The metabolic versatility of PAOs as an opportunity to obtain a highly P-enriched stream for further P-recovery

2015

The effects of two sequencing batch reactor operation strategies for phosphorus stream enrichment over the biological phosphorus removal performance have been studied. The objective of both strategies is of performing an extraction cycle in order to obtain a new stream highly enriched with phosphorus. In the 1st strategy the amount of influent volatile fatty acids (VFAs) is the same in each cycle; while in the 2nd strategy the influent VFAs concentration is increased during phosphorus extraction experiments. Despite the strong decrease of the stored poly-P inside the cells in both strategies after the recovery cycles, the ability of the systems to remove phosphorus was not affected. The P-r…

The diabetic cataract: an unusual presentation in a young subject: case report.

1997

This case report concerns a 14-year-old female patient, whose insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus was displayed by one infrequent complication, the cataract. This is an unusual manifestation in a 14-year-old patient; indeed, there are many findings in experimental animals demonstrating the development of this complication by maintaining blood glucose levels above 12 mM. After surgical therapy, complete vision was recovered, but we think that an earlier diagnosis and therapy of metabolic derangement of diabetes may have avoided this complication.

2019

In recent years, Google has devoted resources to build a complete map of the world. They constantly scan the territory, collecting a large amount of data that provides updated and complete geographic information. This allows us to have an interoperable map that provides the end user with a search tool, not only of routes but also of shops, equipment and any type of geo-referenced information. In addition, Google Maps provides a series of Application Programming Interface (API), which provides a library of set of subroutines, functions and procedures (in object-oriented programming) that can be used by other software to automate the extraction of information of the Google platform. What grafting materials produce greater alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction? A systematic review and network meta-analysis

2021

Abstract A systematic review and network meta-analysis was conducted to compare different bone-substitute materials used for alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction. The electronic search was carried out on Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, LILACS, and grey literature up to March 22, 2020 (registration number INPLASY202030005). Only randomized controlled trials were included to answer the following PICOS question: ‘What grafting materials produce greater alveolar ridge preservation after tooth extraction?’ The primary outcomes were the alveolar width resorption 1 mm below the alveolar crest and buccal height resorption in millimeters. Of the 4379 studies i…

Semisupervised nonlinear feature extraction for image classification

2012

Feature extraction is of paramount importance for an accurate classification of remote sensing images. Techniques based on data transformations are widely used in this context. However, linear feature extraction algorithms, such as the principal component analysis and partial least squares, can address this problem in a suboptimal way because the data relations are often nonlinear. Kernel methods may alleviate this problem only when the structure of the data manifold is properly captured. However, this is difficult to achieve when small-size training sets are available. In these cases, exploiting the information contained in unlabeled samples together with the available training data can si…

Texture analysis for infarcted myocardium detection on delayed enhancement MRI

2017

Detection of infarcted myocardium in the left ventricle is achieved with delayed enhancement magnetic resonance imaging (DE-MRI). However, manual segmentation is tedious and prone to variability. We studied three texture analysis methods (run-length matrix, co-occurrence matrix, and autoregressive model) in combination with histogram features to characterize the infarcted myocardium. We evaluated 10 patients with chronic infarction to select the most discriminative features and to train a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The classifier model was then used to segment five human hearts from the STACOM DE-MRI challenge at MICCAI 2012. The Dice coefficient was used to compare the segmen…

NEW GUIDED BONE REGENERATION PROCEDURE USING LEUKOCYTE AND PLATELET RICH FIBRIN (L PRF) IN ORAL SURGERY

2021

Non-transfusional hemocomponents are autogenous products used in several surgical fields obtained by the centrifugation of a blood sample from a patient and able to promote hard and soft tissue regeneration, local haemostasis, and the acceleration of wound healing. The aim of this PhD thesis was the validation of an innovative protocol for the Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) technique using second-generation autologous platelet concentrates, Leukocytes and Platelet-rich Fibrin (L-PRF), in post-extraction sockets of patients in need of dental avulsions and successive implant prosthetic rehabilitation, evaluating its ability to prevent alveolar bone resorption and promote bone regeneration. Th…

Intracytoplasmic Testicular Sperm Injection: An Effective Treatment for Otherwise Intractable Obstructive Azoospermia

1995

AbstractPurpose: We evaluated the efficacy of intracytoplasmic sperm injection with testicular spermatozoa.Materials and Methods: Intracytoplasmic sperm injection was performed with spermatozoa obtained from testicular biopsy specimens in 15 patients with obstructive azoospermia, in whom standard microsurgical procedures were not feasible or had previously failed. Results: Fertilization was achieved in 14 to 15 cycles. Mean fertilization rate per cycle was 63.6 percent. Four clinical pregnancies occurred, for a pregnancy rate of 26.7 percent per started cycle and 28.6 percent per transfer. Conclusions: Intracytoplasmic testicular sperm injection is followed by high fertilization rates, and of…

H$^{-}$ extraction systems for CERN’s Linac4 H$^{-}$ ion source

2018

Linac4 is a 160 MeV linear H accelerator at CERN. It is an essential part of the beam luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and will be the primary injector into the chain of circular accelerators. It aims at increasing the beam brightness by a factor of 2, when compared to the currently used 50 MeV linear proton accelerator, Linac2. Linac4’s ion source is a cesiated RF-plasma H ion source. Several beam extraction systems were designed for H beams of 45 keV energy, 50 mA intensity and an electron to H ratio smaller than 5. The goal was to extract a beam with an rms-emittance of mm mrad. One of the main challenges in designing an H extraction system is dumping of the co-extra…
