Patterns of cytokeratin and vimentin expression in the human eye
1988
We studied the expression of the various cytokeratin (CK) polypeptides and vimentin in tissues of the human eye by applying immunocytochemical procedures using a panel of monoclonal antibodies as well as by performing biochemical analyses of microdissected tissues. Adult corneal epithelium was found to contain significant amounts of the cornea-specific CKs nos. 3 and 12 as well as CK no. 5, and several additional minor CK components. Among these last CKs, no. 19 was found to exhibit an irregular mosaic-like staining pattern in the peripheral zone of the corneal epithelium, while having a predominantly basal distribution in the limbal epithelium. Both the fetal corneal epithelium and the con…
Ziliarkörpermetastase als Ersthinweis auf ein kleinzelliges Bronchialkarzinom1
2000
BACKGROUND About 3-10% of patients suffering from metastatic disease develop metastatic choroidal tumors. In this case report ocular symptoms were the first sign of a systemic malignancy. CASE REPORT A 65-year old man complained of an increasing painful redness of his left eye. He showed a white mass with 10 mm in thickness in the temporal chamber angle with "pseudohypopyon" and secondary glaucoma. Because of increasing pain the eye was removed. Histologic examination showed a small cell carcinoma of the ciliary body with high malignancy, which most probably has to be seen as a metastasis of a carcinoma of the lung, which was detected by internal examination concurrently. In addition, a met…
The Neuroepithelium Disruption Could Generate Autoantibodies against AQP4 and Cause Neuromyelitis Optica and Hydrocephalus
2014
Neuromyelitis optica is an inflammatory disease characterized by neuritis and myelitis of the optic nerve. Its physiopathology is connected with the aquaporin-4 water channel, since antibodies against aquaporin-4 have been found in the cerebrospinal fluid and blood of neuromyelitis optica patients. The seropositivity for aquaporin-4 antibodies is used for the diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica or neuromyelitis optica spectrum disease. On the other hand, aquaporin-4 is expressed in astrocyte feet in the brain-blood barrier and subventricular zones of the brain ventricles. Aquaporin-4 expression is high in cerebrospinal fluid in hydrocephalus. Furthermore, neuroepithelial denudation precedes n…
An ultrastructural study on retinal neural and pigment epithelial cells in ovine neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis.
1990
Ovine neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis represents another well studied model for human neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCL). Accumulation of abnormal lipopigments in various retinal neurons, and loss of photoreceptors are similar to the lesions in human juvenile NCL and indicate that the sheep is a suitable model in which to study the pathogenesis of both NCL lipopigment formation and retinopathia pigmentosa. However, this latter process is not as advanced in NCL-diseased sheep as in human patients but far more obvious than in canine NCL in which retinopathy cannot be unequivocally documented. Ovine NCL shares with canine NCL peculiar lamellar inclusions in retinal pigment epithelial cells wh…
KLEIP Deficiency in Mice Causes Progressive Corneal Neovascular Dystrophy
2012
PURPOSE. The BTB-kelch protein KLEIP/KLHL20 is an actin binding protein that regulates cell-cell contact formation and cell migration. The aim of our study was to characterize KLEIP’s function in ocular health and disease in mice. METHODS. KLEIP -/- mice were generated, and corneas were examined histologically and stained for keratin-1, loricrin, keratin-12, keratin-14, CD31, LYVE-1, F4/80, E-cadherin, and Ki67. Corneal abrasions were performed after eyelid opening. RESULTS. Corneas of KLEIP þ/þ and KLEIP -/- mice were indistinguishable at birth. After eyelid opening corneal epithelial hyperplasia started to manifest in KLEIP -/- mice, showing a progressive epithelial metaplasia leading to …
The “mode” of lymphocyte extravasation through HEV of Peyer's patches and its role in normal homing and inflammation
2007
The mode of lymphocyte transendothelial migration in the postcapillary high endothelial venules (HEVs) of Peyer's patches during normal homing and acute inflammation in the guinea pig was studied. It is common opinion that the lymphocyte transendothelial passage from the blood stream into the extravasal lymphoid tissue calls for a multistep process of endothelial and lymphocyte molecules favoring tethering, rolling, activation, arrest and its firm adhesion to the endothelial luminal surface. Ultrastructural serial pictures and the three-dimensional reconstruction of HEVs with lymphocytes during different moments of their transmigration through the endothelial wall enabled us to demonstrate …

The eye in thyroid autoimmunity – Autoimmunité et œil lors de la maladie de Basedow
2014
Thyroid eye disease or thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) is the commonest cause of orbital disease with an inflammatory component. With a basic knowledge of both orbital anatomy and the pathogenesis of TAO, it is easy to understand how its typical constellation of features originates. These features can be considered as primary or secondary. Primary features are those due directly to the disease process affecting a tissue e.g. restrictive myopathy. Secondary features occur due to the interaction of the affected tissue and the anatomical configuration of the tissues e.g. corneal ulceration or optic neuropathy, and are less likely to be florid at presentation. TAO is characterized by an im…
Norrie gene product is necessary for regression of hyaloid vessels.
2004
To investigate the nature and origin of the vitreous membranes in mice with knock-out of the Norrie gene product (ND mice).Eighty-two eyes of ND mice of different age groups (postnatal day [P]0-13 months) and 95 age-matched wild-type control mice were investigated. In vitreoretinal wholemounts and in sagittal sections, vessels and free cells were visualized by labeling for lectin. In addition, staining with a marker for macrophages (F4/80) and collagen XVIII/endostatin known to be involved in regression of hyaloid vessels was performed for light and electron microscopic investigations. Endostatin expression was confirmed by Western blot analysis.Wild-type controls showed the typical pattern…
