Discrepancies between Mothers' and Fathers' Perceptions of Sons' and Daughters' Problem Behaviour: A Longitudinal Analysis of Parent‐Adolescent Agree…

1998

One hundred and ninety-eight adolescents and their mothers (N = 189) and fathers (N = 136) participated in a 4-year longitudinal study. Adolescent problem behaviour was assessed by the Youth Self-Report (YSR) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). In addition, parental stress and marital adjustment were determined. Results showed that mothers and fathers showed high agreement, especially about their daughters, whereas parents and adolescents showed little agreement. Agreement was higher for internalising than for externalising behaviours. In general, adolescents reported more symptomatology than their parents did. However, mothers' ratings of their children's behaviours were significantly…

Drinking, smoking, and educational achievement: Cross-lagged associations from adolescence to adulthood

2014

Background Adolescent substance use is associated with lower educational achievement but the directionality of the association remains uncertain. We analyzed data on drinking, smoking and educational achievement to study the associations between substance use and education from early adolescence to young adulthood. Methods Longitudinal data from four time points (ages 12, 14, 17, and 19–27 years) from a population-based cohort study of Finnish twin individuals were used to estimate bivariate cross-lagged path models for substance use and educational achievement, adjusting for sex, parental covariates, and adolescent externalizing behavior. A total of 4761 individuals (49.4% females) were in…

Determining the Set of Concept Map Based Tasks for Computerized Knowledge Self-Assessment

2012

Demands for educated labor force with well-integrated cognitive structures call for necessity to use in educational institutions appropriate teaching and knowledge assessment methods directed towards fine development and assessment of students’ conceptual understanding. Concept maps as a kind of mental models have great potential in knowledge assessment due to several significant advantages. However, a taxonomy of possible concept mapping tasks has not been developed yet. The paper considers the problem of extending a set of concept mapping tasks in the already developed concept map based knowledge assessment system. The possible types of tasks are investigated from the point of view of the…

The Role of Parenting Styles in Children's Problem Behavior

2005

This study investigated the combination of mothers' and fathers' parenting styles (affection, behavioral control, and psychological control) that would be most influential in predicting their children's internal and external problem behaviors. A total of 196 children (aged 5-6 years) were followed up six times from kindergarten to the second grade to measure their problem behaviors. Mothers and fathers filled in a questionnaire measuring their parenting styles once every year. The results showed that a high level of psychological control exercised by mothers combined with high affection predicted increases in the levels of both internal and external problem behaviors among children. Behavio…

Migration and the Mediterranean: The EU’s Response to the “European Refugee Crisis”

2020

This chapter describes and examines the origin, nature and development of the so-called “European refugee crisis” and particularly analyzes the internal and external measures taken by the EU and its Member States in response to it. Our inquiry focuses on the following measures: (1) hotspots and emergency support for affected Member States, (2) relocation, (3) resettlement and other legal ways of entry, (4) the CEAS reform, (5) addressing irregular migration through border controls and countering smuggling and trafficking, (6) return and readmission, (7) the EU–Turkey Statement, (8) additional cooperation with third countries as well as (8) (trust) funds to support regions of origin and tran…

Generation of Design Principles as Knowledge Conversion - Elucidating Dynamics

2021

In this paper we apply the perspective of knowledge conversion with recent identified core elements for developing design principles to elucidate the dynamics of design principles. In the paper, the elements of influence, actors, and formulation are integrated in a knowledge conversion process of socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization – through which tacit knowledge is made explicit, shared, and turned into action. We exemplify this process with three empirical cases using action design research (ADR) to develop IT artifacts and generate design principles. Our paper shows the dynamics across a process of generating design principles. Viewing the generation of desig…

Cómo se calma al primo en la ESO : la externalización a PCPI y la subjetivación de la selección escolar

2020

This paper deals with the process of externalization of pupils from compulsory lower secondary education to external programs (PCPI). It describes the negotiations, interactions and strategies deployed in the process, as well as the actors involved and the subjective effects it has on the students. The paper is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in a state secondary school in Madrid, and draws on document analysis, participant observation and interviews with students and the school personnel. The proposal of referral to basic vocational training programs external to compulsory education constitutes a status degradation for the students, which are defined as unable to complete compuls…

Parenting style and peer attachment as predictors of emotional instability in children

2017

We analyzed the roles of parenting style and peer attachment in predicting emotional instability in late childhood and early adolescence. Effects were analyzed separately by gender. Children's personal variables analyzed were empathy, anger, and the mechanisms used to cope with anger (externalization and self-control). Participants were 316 girls and 294 boys (N = 610) aged from 9 to 12 years who were students at schools in Valencia, Spain. Main gender differences for each variable were examined using one-way ANOVAs. Results of 2 multiple linear regression analyses (1 for boys and 1 for girls) explained 50.9% and 35.5%, respectively, of variance in the students' emotional instability. Consi…

SmartResource Platform and Semantic Agent Programming Language (S-APL)

2007

Although the flexibility of agent interactions has many advantages when it comes to engineering a complex system, the downside is that it leads to certain unpredictability of the run-time system. Literature sketches two major directions for search for a solution: social-level characterization of agent systems and ontological approaches to inter-agent coordination. Especially the latter direction is not yet studied much by the scientific community. This paper describes our vision and the present state of the SmartResource Platform. The main distinctive features of the platform are externalization of behavior prescriptions, i.e. agents access them from organizational repositories, and utiliza…

Narrative Transformations and Externalizing Talk in a Reflecting Team Consultation

2006

This article reports on a therapeutic consultation session following the reflecting team working format. A stanza form of transcription of the original video recording is used to present the narrative constructions of the consultation process, and the transformation of these constructions. This method of transcription and analysis seeks to convey to the reader the dynamics of tellings and reformulations of the client's problem story as they emerged in the conversational exchanges between consultant and client, and between the members of the reflecting team. The creation and use of an externalized fictive agent in the conversation is shown. This externalizing talk served to afford new agent…
