Immunohistochemical analysis of cellular adhesion molecules (ICAM-1, VCAM-1) and VEGF in fibrovascular membranes of patients with proliferative diabe…
2009
Abstract Purpose Diabetic fibrovascular membranes are the main pathological changes of proliferative diabetic retinopathy that can cause serious complications leading to blindness. Since the mechanism of fibrovascular membrane development is still unknown, the aim of our study was to identify potential biomarkers for this pathology. To this end, we analyzed the simultaneous expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and VEGF within tissues of diabetic fibrovascular membranes. Patients and methods Fibrovascular membranes were taken from nine diabetic patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The fibrovascular membrane specimens were analyzed by immunohistochemistry to determine ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and …
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection with cryopreserved testicular spermatozoa
2001
To assess if testicular sperm cryopreservation is a valid alternative to repetition of testicular sperm retrieval techniques, results of a cryopreservation technique in pills have been retrospectively analyzed. Enough motile spermatozoa for ICSI were obtained in 172 from 190 (90.5%) frozen-thawed testicular sperm samples. Overall, 249 couples underwent 390 ICSI cycles, 156 using fresh and 234 using cryopreserved testicular sperm. Mean two-pronuclear fertilization rates per cycle were not significantly different after ICSI with fresh (62.0%) or with cryopreserved (63.2%) spermatozoa. Mean embryo cleavage rate per cycle was higher in the fresh (90.6%) than in the cryopreserved (84.6%) group (…
Fertilization after intracytoplasmic sperm injection with cryopreserved testicular spermatozoa.
1996
Objective To assess the possibility of cryopreserving testicular tissue extracted sperm for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Design A report of two cases. Our study was approved by the Ethical Committee at the Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad. Setting In vitro fertilization program at the Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad. Patients Two azoospermic patients with severe spermatogenic failure but with focal spermatogenesis on testicular biopsies. In both cases, a first ICSI attempt with fresh testicular biopsy extracted sperm was unsuccessful. Interventions Cryopreservation of testicular spermatozoa in 100-µL "pills." Intracytoplasmic sperm injection with thawed testicular sperm…
Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE) and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) in Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism with Persistent Azoospermia After Hor…
2004
Purpose: We aimed to retrieve testicular sperm to be employed on intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles on a male affected of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) that remained azoospermic after long-time hormonal treatment. Methods: Design. We initially performed hormonal therapy using gonadotropins to achieve spermatogenesis. After several semen analyses, we weighed the possibility of looking for testicular spermatozoa for ICSI. Setting. A private university-affiliated setting. Patient. A 30-years-old man diagnosed 10 years ago to suffer from idiopathic, prepubertal HH. Interventions. Gonadotrophin treatment was initiated with hCG and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Testicular s…
Non surgical predicting factors for patient satisfaction after third molar surgery
2016
Background: In the third molar surgery, it is important to focus not only on surgical skills, but also on patient satisfaction. Classically studies have been focused on surgery and surgeon’s empathy, but there are non-surgical factors that may influence patient satisfaction. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 100 patients undergoing surgical extractions of impacted mandibular third molars treated from October 2013 to July 2014 in the Oral Surgery Unit of the University of Valencia. A questionnaire (20 questions) with a 10-point Likert scale was provided. The questionnaire assessed the ease to find the center, the ease to get oriented within the center, the burocr…
Comparison of 4% articaine with epinephrine (1:100,000) and without epinephrine in inferior alveolar block for tooth extraction: double-blind randomi…
2011
The purpose of this clinical prospective, randomized, double-blind study was to compare the anesthetic efficacy of 4% articaine with epinephrine (1:100,000) and without epinephrine in inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia for extractions of mandibular teeth.Eighty-eight patients received intraoral inferior alveolar nerve blocks using 4% articaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine (n = 41; group 1) or without epinephrine (n = 47; group 2) for extractions of mandibular teeth. The primary objectives were differences in onset as well as in length of soft tissue anesthesia. The amount of anesthetic solution, need of a second injection, pain while injecting, pain during treatment, postoperative pain,…
Management of dental extraction in patients with Haemophilia A and B: a report of 58 extractions
2013
Objectives: Patients with inherited bleeding disorders are at high risk of bleeding following oral surgery and present challenges to the oral surgeons. Aim of this study was to report our experience in dental extraction in patients exhibiting Haemophilia A and B between 2007 and 2012. Patient and Methods: 58 dental extractions in 15 patients during 19 interventions were performed. Replacement therapy with recombinant and plasma-derived factor VIII and IX was applied systematically in combination with antifibrinolytic treatment and local haemostatic measures. The following data were recorded: type of surgery, applied local haemostatic measures, general substitution, systemic antifibrinolytic…
Associations between self-reported physical activity and oral health: a cross-sectional analysis in 17,777 Spanish adults
2020
Background The aim of this study was to assess the association between levels of physical activity and oral health in adults residing in Spain. Methods Cross-sectional data from the Spanish National Health Survey 2017 were analysed (n = 17,777 adults aged ≥15 years; 52.0% females). The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form was used to measure physical activity. Oral health was self-reported through eight variables. Covariates included were sex, age, marital status, education, obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption. Results Dental caries (19.8% vs 27.8%), dental extraction (72.7% vs 75.4%), gingival bleeding (15.5% vs 19.1%), tooth movement (4.3% vs 5.9%) and miss…
Treatment of injuries to the inferior alveolar nerve after endodontic procedures.
1998
Overextension of filling material into the mandibular canal after root treatment in the lower jaw is a rare but serious complication. Mechanical compression, chemical neurotoxicity and local infection may cause irreversible nerve damage. A report on 11 patients with neurological complaints of the inferior alveolar nerve after endodontic treatment is summarised. The neurological findings are dominated by hypaesthesia and dysaesthesia. Half of the patients reported pain. Hyperaesthesia is found much more rarely. Nearly all the patients had a combination of one or more symptoms. Initial X-rays showed root filling material in the area of the mandibular canal. Nine cases were treated with apicec…
Survival and tissue maintenance of an implant with a sloped configurated shoulder in the posterior mandible-a prospective multicenter study.
2016
Aim Clinical studies evaluating the influence of the implant design on the preservation of peri-implant keratinized mucosa are rare. The aim of this prospective multicenter study was to investigate the survival, and soft and hard tissue maintenance of an implant with a sloped shoulder configuration, when placed in the posterior mandible. Material and Methods In this study, 24 centers participated and 184 patients receiving 238 implants (OsseoSpeed™ Profile TX implants) were included. Clinical assessments of soft tissue parameters were performed before implant placement, immediately after implant placement, at prosthetic delivery and at 6, 12 and 24 months after implant placement and margina…
