Association between passive tobacco exposure and caries in children and adolescents. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2017

To examine the available evidence on the association between exposure to tobacco use in the womb and in infancy and the presence of caries in primary and permanent dentition in children and adolescents. A systematic review was conducted through searches in 4 data bases (Pubmed, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science), complemented by hand-searching. Of the 559 articles identified, 400 were duplicates. Finally, 28 articles were included in the qualitative review and 21 in the meta-analysis. Their quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The quality was medium in 44% of the articles included and high in 56%. The overall meta-analysis gave a significant odds ratio (OR = 1.53, 95% conf…

Justicia transicional: conceptos clave y aspectos normativos

2018

This paper is an exposition about the key concepts of transitional justice. We will introduce briefly its four basic measures (penal responsibility, truth seeking, victim reparations and nonrepetition guarantees). After that, we will analyse some of the normative aspects and dilemmas that these measures involve. These questions include: opposite exigencies (for example, between truth and justice); problems related with the application of universal abstract norms to particular contexts; the complex balance between truth, memory and reconciliation; a disquisition about the concept of victim and the concept of perpetrator; and a reflection concerning the future of transitional justice.

Predicting soil loss in central and south Italy with a single USLE-MM model

2018

Purpose: The USLE-MM estimates event normalized plot soil loss, Ae,N, by an erosivity term given by the runoff coefficient, QR, times the single-storm erosion index, EI30, raised to an exponent b1> 1. This modeling scheme is based on an expected power relationship, with an exponent greater than one, between event sediment concentration, Ce, and the EI30/Pe(Pe= rainfall depth) term. In this investigation, carried out at the three experimental sites of Bagnara, Masse, and Sparacia, in Italy; the soundness of the USLE-MM scheme was tested. Materials and methods: A total of 1192 (Ae,N, QREI30) data pairs were used to parameterize the model both locally and considering all sites simultaneously. …

Determining noise and vibration exposure in conifer cross-cutting operations by using Li-Ion batteries and electric chainsaws

2018

In many activities, chainsaw users are exposed to the risk of injuries and several other hazard factors that may cause health problems. In fact, environmental and working conditions when using chainsaws result in workers&rsquo

Bayesian Inference for the Exponential Power Function Parameters

2008

This paper addresses the problem of obtaining the marginal posterior distributions, via Gibbs Sampler, for the parameters of the well-known generalized error distribution called Exponential Power Function (E.P.F.). This density represents a family of unimodal symmetric distributions with shapes varying from leptokurtic to platikurtic.

A bending theory of thermoelastic diffusion plates based on Green-Naghdi theory

2017

Abstract This article is concerned with bending plate theory for thermoelastic diffusion materials under Green-Naghdi theory. First, we present the basic equations which characterize the bending of thin thermoelastic diffusion plates for type II and III models. The theory allows for the effect of transverse shear deformation without any shear correction factor, and permits the propagation of waves at a finite speed without energy dissipation for type II model and with energy dissipation for type III model. By the semigroup theory of linear operators, we prove the well-posedness of the both models and the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of type III model. For unbounded plate of type III…

Critical behavior of a colloid-polymer mixture confined between walls

2006

We investigate the influence of confinement on phase separation in colloid-polymer mixtures. To describe the particle interactions, the colloid-polymer model of Asakura and Oosawa [J. Chem. Phys. 22, 1255 (1954)] is used. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations are then applied to this model confined between two parallel hard walls, separated by a distance D=5 colloid diameters. We focus on the critical regime of the phase separation and look for signs of crossover from three-dimensional (3D) Ising to two-dimensional (2D) Ising universality. To extract the critical behavior, finite size scaling techniques are used, including the recently proposed algorithm of Kim et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91…
