Long-term effects of repeated social stress on the conditioned place preference induced by MDMA in mice.

Previous studies have demonstrated that social defeat stress increases the rewarding effects of psychostimulant drugs such as cocaine and amphetamine. In the present study we evaluated the long-term effects of repeated social defeat (RSD) on the rewarding effects of ±3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) hydrochloride in the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. Effects of extended cocaine conditioning in the reinstatement of place preference.

Rats allowed extended access to cocaine self-administration develop a number of symptoms of addiction, such as greater susceptibility to drug-induced relapse. Using the conditioned place preference (CPP), the number of conditioning training sessions was increased in order to augment exposure to contextual cues associated with the effects of a drug. Mice were conditioned with a steady dose of 6 or 25 mg/kg of cocaine for 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 or 40 days. Weekly sessions of extinction followed the establishment of preference, after which a priming dose of cocaine was administered to reinstate the extinguished preference. Silicon-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides for nanosecond thermo-optical switching

A MHz-bandwidth thermo-optical (TO) plasmonic switch operating at telecommunication wavelengths and based on a hybrid solid-state silicon-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide design is demonstrated numerically. The nanosecond (ns) TO response of the switch is due to the high thermal conductivities of the employed materials and we demonstrate specifically a 10 dB extinction ratio in the time-dependent switch transmission which features a pulsed 1 ns rise time followed by a 25 ns fall time when the switch is photo-thermally activated by a ns pulse at 532 nm wavelength.

0.48Tb/s (12x40Gb/s) WDM transmission and high-quality thermo-optic switching in dielectric loaded plasmonics

We demonstrate Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM)-enabled transmission of 480Gb/s aggregate data traffic (12x40Gb/s) as well as high-quality 1x2 thermo-optic tuning in Dielectric-Loaded Surface Plasmon Polariton Waveguides (DLSPPWs). The WDM transmission characteristics have been verified through BER measurements by exploiting the heterointegration of a 60 mu m-long straight DLSPPW on a Silicon-on-Insulator waveguide platform, showing error-free performance for six out of the twelve channels. Wide Temperature Operation of 40-Gb/s 1550-nm Electroabsorption Modulated Lasers

Electroabsorption modulated lasers (EMLs) exploiting the quantum confined Stark effect need thermoelectric coolers to achieve stable output power levels and dynamic extinction ratios. Temperature-independent operation is reported between 20/spl deg/C and 70/spl deg/C for InGaAlAs-InP-based monolithically integrated 1550-nm EMLs exploiting a shared active area at 40 Gb/s by actively controlling the electroabsorption modulator bias voltage. Dynamic extinction ratios of at least 8 dB and fiber-coupled mean modulated optical power of at least 0.85 mW are obtained over the mentioned temperature range.

Low-Power consumption Franz-Keldysh effect plasmonic modulator

In this paper we report on a low energy consumption CMOS-compatible plasmonic modulator based on Franz-Keldysh effect in germanium on silicon. We performed integrated electro-optical simulations in order to optimize the main characteristics of the modulator. A 3.3 $dB$ extinction ratio for a 30 ${\mu}m$ long modulator is demonstrated under 3 $V$ bias voltage at an operation wavelength of 1647 $nm$. The estimated energy consumption is as low as 20 $fJ/bit$.

Asymmetric transmission of terahertz radiation through a double grating.

2013

We report on experimental evidence of unidirectional transmission of terahertz waves through a pair of metallic gratings with different periods. The gratings are optimized for a broadband transmission in one direction, accompanied with a high extinction rate in the opposite direction. In contrast to previous studies, we show that the zero-order nonreciprocity cannot be achieved. Nonetheless, we confirm that the structure can be used successfully as an asymmetric filter.

The last meal: large insects predominate the diet of the European Roller Coracias garrulus prior to population extinction

Capsule: The diet of a European Roller Coracias garrulus population, approximately 10 years before its extinction, comprised of large-bodied orthopterans and coleopterans. Aims: To explore the diet composition of declining population of the European Roller. Methods: In 2005, 2006 and 2009, we monitored 18 nesting sites of the European Roller in southern Poland. Pellets and prey remain found in nest-holes were analysed. Results: In total, 1646 prey items were found. Orthoptera (60.4% of prey items) and Coleoptera (38.5%) predominated while vertebrates were caught rarely. Effects of human disturbance on cave-nesting seabirds: The case of the storm petrel

We tested the effects of human disturbance in two sub-colonies of Mediterranean storm petrel. We conducted three experiments to measure the capacity of the storm petrels to respond to stress. The part of the colony exposed to human disturbance resulted to be habituated and did not show chronic stress related to anthropogenic disturbance.
