Self-Ordering Secondary Structure of d- and l-Arginine-Derived Polyamidoamino Acids
2017
This paper reports on synthesis, acid–base properties and pH-dependent structuring in water of d-, l- and d,l-ARGO7, bioinspired polymers obtained by polyaddition of the corresponding arginine stereoisomers with N,N′-methylenebis(acrylamide). The circular dichroism spectra of d- and l-ARGO7 showed a peak at 228 nm and quickly and reversibly responded to pH changes, but were nearly unaffected by temperature, ionic strength, and denaturating agents. Theoretical modeling studies of L-ARGO7 showed that it assumed a folded structure. Intramolecular interactions led to transoid arrangements of the main chain reminiscent of the protein hairpin motif. Torsion angles showed a quite similar distribut…
Self-stabilizing Balls & Bins in Batches
2016
A fundamental problem in distributed computing is the distribution of requests to a set of uniform servers without a centralized controller. Classically, such problems are modelled as static balls into bins processes, where m balls (tasks) are to be distributed to n bins (servers). In a seminal work, [Azar et al.; JoC'99] proposed the sequential strategy Greedy[d] for n = m. When thrown, a ball queries the load of d random bins and is allocated to a least loaded of these. [Azar et al.; JoC'99] showed that d=2 yields an exponential improvement compared to d=1. [Berenbrink et al.; JoC'06] extended this to m ⇒ n, showing that the maximal load difference is independent of m for d=2 (in contrast…
Linear response theory and neutrino mean free path using Brussels-Montreal Skyrme functionals
2014
The Brussels-Montreal Skyrme functionals have been successful in describing properties of both finite nuclei and infinite homogeneous nuclear matter. In their latest version, these functionals have been equipped with two extra density-dependent terms in order to reproduce simultaneously ground state properties of nuclei and infinite nuclear matter properties while avoiding at the same time the arising of ferromagnetic instabilities. In the present article, we extend our previous results of the linear response theory to include such extra terms at both zero and finite temperature in pure neutron matter. The resulting formalism is then applied to derive the neutrino mean free path. The predic…
Patients' narratives of patient education in physiotherapy after total hip arthroplasty.
2019
Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to explore patients' narratives of patient education in physiotherapy after a total hip arthroplasty (THA). Method The data was collected via open thematic interviews from ten patients who had had a primary THA. The interviews were analysed using a qualitative, narrative method. Results Three story models of patient education in physiotherapy were identified: Supportive patient education in physiotherapy, Co-operative patient education in physiotherapy and Contradictory patient education in physiotherapy. The emphasis of narration in the first story model was on the trust in the guidance, functioning interaction in the second and insufficient pat…
A self-sterilizing fluorescent Nanocomposite as versatile material with broad-spectrum Antibiofilm features
2020
Abstract Hematogenous spread of infections from colonized central intravenous catheters or central lines is a long-recognized problem with infection rates of 2 and 6.8 per 1000 days, respectively. Besides, removal of severe microbial colonization of implanted biomaterials is still a challenge and usually requires invasive operations. Hence, on demand self-sterilizing materials are required to avoid explant of colonized biomaterials and improve patient compliance. Moreover, photoluminescence is needed to make trackable biomaterials, which can be easily monitored upon implanting them in the body. Here, we propose the incorporation of near infrared (NIR) sensitive red-emitting carbon nanodot (…
MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH IN A SURGICAL PRECISION NECK STABBING
2021
Trauma involving the neck region are to always be considered as clinical/surgical emergencies because of the presence of vascular, nervous and lymphatic vessels, along with the pharyngo-esophageal and laryngo-tracheal structures. For this reason, therapeutic and diagnostic timing arouses great interest. The authors report the case of a conscious and hemodynamically stable man, presented to the emergency room for a neck penetrating trauma, caused by a knife passing through his neck (zone II) from right to left. A correct instrumental examination (CT angiography and selective right carotid axis angiography) and the multidisciplinary surgical approach proved to be fundamental for the safe extr…
Osoby cierpiące na zaburzenia psychiczne
2022
Systematic research about mental illnesses has been conducted for many years in Poland and all around the world. Many studies of this topic have been conducted since then. The following work presents an overview of results of studies about mental illnesses – definitione of the concept, Classification of disorders as well as problems of stigmatization and self-stigma in the modern world. The analysis of reports to date shows that every fourth Pole in working age has experienced a mental disorder at least once in his life, and the most numerous group of Poles are addicts, which is about 3.3 million Poles. People suffering from neuroses are in second place and people suffering from mood disord…
COMUNICACIÓN FAMILIAR Y COMPORTAMIENTOS DELICTIVOS EN ADOLESCENTES ESPAÑOLES:: EL DOBLE ROL MEDIADOR DE LA AUTOESTIMA¹
2007
This research analyses the relationship among family communication (open communication versus communication problems), multidimensional self-esteem (family, academic, social and physical self-esteem) and behavioural problems in adolescence. Two independent samples were used in the study: Sample 1 was composed of 414 adolescents ranging in age from 12 to 17 years old, and Sample 2 was composed of 625 adolescents aged from 11 to 20 years old. Results showed an indirect effect of family communication on delinquent behavior through the mediation of self-esteem. We found a protection effect of family and academic self-esteem and a risk effect of social and physical self-esteem on delinquent beha…
Col : A Data Collection Protocol for Vanet
2012
International audience; In this paper, we present a protocol to collect data within a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET). In spite of the intrinsic dynamic of such network, our protocol simultaneously offers three relevant properties: (1) It allows any vehicle to collect data beyond its direct neighborhood (i.e., vehicles within direct communication range) using vehicle-to-vehicle communications only (i.e., the infrastructure is not required); (2) It tolerates possible network partitions; (3) It works on demand and stops when the data collection is achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first collect protocol having these three characteristics. All that is chiefly obtained thanks…
