Modular fluxes, elliptic genera, and weak gravity conjectures in four dimensions

2019

We analyse the Weak Gravity Conjecture for chiral four-dimensional F-theory compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry. Extending our previous work on nearly tensionless heterotic strings in six dimensions, we show that under certain assumptions a tower of asymptotically massless states arises in the limit of vanishing coupling of a U(1) gauge symmetry coupled to gravity. This tower contains super-extremal states whose charge-to-mass ratios are larger than those of certain extremal dilatonic Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, precisely as required by the Weak Gravity Conjecture. Unlike in six dimensions, the tower of super-extremal states does not always populate a charge sub-lattice. The main t…

Reflexions on Mahler: Dessins, Modularity and Gauge Theories

2021

We provide a unified framework of Mahler measure, dessins d'enfants, and gauge theory. With certain physically motivated Newton polynomials from reflexive polygons, the Mahler measure and the dessin are in one-to-one correspondence. From the Mahler measure, one can construct a Hauptmodul for a congruence subgroup of the modular group, which contains the subgroup associated to the dessin. In brane tilings and quiver gauge theories, the modular Mahler flow gives a natural resolution of the inequivalence amongst the three different complex structures $\tau_{R,G,B}$. We also study how, in F-theory, 7-branes and their monodromies arise in the context of dessins. Moreover, we give a dictionary on…

331 models and grand unification: From minimal SU(5) to minimal SU(6)

2016

We consider the possibility of grand unification of the $\mathrm{ SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X}$ model in an SU(6) gauge unification group. Two possibilities arise. Unlike other conventional grand unified theories, in SU(6) one can embed the $\mathrm{ SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X}$ model as a subgroup such that different multiplets appear with different multiplicities. Such a scenario may emerge from the flux breaking of the unified group in an E(6) F-theory GUT. This provides new ways of achieving gauge coupling unification in $\mathrm{ SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X}$ models while providing the radiative origin of neutrino masses. Alternatively, a sequential va…

A multimodal analysis of british television commercials and their Influence in the audience

2018

Abstract A MULTIMODAL ANALYSIS OF BRITISH TELEVISION COMMERCIALS AND THEIR INFLUENCE IN THE AUDIENCE Advertising has been among us since ancient times; but since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution —middle of the XIX century— advertising grew at the same rate as the industrial activity did. Today, most people are constantly exposed to its messages and it is an activity for which companies spend large amounts of money. This shows that it has an impact on sales, making it a key activity in the capitalist machinery. One may wonder what makes advertising so effective. Hitherto, there have been a multitude of studies about what makes advertising such a skilful tool in convincing people. I…

New fourfolds from F-theory

2015

In this paper, we apply Borcea-Voisin's construction and give new examples of fourfolds containing a del Pezzo surface of degree six, which admit an elliptic fibration on a smooth threefold. Some of these fourfolds are Calabi-Yau varieties, which are relevant for the $N=1$ compactification of Type IIB string theory known as $F$-Theory. As a by-product, we provide a new example of a Calabi--Yau threefold with Hodge numbers $h^{1,1}=h^{2,1}=10$.
