The article provides an overview of the Pleyel company during a fifty-year period, starting at the time of the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris and the death of the well-known piano maker Camille Pleyel. During this period, the famous French firm was directed by Auguste Wolff (from 1855 to 1887) and Gustave Lyon (from 1887 to the beginning of twentieth century). The entrepreneurial talents, scientific abilities and musical skills of Pleyel’s two successors made this company the biggest and most innovative French piano producer of the second half of the nineteenth century. A comparison of the marginal adaptation of composite overlays fabricated with silicone and an intraoral scanner

Background Intraoral scanners have been developing during last years. The aim of this study was to know if digital impressions achieve a marginal adaptation in overlays as well as conventional impressions with silicone. Material and methods Sixty-two extracted molars were selected. The samples were prepared for MOD overlays. The teeth were divided into two groups (n=31). Selective and sensitive colorimetric detection of the neurotransmitter serotonin based on the aggregation of bifunctionalised gold nanoparticles

[EN] We report a simple, sensitive and selective method for the colorimetric detection of serotonin (5-HT) in aqueous media using bifunctionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The probe (1) consisted of AuNPs functionalised with dithiobis(succinimidylpropionate) (DSP) and N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NALC). DSP was chosen to react with the amino group of 5-HT, whereas NALC was chosen to bind the hydroxyl group in 5-HT through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. A double interaction between nanoparticles and the hydroxyl and the amino group of serotonin led to interparticle-crosslinking aggregation. This, resulted in a colour change from red to blue that can be observed by the naked eye.…

Colorimetric detection of normetanephrine, a pheochromocytoma biomarker, using bifunctionalised gold nanoparticles.

[EN] A simple and effective colorimetric method for the detection of normetanephrine (NMN), an O-methylated metabolite of norepinephrine, using functionalised gold nanoparticles is described. This metabolite is an important biomarker in the diagnosis of adrenal tumours such as pheocromocytoma or paraganglioma. The colorimetric probe consists of spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalised with two different ligands, which specifically recognize different functional groups in normetanephrine. Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a mitochondrially inherited form of visual dysfunction caused by mutations in several genes encoding subunits of the mitochondrial respiratory NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase complex (complex I). Development of gene therapies for LHON has been impeded by genetic heterogeneity and the need to deliver therapies to the mitochondria of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), the cells primarily affected in LHON. The therapy under development entails intraocular injection of a nuclear yeast gene NADH-quinone oxidoreductase (NDI1) that encodes a single subunit complex I equivalent and as such is mutation independent. An siRNA-based functional genomics screen for the identification of regulators of ciliogenesis and ciliopathy genes

Item does not contain fulltext Defects in primary cilium biogenesis underlie the ciliopathies, a growing group of genetic disorders. We describe a whole-genome siRNA-based reverse genetics screen for defects in biogenesis and/or maintenance of the primary cilium, obtaining a global resource. We identify 112 candidate ciliogenesis and ciliopathy genes, including 44 components of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, 12 G-protein-coupled receptors, and 3 pre-mRNA processing factors (PRPF6, PRPF8 and PRPF31) mutated in autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa. Isolated superior oblique palsies with electrophysiologically documented brainstem lesions

Over a 13.5-year period, we observed 10 patients with isolated superior oblique palsies in whom electrophysiological abnormalities indicated brainstem lesions. In 7 patients unilateral masseter reflex abnormalities were seen, and were located on the side of the superior oblique palsy in 2 patients and on the opposite side in 5 patients. Two patients had slowed gain of following eye movements to the side contralateral to the superior oblique palsy. Slowed adduction saccades in the eye contralateral to the superior oblique palsy were seen in 1 patient. AbstractThe goldfish is one of the few animals exceptionally well analyzed in behavioral experiments and also in electrophysiological and neuroanatomical investigations of the retina. To get insight into the functional organization of the retina we studied color vision, motion detection and temporal resolution before and after intra-ocular injection of neuropharmaca with known effects on retinal neurons.
