Eye movements when reading words with $YMβOL$ and NUM83R5: There is a cost

2009

Recent evidence from masked priming experiments has revealed that readers regularize letter-like symbols and letter-like numbers into their corresponding base letters with minimal processing cost. However, one open question is whether the same pattern occurs when these items are presented during normal silent reading. In the present study, we respond to this question in an eye-movement experiment that included sentences with words that had symbols and numbers as letters, as in “YESTERDAY I SAW THE SECRE74RY WORKING VERY HARD”. Results revealed that there is a greater reading cost associated with letter-by-number replacements than with letter-by-symbol replacements, especially when the repla…

What Conclusions does Rapid Image Classification by Eye Movements Provide for Machine Vision?

2008

Human ability to rapidly classify images of natural objects has been a matter of study for more than a decade. Recently eye movements have been exploited as a behavioural response, which has lead to alternative hypotheses of natural image processing. In this research, twelve volunteers made a movement towards a briefly displayed digital image if it was an animal, and a movement away otherwise. In both cases, the average response time was more than 400 milliseconds.

Rituximab in refractory Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease.

2011

Introduction Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada (VKH) prognosis depends on early recognition and treatment; chronic disease may be developed when either delayed or inadequate treatment is performed, whereas other cases despite correct treatment are refractory to different drugs and also become chronic. We report a case of refractory VKH controlled with rituximab treatment. Case report A 41-year-old female with painful visual loss and headache was examined. (VA 0.4 in RE and hand movements (HM) in LE). Retinal examination demonstrated multiple serous retinal detachments in both eyes. High-dose oral steroids were started, followed by progressive tapering of prednisone. New acute anterior and posterior rela…

Successful Topical Application of Caspofungin in the Treatment of Fungal Keratitis Refractory to Voriconazole

2010

Fungal keratitis is an important ophthalmic problem because it leads to corneal blindness and sometimes to loss of the eye.1,2 There is no agreed protocol for the treatment of suspected fungal keratitis. Topical and oral voriconazole have now been reported to be effective.3 However, some cases do not respond to this treatment. New antifungal agents such as caspofungin acetate, 0.5%, are promising alternatives

Pimeydestä päivänvaloon : 2000-luvun alun vampyyri - kasvissyöjä, rakastaja ja tappaja

2011

Comparison of higher order aberrations measured by NIDEK OPD-Scan dynamic skiascopy and Zeiss WASCA Hartmann-Shack aberrometers.

2008

<h4>PURPOSE</h4><p>To compare the measurement of wavefront aberrations in non-cyclopleged human eyes with Hartmann-Shack and dynamic skiascopy wavefront analyzers.</p> <h4>METHODS</h4><p>Eighty eyes of 40 healthy young adults (19 men, 21 women; mean age 20.8±2.5 years) with refractive errors ranging from +1.50 to –9.75 diopters (D) sphere and up to 1.75 D cylinder (mean spherical equivalent refraction –2.12±2.69 D) were examined with the Zeiss/Meditec WASCA and NIDEK OPD-Scan wavefront analyzers and with the Nippon SRW5000 binocular, open-field autorefractor without the instillation of antimuscarinic agents. Three measurements were taken with each s…

In vitro optical performance of a new aberration-free intraocular lens

2014

To assess the optical performance of the new EnVista intraocular lens (IOL). Four aspheric IOLs were evaluated; the new EnVista is one amoung them. This IOL, similarly to the Z-Flex HB and the Bi-Flex 1.8 667AB ones, has a neutral aspheric design, whereas the fourth IOL under test (AcrySof IQ IOL SN60WF) presents a negative spherical aberration (SA). The IOL’s aberration patterns were measured in vitro, by setting them up on an optical bench. From these aberration-pattern data, the modulation transfer function (MTF), the average modulation values, and the points spread function (PSF) were calculated. Furthermore, in order to assess the potential optical quality that these IOLs would yield o…

<title>Photoinduced AsSeS thin film phase plates as adaptive optics mirrors for eye aberration correction</title>

2008

Amorphous chalcogenide thin films are excellent materials for holographic recordings. AsSeS thin film coating is a useful optical material for it's thickness to be easily corrected with the use of exposure to light and consecutive chemical etching. Following properties allow to treat the surface of AsSeS chalcogenide films and to use them in adaptive optics systems for correction of the optical wavefront. Hereby, we characterize AsSeS film properties to be used for correction of optical aberrations of the human eye. The thickness of the film is characterized with the method of spectrodensitometry and the surface profile depth with a Hartman- Shack waveform analyzator.

A pilot study on the differences in wavefront aberrations between two ethnic groups of young generally myopic subjects

2008

A comparative population-based cross-sectional study design was used to examine the prevalence of wavefront patterns in two different ethnic groups, and the relationship of these patterns with ocular biometrics and gender. The Shin–Nippon SRW5000 open field autorefractor, the Wavefront Analysis Supported Customized Ablation (WASCA) wavefront analyser and the IOLMaster were used to determine wavefront aberrations, mean spherical equivalent (SE) refractive error and axial length (AL). Seventy-four eyes from 74 young healthy subjects (44 British Asians, 30 Caucasians; 36 men, 38 women; mean age 22.51 ± 3.89 years) with mean SE averaging )1.90 ± 2.76 D (range )10.88 to +2.19 D) were examined. R…

Neural Adaptation to Optical Quality Defects

2010

From an optical perspective the eye is far from perfect. This is a fact that is extensively supported by literature; for instance, Prof. Navarro recently provided us with a fantastic critical review on the various theories behind the different eye models and their flaws.1 The human eye has considerable amounts of higher-order aberrations even when it is emmetropic,2 with great inter-individual variability. Besides, higher-order aberrations are still postulated to have a role in the development of the refractive error, although it is not clear the extent to which this may be (see Charman WN for a review).3 The known optical limitations of the normal human eye raised the question as to what t…
