Environment and Endometriosis: A toxic relationship
2015
Endometriosis is a common, be- nign, estrogen-dependent gynecological dis- ease that represents one of the main causes of hospitalization in industrialized countries. It is well established that a large amount of natural and man-made chemicals are present in the en- vironment and both humans and animals are exposed to them. Dioxin and dioxin-like com- pounds have long biological half-life, can accu- mulate within the organism and could negative- ly affect several physiological processes. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the possible relationship between these chemicals and the pathogenesis of en- dometriosis.
Characterization of the Magnetic Induction Field produced by Secondary Substations
2014
The aim of this paper is to develop a methodology for measuring the magnetic field distribution around the prefabricated secondary substations in vibrated reinforced concrete, as well as the definition of a methodology to determining the maximum value of magnetic induction produced by the substations in correspondence to nominal current of the transformer. As proposed has been developed in conformity with laws and standards and can be applied to active and passive secondary substations. The experimental validation of the proposed methodology, carried out by a measurements campaign whose results are reported, confirms the validity and returns a versatile and simple tool for the verification …

Dietary exposure to mycotoxins through the consumption of commercial bread loaf in Valencia, Spain
2017
Abstract In this study, 80 commercial samples of bread loaves were purchased from different supermarkets located in Valencia (Spain). These samples were investigated for the presence of legislated and non-legislated mycotoxins. Results showed that samples were contaminated with Aflatoxins (AFs), Zearalenone (ZEA) and Enniatins (ENs) with a frequency of 20, 96, and 65% respectively. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), Aflatoxin B2 (AFB2) and Aflatoxin G1 (AFG1) were detected with concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 7.1 μg/kg. The samples contaminated with AFB1 showed values exceeding the maximum limit allowed in the EU. The sum of AFs also exceeded the maximum limit allowed in 6 samples. ENs contamination da…
The spatial distribution of population exposure to outdoor air pollution in Valencia (Spain) and its association with a privation index
2013
The relationship between 2D:4D ratio and systemizing and empathy quotients in parents of people with autism spectrum disorders
2011
IntroductionInterdigital 2D:4D ratio has been considered as an indicator of prenatal exposure to androgens, entailing then a smaller ratio more androgenisation. Although it has been related to systemizing and empathy dimensions in the general population, it has never been studied in parents of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs).Objectives and aimsTo analyse the relationship between the 2D:4D ratio and these psychological variables in this population.MethodsThe sample was composed by parents of both genders of people with (n = 46) or without (n = 42) ASDs. The ratio was calculated as the mean of 3 measurements of each hand evaluated by 3 different researchers. Psychological dimensi…
<title>Refractive properties of separate erythrocytes of Chernobyl clean-up workers at different pH</title>
2000
This study is focused on the modifications in erythrocytes of Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident clean-up workers as a late health effect of short-term impact of high level radioactive contamination. As a result, a new method based on erythrocyte (RBC) refractive index properties at different pH has been elaborated. According to the light dispersion theory for fluids refractive index is associated with molecules mass m. This feature is widely used for estimation of cell dry mass. But there is another refractive index dependency from molecules charge q regardless of its sing. This feature is not being used for cell quantitative and qualitative characterization. In this study, RBC were in…
P046 Occupational exposures and gastric cancer risk in the MCC-spain case-control study
2016
Objective To explore the relationship between gastric cancer (GC) and occupational exposures. Methods A total of 382 incident GC cases and 2,846 randomly selected population controls with occupational information were included from the MCC-Spain study, a population-based multicase-control study. Occupation was coded according to the Spanish National Classification of Occupations 1994. Occupational exposures were assessed by the MatEmEsp Job Exposure Matrix. ORs and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated by unconditional logistic regression adjusting for matching variables and education. Results In men, a statistically significant increased risk of GC, was found for ‘Employed ski…

BACKGROUND: While noise annoyance has become recognized as an important environmental stressor, its association to mental health has hardly been studied. We therefore determined the association of noise annoyance to anxiety and depression and explored the contribution of diverse environmental sources to overall noise annoyance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated cross-sectional data of n = 15.010 participants of the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS), a population-based, prospective, single-center cohort study in Mid-Germany (age 35 to 74 years). Noise annoyance was assessed separately for road traffic, aircraft, railways, industrial, neighborhood indoor and outdoor noise ("during the day"; "i…
Multiple pregnancies and environmental exposure: An impact of air pollution on fetal growth?
2018
Introduction Multiple pregnancies display all the complications of singletons, but in highest frequencies, especially for fetal growth abnormalities. In singletons, air pollution seems to be negatively associated with fetal growth. A similar relationship in multiple pregnancies can be expected. However, multiple pregnancies are systematically excluded from the studies of the impact of air pollution on pregnancy outcomes. This study aims to analyze in a population of multiple pregnancies the relationship between fetal growth restriction (FGR), small for gestational age (SGA) and environmental chronic exposure to air pollution in moderately polluted cities. Methods All the multiple pregnancie…
