Detecting significant features in modeling microRNA-target interactions

2017

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules mediating the translational repression and degradation of target mRNAs in the cell. Mature miRNAs are used as a template by the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to recognize the complementary mRNAs to be regulated. Up to 60% of human genes are putative targets of one or more miRNAs. Several prediction tools are available to suggest putative miRNA targets, however, only a small part of the interaction pairs has been validated by experimental approaches. The analysis of the expression profile of the RNA fraction immunoprecipitated (IP) with the RISC proteins is an established method to detect which genes are actually regulated by the R…

Metilazione del DNA in artrite reumatoide

2005

Settore BIO/18 - Geneticainstead chromosomes of controls were almost uniformly decorated by brilliant grains. Studies on methylation of PTHrP gene promoter 2 performed on five CpG island internal sites using the Methylation-Sensitive Restriction Endonuclease Multiplex (MSREM)-PCR showed that one of the sites nearest the trascription starting point is heavy methylated in a significantly high number of RA patients. Thus RA seems to be characterized by genomewide hypomethylation associated with local hypermethylation like the most part of tumors. This result raises the possibility that susceptibility to lymphomas is related to abnormal DNA methylation levels and suggests the opportunity to evaluate the DNA methylation status in RA patientin fact the demethylating therapies together with diet and life style can act towards an increase of tumor risk. Future studies using a larger number of subjects could confirm these findings.Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic multisystem inflammatory disease characterized by high recurrence of lymphomas as well as hypercalcemia due to PTHrP overexpression. Because of DNA methylation plays a critical role in development of neoplasias we determined in RA patients the global DNA methylation status and local methylation pattern of the CpG island of one of the three promoters of PTHrP gene utilizing molecular and cytogenetic techniques. Investigations performed on DNA from peripheral blood of patients and donors amplified by Methylation-Sensitive Arbitrarily Primed (MeS-AP)-PCR indicated that RA is strongly associated with global DNA hypomethylation. Similarly chromosomal DNA methylation pattern analysis by indirect immunofluorescence technique with anti 5-methylcitosine antibody showed all peripheral lymphocyte metaphases from RA patients with chromosomes weakly fluorescent without discrete grain

The interpretation of prehistoric visual expression in indoor museums

2011

Representing Prehistory in museums, with all the contradictions that the term “representation” may imply, is always very controversial from the interpretative point of view, implicating a series of different philosophical and scientific positions, both on Prehistory itself, and on the way of introducing it to the public, particularly today with the resurfacing of the need to dedicate some attention also to the social and the so-called “immaterial” contexts, to the myths, the rites, the cults, to the interpretation of life and nature, overcoming the obsolete concept of the museums exposing manufactured articles. In the long decontestualization process of the objects involving, unfortunately,…

Discriminating Graph Pattern Miningfrom Gene Expression Data

2016

We consider the problem of mining gene expression data in order to single out interesting features characterizing healthy/unhealthy samples of an input dataset. We present an approach based on a network model of the input gene expression data, where there is a labelled graph for each sample. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to build a different graph for each sample and, then, to have a database of graphs for representing a sample set. Our main goal is that of singling out interesting differences between healthy and unhealthy samples, through the extraction of "discriminative patterns" among graphs belonging to the two different sample sets. Differently from the other…

Face Expression Recognition through Broken Symmetries

2008

Security systems, criminology, physical access control and man-machine interactions are examples of applications where recognition of human faces may be crucial. In the present paper a new signature, based on a measure of axial symmetry called DST, is proposed as a significant feature to analyze facial expressions. The measure of symmetry is an elaborate difference between the internal and external symmetry kernels of an object. The idea here is to use the evolution of the symmetry measure of a face over an ordered set of its sub-images. We claim that different evolutionary trends will represent different face expressions. The proposed signature has been tested on several face databases (ps…

Can you feel it will you tell me. Encouraging sentiment expression on the web

2015

In a recent trend in web communication, news outlets and blog platforms allow readers to express opinions about what they have read by choosing an associated feeling, or sentiment ex- pression. This emerging trend, fitting between liking and full text comments, has not still found the popularity it should. The thesis of this paper is that this is also due to the way the sen- timent choice is presented to the user. In order to test this hy- pothesis we have devised a pilot experiment; results confirm that a simpler way of choice increases sentiment expression and yields result that are more aligned with ground truth.

Optimization of a thermomagnetic motor

2015

In this paper, an approach towards the optimization of the Curie motor is presented. The approach is based on a thermal-magnetic coupled dynamic model of the motor, which is obtained by assuming the use of a ferromagnetic material working at temperatures near the Curie point. An analytical expression of the generated torque, which links this quantity to the magnetic, thermal, and geometrical parameters of the generated torque, is given. The expressions of speed and torque are derived and related to the thermal properties of the machine and are used as optimization indexes in an optimization procedure. The aim of the optimization process is to obtain a machine able to rotate constantly at th…

Identification of Key miRNAs in Regulation of PPI Networks

2020

In this paper, we explore the interaction between miRNA and deregulated proteins in some pathologies. Assuming that miRNA can influence mRNA and consequently the proteins regulation, we explore this connection by using an interaction matrix derived from miRNA-target data and PPI network interactions. From this interaction matrix and the set of deregulated proteins, we search for the miRNA subset that influences the deregulated proteins with a minimum impact on the not deregulated ones. This regulation problem can be formulated as a complex optimization problem. In this paper, we have tried to solve it by using the Genetic Algorithm Heuristic. As the main result, we have found a set of miRNA…
