Introduction: miRNAs are noncoding RNAs that target specific mRNA with subsequent regulation of particular genes, implicated in various biological processes. In cancer, miRNAs could show a different expression from normal tissues. miRNAs have a role as oncogenes when they target tumor suppressor genes and similarly they are tumor suppressors when they target oncogenes. Whereas Asiatic lions obviously have the same level of brain size as leopards (Panthera pardus), African lions have higher brain capacities. A third level seems to be represented by the upper pleistocene American lion,Panthera leo atrox. The eighth component of human complement (C8) is composed of two subunits which are products from three separate genes. The alpha-gamma- and the beta-subunit of C8 are expressed independently, and are part of the membrane attack complex. C8 is primarily synthesized in the liver. It has been shown in previous studies that the human hepatoma cell line HepG2 constitutively expresses C8, and thus is a suitable model system for studying C8 biosynthesis in vitro. In mammals, the liver is the major organ of fatty acid catabolism. This pathway is involved in both mitochondria and peroxisome. While mitochondria breaks down fatty acids with short, medium and long carbon chains, peroxisomes are involved in the catabolism of very long and branched chain fatty acids, which are degraded by three enzymes: acyl-CoA oxidase, multifunctional enzyme and thiolase enzyme. The treatment of rats with ciprofibrate, a potent peroxisome proliferator, led to increased levels of the peroxisomal acyl-CoA oxidase (ACO) mRNA. How ciprofibrate functions to elevate ACO mRNA is not known. To help determine the mechanism of ciprofibrate action, in vitro transcription assays were performed. It was determined that ciprofibrate was responsible for a 3.5-fold stimulation of the rate of ACO transcription within 24 hr of ingestion. It was also observed that the transcription rate stimulation following a 2-week ciprofibrate treatment of Wistar rats was maintained following 4 weeks of ciprofibrate withdrawal. Leflunomide is a novel immunomodulatory drug shown to be very effective in animal models of autoimmune diseases and transplantation rejection, as well as in human rheumatoid arthritis. Leflunomide's main metabolite, A77 1726, has been shown to be reversibly antiproliferativein vitro. Pursuing this, we performed cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry of a B-cell lymphoma line and found that at concentrations >2.5 μM cells accumulated in the early S-phase. The therapeutic use of the antifungal drug amphotericin B (AmB) is limited due to severe side effects like glomerular vasoconstriction and risk of renal failure during AmB administration. As nitric oxide (NO) has substantial functions in renal autoregulation, we have determined the effects of AmB on endothelial constitutive NO synthase (ecNOS) expression and activity in human and rat endothelial cell cultures. AmB used at concentrations of 0.6 to 1.25 μg ml−1 led to increases in ecNOS mRNA and protein expression as well as NO production. This was the result of an increased ecNOS mRNA half-life. Since Aristotle, philosophers have found themselves in paradoxical questioning about the nature of time. Indeed, a major obstacle found its clearest expression in Augustine’s famous dictum: “If you ask me what time is, then I do not know anything about it any more.” So, one would say with him that the whole task is to translate the experience of time into discourse, even if it has been set out as “simply” descriptive. Phenotypic heterogeneity in bacterial cell populations allows genetically identical organisms to different behavior under similar environmental conditions. The Gram-negative bacterium Photorhabdus luminescens is an excellent organism to study phenotypic heterogeneity since their life cycle involves a symbiotic interaction with soil nematodes as well as a pathogenic association with insect larvae. En el artículo se analizan los pasajes más relevantes donde Wittgenstein emplea la expresión‘forma de vida’ (Lebensform), estableciendo conexiones entre sus diferentes sentidos. Acontinuación se exponen dos interpretaciones de esta noción –la orgánica y la cultural–, quealgunos autores consideran excluyentes entre sí, y se discute críticamente la unilateralidadde ambas interpretaciones y su status teórico. Finalmente, se propone una interpretaciónque permite compatibilizar trascendentalismo y naturalismo, habida cuenta de la funciónmetodológica que Wittgenstein atribuyó a la noción de ‘forma de vida’ en su análisisconceptual de las condiciones de la comprensión del lenguaje.
