2008. The neutrino selection criteria have been chosen to maximize the selection of possible signals produced by the self-annihilation of weakly interacting massive particles accumulated in the centre of the Sun with respect to the atmospheric background. As described in Chaps. 3 and 4, the advent of oxygenic photosynthesis triggered worldwide environmental changes. A world that had been reductive passed over into a state in which free dioxygen was available in the oceans and the atmosphere. We have already described the likely catastrophic effects on an anaerobic biota, but the changes were much broader than that. Dioxygen in the seas led to major changes in seawater chemistry. Iron, which had previously been soluble as ferrous salts, was precipitated in the ferric form. Copper, which had been insoluble in the anaerobic ocean as cuprous sulphide (Cu+-state), now became moderately soluble in the cupric form (Cu++-state).
